Photographing the Winter Night at the Grand Canyon

A selfie from a cold and dark night at the Grand Canyon. I am set up at the edge looking at the arc of the Milky Way and the depths of the Canyon. Yes, its a cold night and I was bunded up in a down jacket. Standing there alone with the stars was an amazing experience.

Getting the Shot

One from last Sunday a week ago. It was my last opportunity in 2019 to get this shot before the trees greened up and leafed out. I like to visit this area in February and March every year as I know the Milky Way will rise just before dawn. This has been a tough year. Every weekend that has little or no moon was rainy or overcast. I kept trying but mother nature had other ideas. Finally it looked like the Thursday, March 14th would be a good clear night. Except that on Tuesday we got a lot of local rain the river levels jump from being 2-3 ft deep (.7 to 1m) to being 6 foot deep (2m) and there was no way I could get to this spot. See I have to wade down the river in the dark to be here.

Finally on St. Patricks Day, I got some luck, the river levels were down to be safe to wade the river and the sky was clear.

I arrived alone at the river about 0400, donned my hip waders, grabbed my backpack and waded into the river in the dark. It was a cold nght and light wisps of fog were rising off the water. Occasionally they would blind me for a second or two as the fog hit my face. The water levels and flow were managable and I was able to get down and across to this spot. Then I set up two tripods/cameras and began making images. Here is a shot of one of my setups.

This is my smaller Feisol 3401 tripod and my Sony A7R3 with the tiny Samyang 8mm f/2.8 fisheye. It is a native Sony E mount lens that does not fill the frame as it is a crop sensor lens. However since the A7R3 has 42mp, I can still get a nice 18mp image with it. The image here was taken by my other camera I had set up, my Sony A7S with Samyang 12mm fisheye lens.

Anyway, it was a good morning on the river and as the stars faded, I packed back up, waded back upstream and drove home at sunrise.

The big open country of Torridon. I need to plan a wild camp here on my next trip to the Highlands. Amazing country.
