Star Trails on the Lost Mesa- may notice the Milky Way in there too. I was out
on this lonely desert grassland to photograph an eclipse. I also set up a few night shots.

Kirkjufell and Northern Lights
The iconic mountain Kirkjufell and its famous waterfall Kirkjufellfoss with the aurora. One of the highlights of my Iceland trip was seeing the northern lights above Kirkjufell. I stayed three nights in the area and saw the aurora on two of those nights. The display I witnessed was amazing and I photographed them for over three hours. Here I set up by the waterfall and caught the amazing green glow over the falls and mountains.
When planning my trip to Iceland it was all built around certain photography destinations-this being one of them. I timed the trip for early September to be after the worst of the tourist crunch and also to have a little bit of darkness to see the aurora. We had roughly a 3.5 hour window of darkness every night 11:30pm until 3 am when we could see it. I camped nearby and by staying three nights hoped I would be able to have a clear night to see the lights. I was lucky enough to have two nights here to see the aurora.
I said "Wow!" a lot here. :-)
Also, to help you understand words in Icelandic: Kirk is church; Fell is mountain; foss is waterfall. So this is Church Mountain and Church Mountain Falls when translated.

Nolan River Bluff and Milky Way

Virgin River and Towers in Zion
Looking up at the cliffs and towers of Zion Canyon with the Virgin River flowing past. The sights one can find in Zion NP are amazing. The huge sandstone walls, the narrow canyons, the slick rock, and the light all combine for a photographers dream destination.

Zion by Night
A dark autumn night in Zion Canyon I wandered with my camera looking for images of the stars above and the arc of the Milky Way. Here I found a tree with bare branches and set up this shot. I used a brief bit of red LED light from my headlamp to add a touch of color to the tree.

Travel Light
As a photographer I like to always have a camera with me as you ever know when you will get a good shot. As a landscape photographer I am also out at twilight or times of low light. So I want a lightweight kit that can get the shot. For me it's my Sony NEX 6 kit and little Sirui 025X tripod.
The NEX 6 is six years and four models old. Yet it is so small and capable, I still use it a lot. Even this year it was the only camera I took for a week in Arizona in January and a week in Florida in May. I take it with me when I walk my dogs or ride my bike.
Add in the little Sirui and I can get a nice long exposure. This tripod is about a foot long and extends to 36" tall which is decently tall to get most shots.
Here it is in action last weekend. I was out on a bike ride and stopped to grab this shot. By using the tripod I was able to get a much better shot than just holding the camera. It's also easy to pack on the bike or back.

Get Outside-Have an Adventure
It is the Thanksgiving holiday here in the States and that means it's almost Black Friday. Instead of shopping I will be out with my camera, chasing images, looking for fall color in the trees, and having an adventure. I prefer experiences to things and will make the most of the day by being outside with my camera. I even have a few photographer friends tagging along. We are at our peak autumn color here in Texas and I look forward to what we can find. Forecast is calling for a chance of rain Friday which should make for great conditions.
Here is a shot from a few weeks ago. Our record month of rain in October had raised lake and river levels and I found this section of the Trinity River roaring. The normally small waterfall here had grown and spread along the Rocky ledges maikng a rare horseshoe. It's getting out and finding these fleeting scenes why I get out with my camera whenever I can. You don't find this in a mall or online, you find it in person.
