One of the most photographed sites in Saqqara is the Mastaba Tomb of Mereruka, due to the distinctive two metre statue of Meruruka, an important official to the Pharaoh Teti from the 6th dynasty (who ruled around 2340 BCE).

One thing I discovered with visiting all the ancient sites in Egypt is to arrive early. On this day, I was the first to visit this area, and when the heavy metal door was opened with some noise, I slowly strode into rooms that have stood for more than 4000 years.

With no-one else around, I was able to quietly enjoy the silence and solitude, and marvel at the high standard of work completed by artisans who lived so very long ago.

This gorgeous Black Headed Heron arrived in our garden earlier this week. It was obviously searching for food as it quietly and carefully moved across the grass.

Gather around the south side of the Giza Pyramids every evening and you will be treated to a Sound and Light Show.

With the use of coloured lights, video projection and green lasers, the 50 minute show provides an insight into Ancient Egypt, with the lead narrator being the Sphinx and other commentary coming from Pyramids themselves.

The show is in different languages, the first two shows of the evening are in Arabic and English, but other languages are provided on later shows.

If visiting the Pyramids of Giza ensure you arrive early, just after the site is opened at either 07:00 or 08:00. This is before the crowds arrive and before the heat increases. It's also the best light to photograph.

Take a camel, horse or walk to the area south-south-west of the pyramids - close to the Pyramid of Menkaure and the three smaller "Pyramid of Queens". Here you have a perfect view of the entire plateau and surprisingly, it's an area that not too many people visit. When you get close you will see other people gathered at the viewing points in the area, so you cannot get lost.

Ensure you bring plenty of water too, for it is a very dry area to hike or ride and there are no vendors selling water nearby.

I love the creative process of deciding on and building Collections. After putting together a number of them over the past 2 years, there are some important lessons I've learnt.

Be Different
Number one is to try something different. Don't do what everyone else is doing, build a Collection that only you can build. For my travel photos, I post different locations to the usual tourist route and it is what I'm known for. Remember to not find your niche with your Collections, find your voice instead!

Choose A Narrow Theme
I've seen wonderful Collections of subway stations, doors and windows - it works beautifully. I tend to have mine a bit broader. For example, notice with the Egypt title, it says Lower Egypt - why? Because I know that any journey to Upper Egypt (Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel) is going to give me many dozens of photos to post, and I don't want my Collections to get too large - which would certainly occur is I put all my Egypt photos into one Collection.

Cover Photo and Colours
Look at the photo with this post - notice how I try to match the dominant colour in the cover photo with the colour of the Collections. This occurs in 4 of the 6 Collections - especially with Somaliland and Iconic Monuments. Iran is different, as there are so many colours coming through the window there is no dominant one, so purple seemed to match with the Collection name of "Majesty". Also Lower Egypt - the colour reminded me of what it was like to be in the tombs, that neutral colour - but not dark and depressing - it felt more vibrant to me, so I chose a lighter tone.

Order your Images Carefully
I always try to avoid posting similar images together. For example, in the Sana'a Collection, I try to mix images of people, buildings and cityscapes - you won't find too many of each clumped together. Likewise, for Indonesia, the images come from 5 different area I've visited in the country, but it is rare to see more than 2 photos from the same area posted in a row.

One of the great benefits in returning to Egypt after a long absence was exploring many new areas that are now open to the public.

The Tomb of Meresankh III is one example. She was the grand-daughter of Kheops (or Khufu) and wife of Khephren (or Khafre) - the builders of the two largest pyramids on Giza. It is the finest tomb I saw at Giza.

A most peculiar aspect of tombs is that it is extremely difficult to receive any mobile/cell phone coverage inside a tomb. For example in this tomb, stand adjacent to the open tomb door and there is no coverage, but take two steps and exit the tomb and coverage returns.

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo is one of the world's greatest museums. Built in 1901, it holds the world's finest collection of Ancient Egyptian items found anywhere.

Due to the large number of items on display and the limited amount of room, this old Museum is quite cramped in places, but it just adds to the mood. However, a newer and grander Museum is being constructed near the Giza pyramids, and within the next few years everything in this Museum will be moved to a new home.

This is the view of the main hall of the Museum, dominated by the restored statue of King Amenophis III and his wife, Queen Tyi.

One of the most finely decorated places in Saqqara is the Mastaba of Akhethotep and Ptahhotep that dates from approximately 2,400 BCE.

Akhethotep was from a family of important officials and the panels on the walls (called registers) show his importance with the large number of offerings. These include grains, vegetables and livestock.

Every evening on the Giza plateau, there is a 45 minute Sound and Light show that tells a small part of the history of ancient Egypt.

At dusk, the lights on the Pyramid of Khafre (or Chephren) on the left and Pyramid of Menkaure on the right, provide a wonderful sight.
