Game of Thrones is putting me in the awkward position of having to say “I agree that this is the obvious and inevitable conclusion of this character’s arc, but the writers got us there in the dumbest possible way.” It’s a difficult criticism to express without sounding petty, y’know?

A few days ago there was an article in a german newspaper that the parents of a vegan baby in Australia are in court because it is so under-developed, has no teeth and weighs too little for a 19-month-old. The baby was taken away from them and they might have to go to jail. They were also antivax but still. I hate that narrative... As if a plant based diet was poison or the like.

There are a whole bunch of these stories, and in every case what has actually happened is that the parents have subjected their child to neglect and abuse. Nobody uses abused children as a reason to argue against meat eating, so why is the fact that their parents were vegan suddenly relevant in these cases? As if there aren’t literally millions of people feeding their kids blatantly harmful, processed meats which are carcinogenic and completely inappropriate. I am so tired of seeing people using the abuse of a child as a way to further their anti-vegan agenda.

Them: Oh, no – I can’t believe we have to wait a whole year for the animated movie that will give our favourite cancelled cartoon the send-off it deserves!

Me, reading the latest creator blog post about the animated movie that will give my favourite cancelled cartoon the send-off it deserves that’s been “in production” since 1996:

There is nothing more mysterious than a TV set left on in an empty room. It is even stranger than a man talking to himself or a woman standing dreaming at her stove. It is as if another planet is communicating with you. Suddenly the TV reveals itself for what it really is: a video of another world, ultimately addressed to no one at all, delivering its images indifferently, indifferent to its own messages (you can easily imagine it still functioning after humanity has disappeared).

I’m not going to deny that Tumblr purity culture is a thing that exists, but I feel it’s worth pointing out that a very big chunk of the apparent tendency for LGBT-friendly media to be held to impossibly higher standards than media with no LGBT representation whatsoever boils down to a calculated misdirection.

The people who are all in favour of LGBT representation in principle, but manage without fail to find a reason to object to any particular instance of LGBT representation?

Those are homophobes.

Acting like they’re 100% on your side when talking theory while simultaneously shitting all over any attempt to put that theory into practice is how they get you.

Yesterday was the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, and activists took to Twitter to amplify the stories and stats around this crisis. News outlets should work to bring public awareness to this issue.

The Guardian has started a series called Not Invisible, which seeks to shed light on the violence that Indigenous women face. Other outlets should follow suit in investigating and sharing the stories of Indigenous women.

With all these separate streaming services looking more and more like cable, think we’ll see a resurgence of the old fashion video rental stores? My old ass kinda misses it.

I actually work @ a thrift store, and weve beem seeing more ppl come in to buy movies secondhand over the last few months. Turns out being able to have something you can hold on to is a better way of spending money than on a recurring subscription to ephemeral content which charges you every month regardless of if you actually use it.

Idk i doubt rental stores will rly come back, but i can see like 3-4 different competing versions of redbox or smth, eventually some of them being owned by the same streaming platforms as they realize the streaming well is starting to dry up tho

You ever notice how the old “actually, the plucky female supporting character was cleverly manipulating the villain by allowing him to graphically torture her” bit is almost never permitted to actually be effective? It’s often framed as a victory, but if you’re paying attention to how things subsequently play out, usually the information she’s gained is either irrelevant to the A plot or arrives just slightly too late to be useful, and when it is both relevant and timely it’s often revealed that the male lead had already figured it out on his own before she got there. Like, apparently it’s not enough to dress up voyeuristic torture porn as Girl Power™ – they also have to go out of their way to render the whole execise narratively pointless.

(To anticipate the obvious response, no, this is not specifically a Joss Whedon callout, though he is a big fan of the trope, to the point of using it twice in one movie on at least one occasion.)

Netflix’s selection is so lousy these days that I honestly keep forgetting it exists.

I’ll be like “hey, that new Netflix series looks great – I wish I could watch it”.

And then days later I remember: I have Netflix.
