Der Spiesser =  a square, bourgeois, philistine, conformist, a petty person.

Someone who cares a whole lot what the neighbors (or other people in general) think of them and what is “proper” behavior. Must not embarrass oneself! There is only 1 way to do things and it’s THEIR way; there is only 1 way to think about things and it is their way. They dislike anything that is different from the norm, anything not completely mainstream or average - it makes them uncomfortable. A person who is totally conventional and wants everyone else to be, too. So they can feel safe and won’t have to deal with change. Prone to gossip or talking badly about people who don’t fit their idea of how a person should be. Will not budge from their opinion, no matter what. Won’t try new things, resistant to change, other countries, different foods. 0% open-minded. 100% stubborn. A true killjoy and party pooper. Watch for them, lurking behind curtains, watching your every move. ;)

I wanted to address something that I have been seeing around a lot. You can be on the aromantic spectrum and enjoy reading and writing romance!!! I like reading romance, I think it’s cute, and I don’t mind producing content with romance in it either! When people try to invalidate aromanticism by saying things like ‘you can’t be aro… you like romance in novels!’ that is horse shit!

Just because I like reading about a certain thing and can appreciate it doesn’t mean that I feel romantic attraction to anyone, or want that kind of relationship for myself! Your identity is not invalid because of the content that you consume. It really bewilders me when people try to tell others about their own identities? Anyway. Rant over.

I dont get object pronouns at all. Which ones are indirect objects and which ones are direct objects? Where do you place them? Does placement change depending on the clause type (depnt. indpnt. subord. etc.)? Is se the only one with SO many uses? Reflexive verbs are also very confusing. Do I use se for every tense of a reflexive verb or do i use different ones depending on each? Its all very confusing.

Direct objects are things that receive the actions of verbs.

Indirect objects are typically people or personified objects that receive the result of the verb; “to whom” or “for whom” something is done, or sent, or given, or asked, or told.

Reflexives are when the subject and object are the same thing. It is something acting upon itself. The difference between “talking to someone else” and “talking to yourself”.

It’s really only going to be the 3rd person singular and plural object pronouns you need to worry about.

For direct objects, indirect objects, and reflexives the pronouns for “me”, “you”, us”, and for vosotros (if you’re using it) are the same; me, te, nos, os.

Direct objects are frequently translated as “it” or “them” and is dependent on gender and number: lo, la, los, las

Indirect objects are frequently “to him/her” or “to them” in a way, and only really depend on number: le, les. And you’ve seen the indirect objects presumably with gustar and its type of verbs already.

Reflexive verbs for 3rd person singular and plural are simply se, and it is the verb that determines who it applies to… so se afeita could be “he/she shaves” or “You (formal) shave”… and then se afeitan is “they shave”.

And yes, se has other functions aside from reflexive. Its other functions are used when indirect and direct objects work together.

It also shows up for impersonal or passive functions, which has nothing to do with reflexive.

"woah, you speak __ languages, you must be very talented!!" NO. I spent hours every day for years studying it. I spoke it every time I had the chance to. I put effort into it. I cried my eyeballs out because of failing again and again and again. Don't you dare erase all the effort I put into it and blame it on my so called talent. Learning languages is hard too. Why. People. Don't. Get. This.
