BUNIA – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is ramping up an already sizeable relief operation for conflict-displaced people in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following renewed inter-ethnic violence that has forced tens of thousands more from their homes. In Ebola-afflicted Ituri province, where a resurgence of clashes between ethnic groups has claimed at least 160 lives in recent weeks, WFP intends to triple, to 300,000, the number of internally displaced people (IDPs) it supports with life-saving food and cash.
Highlights
In 2019, WFP continues its corporate emergency response interventions, with the aim of assisting 5.1 million people with food assistance and nutrition programmes and has already reached 2.1 million people during the first quarter.
Now eleven months since the beginning of the Ebola outbreak, the epidemic continues, with over 2,300 cases and 1,500 deaths reported. WFP continues to provide critical operational support to the medical response teams and provides food and nutrition assistance to Ebola affected people.

Background
More than seven years after civil unrest erupted in Libya during the 2011 Arab Spring, the country continues to face widespread insecurity. Recurrent clashes among local armed factions controlling different parts of the country have led to extreme instability and political divisions.
According to the 2018 Libya Humanitarian Response Plan, three million people inside Libya have been impacted by the conflict and ongoing crisis, and over one million people are in need of humanitarian assistance.

Collecting primary data on households’ food security can be challenging, time consuming and costly ‒ particularly in areas with limited humanitarian access. Remote data collection is a flexible and efficient way to collect food security information and it allows for frequent food security monitoring in unstable areas without putting the enumerators at risk.
This course aims to give a clear understanding of what remote food security monitoring entails, when it is a useful tool, and how to implement a remote food security monitoring project.
