Conversely, Vim has plugins to provide IDE-like functions for Java development.

Context-aware omnicomplete for Java is the thing I used most in Eclipse, and javacomplete works for that.

NERDtree is a completely vestigial plugin. Netrw did it fist, and better. I replaced it with 14 lines in my vimrc.

Then I started using Ctrl-P and stopped using netrw.

\w is PCRE compatible, but AFAIK ereg doesn't support it.
