Favourite 2015 "good songs from bad/mediocre albums" thread by [deleted] in indieheads

[–]SidtheMagicLobster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never really fell in love with In Colour as a whole the way so many other people seemed to, but I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times) was one of my favorite tracks from this year. It's goofy and dynamic, a standout from the album where other tracks just kind of feel like Jamie on autopilot.

Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper was an alright project. It's punchier than Tomboy, but I have some foibles with the pacing/approach/tracklist. But Tropic of Cancer (with its companion piece Lonely Wanderer) is a career highlight, imo. It's a gorgeous, spare, and sincere, and showcases what Panda Bear does best.

Even though Haim's remix of 'Cause I'm A Man isn't on the album proper, I'm gonna include it on here anyways. I kind of wish it had been, guest vocalists might have added some nice variety to Currents, and made the weirdo tracks like Past Life stick out a little less.

My personal theory: Kevin Parker's pulling strings behind the scenes, shutting out competition for the funky white dude accolades this year.

I'm really bummed to see this too! IDLS has grown on me a ton since it's come out.

If you were to die right after you listened to one last album of your choice, what album would you pick? by DeCrackers in indieheads

The Avalanche's Since I Left You

It'd get me jazzed for whatever lies ahead, if anything; at the very least it'd be a great note to end on!

What are some songs that were recorded in one take? by willforthrill in indieheads

IIRC, the Contortion's cover of "I Can't Stand Myself" was done as a warm-up of sorts in studio, but ended up on the final tracklist of No New York.

I feel like the real obstruction for redditors would her being a socialist/feminist/disabled rights advocate; she'd be denounced as a SJW and booed off the site in all about 5 minutes.

God-tier sleeping albums? by placebomunch in indieheads

Can's Future Days (if Moonshake doesn't get you dancing right in the middle!)

Fripp And Eno - Equatorial Stars

Boards of Canada, MHtRtC/Campfire Headphase

And as much as people pooh-pooh The King Of Limbs, it goes really well with an afternoon nap.

What are great albums that are overlooked because of masterpieces by the band? by Moon-Safari in indieheads

[–]SidtheMagicLobster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both great choices! I love how cold Pygmalion is. I could see why others wouldn't enjoy it, but I might honestly prefer it to Souvlaki.

I love Isn't Anything and the EP's front to back as well. They have much more range than the people who make vacuum cleaner jokes give them credit for. Loveless really is a jump up, though, especially lyrically!

The Velvet Underground - Squeeze by feedthecollapse in LetsTalkMusic

[–]SidtheMagicLobster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel like Squeeze doesn't entirely deserve the scathing reviews it's accumulated, at least when viewing the content for itself. (As a follow-up to Loaded, it is a complete failure.) Aside from the peurile innuendo of a cover, it keeps things safe. There's nothing really wrong with the content, it's just dull. Which unfortunately is a high crime when viewed through the legacy of VU as the arch-art rock band of all time. I have no doubt perspective would be less heated if it had been released as a Yule solo debut, if not forgotten entirely.

I really have to feel for the dude. The Velvet Underground was a rough lesson on the music industry for all the members, but I think Yule perhaps had it the roughest here. Squeeze is the sound of someone getting in over their head, put to tape.

As for the topic of bad blood, I believe Reed and Cale agreed not to invite Yule to join when the band toured in the 90's, but perhaps that had more to do with the band wanting to tour as their most avant-garde incarnation than any residual bad feelings.

Albums and the stories behind them (ex: The Disintegration Loops). by SUN-BAT-HER in LetsTalkMusic

[–]SidtheMagicLobster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Music can develop a life of its own, but it's certainly not created in a vacuum. Great works of art can often stand alone by themselves and be appreciated for their qualities, but benefit from understanding their context. J Dilla recorded and released Donuts as he was dying of a blood disorder, Sly and the Family Stone's There's A Riot Goin' On mirrors the turmoil/atrophy felt on national and personal scale, as Sly Stone was sinking into addiction. The circumstances of both albums lend a poignancy that complements two already-great works.

That's not to say the narrative around an album can't eclipse a work to its detriment, but more often than not I feel it's something important to recognize!

What's some relatively unknown singer/songwriters you enjoy? by wormintorS94 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]SidtheMagicLobster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I adore Jeremy Messersmith! I've only been to see him live once, and it was cut short by a thunderstorm moving in, unfortunately.

On a related/local note, I've been digging Haley Bonar's stuff lately, I hope she continues her move from folk into indie/alternative. Her newest album Last War had some really great cuts on it; I really hope she refines the new wave sound/folk simplicity that made songs like From A Cage one of my favorites this year.

David Lynch on Product Placement (0:34) by Anaekasm in videos

[–]SidtheMagicLobster 34 points35 points  (0 children)

David Lynch's body of work is known for being pretty out there, he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who likes to compromise his vision. I imagine he's pretty opposed to advertisers co-opting or diluting a movie's message with product placement.

What is the stupidest thing a US politician has ever said? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SidtheMagicLobster 19 points20 points  (0 children)

According to wiki:

In December 2009, Johnson revealed that he had been battling Hepatitis C (HCV) for over a decade, which resulted in slow speech and a tendency to regularly get "lost in thought in the middle of a discussion".[33] Johnson said that he learned he had the disease in 1998 but did not know how he contracted it. HCV-induced liver dysfunction often leads to Hepatic encephalopathy, a cause of confusion. Symptoms are often reversible with treatment.[34] The disease damaged his liver and led to thyroid problems.[33] He was treated with a combination of ribavirin and interferon at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.[33] In February 2010, Johnson successfully completed an experimental treatment for Hepatitis C, which resulted in restored mental acuity, weight gain and increased energy.[35]

This video was about a month after completing treatment, so maybe he wasn't all there still?

Musicians who disown their great album? by ChrisMorrison93 in Music

[–]SidtheMagicLobster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Although I wouldn't consider Nico as having one singlular great album, apparently she really hated Chelsea Girl.

I still cannot listen to it, because everything I wanted for that record, they took it away. I asked for drums, they said no. I asked for more guitars, they said no. And I asked for simplicity, and they covered it in flutes! [...] They added strings and – I didn't like them, but I could live with them. But the flute! The first time I heard the album, I cried and it was all because of the flute.
