I find meeting in the middle is always a safe bet, but it depends on what song mood you're going for and how large the BPM difference is.

If the instrumental and vocals are pretty similar (i.e. 1-10 BPM difference) you're safe going either way, however any more than that and you're probably safer going faster than slower.

Whichever mashup got the most upvotes that week. Lets say the mashup that got upvoted the most used the vocals from "Rolling In The Deep" in their mashup. The base layer for everyone competing in the next week would be the instrumental track of "Rolling In The Deep", or like you said another song instrumental by Adele etc.

Yeah that makes sense, just as long as its more about trying to make the best sounding mashup where everyone has the same base layer (instrumental) to use.
