Sega’s streaming restrictions continue with Puyo Puyo Tetris (update)

Another Sega game is hitting consoles with some very detailed streaming restrictions. Unlike Persona 5, published by Sega’s recently purchased subsidiary Atlus, this latest one isn’t a sprawling role-playing game. Streaming or uploading footage from Puyo Puyo Tetris now comes with a long set of rules, and Sega isn’t afraid to reprimand players who violate them. The video uploading guidelines for the game, which is out stateside on April 25 for Nintendo Switch and PS4, are found on the Japanese Puyo Puyo website. Players who want to share clips from their Puyo Puyo Tetris may do so on their “personal and non-profit blog, homepage and Twitter,” the website says. They can even upload footage to video sites — but not if they’re for commercial use. That should knock off platforms like...

Dark Souls-inspired The Surge shows off a promising loot mechanic

The Surge has a new trailer out today showing off its looting mechanic as well as some detailed in-game footage. If you were put off by the team at Deck13 so explicitly aping the Dark Souls franchise, it might be time to take a second look. This new video of the action role-playing game in action shows an interesting take on hardcore melee combat. Called “Target, Loot and Equip,” it shows the main character sizing up opponents in advance, pinpointing which of their limbs they want to take home with them. Then, in the final moments of combat, they decisively sever their prize and carry it away. “The Surge’s combat system lets you target enemies’ specific body parts before damaging them,” writes creative director Jan Klose. “The resulting dismembered part then determines what piece of...

Mass Effect: Andromeda’s improved eyes make a big difference

Mass Effect: Andromeda’s 1.05 patch is live now, and fans are already noting the improvements and changes to the game. The increase in inventory space and new graphical options are welcome, but the change in how human and Asari eyes are rendered is surprisingly large. It may seem like a subtle thing, but the eyes have gone from looking like they were painted onto the character to having actual depth and expression. This doesn’t go all the way to fixing the visual shortcomings of the game, but it’s a large step towards having the characters look a little less creepy. Look at the huge difference. Man that is so much better. I hope it's replicated on my Ryder. pic.twitter.com/a3gQCwqshS— Alex Ryder (@Alex_N7_) April 6, 2017 You can watch a brief video comparison below as well. H...

Final Fantasy 14 and its expansion are on sale for super cheap

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn is one of our favorite MMOs, and its first expansion pack, Heavensward, largely carried that quality forward. Now developer Square Enix is preparing for the launch of a second expansion pack, Stormblood. But if you haven’t actually got into the game yet, this might be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. Humble Bundle is currently running a deal where both Final Fantasy 14 and Heavensward can be purchased for a mere $19.79 — or about $10 off the usual asking price. That price can be lowered a further 10 percent if you’re a Humble Monthly subscriber, and as with all Humble Bundle purchases, you can choose to give five percent of your purchase to a charity, such as American Red Cross or Child’s Play. It’s worth noting that Final Fantasy 14 is a...

Streamers are streaming Persona 5 despite threats of bans from Atlus

Despite publisher Atlus announcing yesterday it would take action against Persona 5 players who uploaded or streamed certain parts of the game, people are doing just that. On YouTube and Twitch, searches for Persona 5 result in a number of streamers playing through the game, clearly disobeying Atlus’ guidelines. The developer stated in a blog post that people could stream or upload videos of gameplay as long as it didn’t surpass the 7/7 mark in the game. Failure to abide by the rules could result in bans for players, which has led to many of the streamers naming their streams absolutely ridiculous titles. AdmiralBahroo/Twitch Haitharr/Twitch MotokoSMASH/Twitch Players have also discovered ways to get around streaming past...

NBA Playgrounds, a game outed at the end of February's Nintendo Switch Direct showcase, was confirmed by its maker today and will launch in May for the Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. In this trailer, given to IGN today, NBA Playgrounds is shown to be a 2-on-2 arcade style basketball game in the tradition of NBA Jam. Big-headed current stars and all-time greats pull off twirling dunks from high above the rim. The players, who include active all-stars like Steph Curry and James Harden, along with new hall-of-famers Shaquille O’Neal and Allen Iverson, will be leveled up as players use them. IGN says NBA Playgrounds will feature solo play plus local and online multiplayer. It's being developed by Saber Interactive and will retail, download only, for $20. Once a prolific...

Blackwood Crossing review

Blackwood Crossing is a game about the loss of loved ones. This might lead you to worry that Blackwood Crossing is a grim and dark affair, to turn away and look for something cheerier. And, yes, there are sections of this game that draw us into the gloomy dungeons of despair. But these dank locations mostly serve as contrast to a blooming, life-affirming ode to love, family and the wonder of children. It's a three-hour first-person adventure in which teenage girl Scarlett tries to make sense of her younger brother Finn's intense emotional needs. The children were orphaned while Finn was still very small. He is angry and confused by his attempts to reconcile this terrible loss, of a love he has no recollection of experiencing. These bewildering feelings are exacerbated by Scarlett's...

Persona 5 director gives disappointing reason for passing on female lead

Persona 5 only includes a male playable character, and the game’s director has a questionable excuse for that. In an interview with Waypoint, Katsura Hashino explained that players can only assume the role of a man because adding a woman would have been “a huge amount” of work. “Honestly, to put that [female character] option into the game, we’d have to cut out other things to compensate for the workload, and every time that’s the situation we’ll basically say, ‘it’s not worth it,’” Hashino said. How this would have been additional work, Hashino doesn’t say. Looking at Persona 3 Portable, the only game in the series that allows players to be a boy or girl, may explain his perspective. The definitive, PlayStation Portable-exclusive version of that game allowed players to choose whether...

One Horizon Zero Dawn player is turning the game into artful GIFs

Horizon Zero Dawn is the latest contender for “best-looking console game ever made,” and with its incredibly detailed open world, unnaturally beautiful lighting and weather effects, and rock-solid performance at 4K resolution, it may capture the crown for the moment. It’s gorgeous on its own, but one Twitter user, SunhiLegend, has been getting a good deal of attention for producing clips that make Horizon Zero Dawn look like a balletic action movie. Hermen Hulst, managing director at Horizon Zero Dawn developer Guerrilla Games, has taken notice. Hulst has retweeted two of SunhiLegend’s GIFs over the past week, noting in one tweet that the clips make the game’s combat “feel like a dance with wild animals.” Here’s that one: https://t.co/cJlV1xsrXu#HorizonZeroDawn p...

Mass Effect: Andromeda becomes an early access game after launch

Mass Effect: Andromeda is a game that suffered from animation issues and a number of rough edges that hurt the enjoyment of the story itself. It’s nearly impossible to sit back and get lost in a world when that world has yet to be finished. Yesterday, BioWare announced that a series of patches would fix many of these problems, and these patches would be released “over the next two months.” Congratulations, you bought an early access game that you thought was finished. If you know that changes this large are going to be made to the game in the future, why the hell would you pay for an unfinished game today? This is kind of a big deal “We like to think of games and game development as services that grow and evolve with the involvement of customers and the community,” Steam says about...

Report: PlayStation VR heading to arcades

Sony plans to place PlayStation VR headsets in entertainment facilities in Japan, according to a report sourced by the Wall Street Journal. A new “location-based entertainment” unit inside Sony Interactive Entertainment will lead the virtual reality initiative and look for partners in various industries including VR arcades, according to the report. There are no current plans for Sony to run its own center, though. Last year, Polygon reported on the growing importance of virtual reality arcades in helping to push the technology into become more mainstream. While different forms of VR arcades have been around since the late ’90s, it hasn’t been until recently that new virtual reality gaming centers have been gaining massive popularity around the world, first in China, then in other parts...

Atlus warns Persona 5 streamers not to spoil the game

Atlus has issued some strict streaming and video content guidelines for Persona 5 players, going so far as to threaten content creators with account suspensions if they fail to stick to the rules. “Simply put, we don’t want the experience to be spoiled for people who haven’t played the game,” the publisher wrote on its website. “Our fans have waited years for the game to come out and we really want to make sure they can experience it fully as a totally new adventure.” While content guidelines are par for the course for reviewers with early copies, these are some heavy stipulations for the average consumer. Chief among them: Streams and uploads of the long-awaited role-playing game must not reference “specific plot points or story spoilers.” That means no scenes of teens romancing other...

BioWare promises to improve Mass Effect: Andromeda over time

The criticisms of Mass Effect: Andromeda have been numerous and emphatic so far. BioWare said today that it has heard that feedback, and in response, the company laid out a plan to fix the game’s technical issues and improve its overall quality. In a post on the Mass Effect website, BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn stopped short of issuing any sort of apology for Andromeda’s problems, but said the studio “has been poring over your comments and feedback, looking to discover what you like about the game, as well as areas we can evolve or improve.” Flynn noted that BioWare is releasing a patch this Thursday, April 6, that will fix a number of bugs and introduce some improvements that fans have been asking for. The version 1.05 patch will resolve problems such as saves not working...

Blizzard wins $8 million judgment against Overwatch cheat maker

Blizzard Entertainment has won a default judgment against a Germany-based maker of cheats for Overwatch, World of Warcraft and other games. Bossland GMBH has been ordered to pay Blizzard $8.6 million by a federal court in California. The judgment was entered after Bossland chose not to defend itself, following a denial of its motion earlier this month to have the case thrown out for a lack of jurisdiction. The money accounts for 42,818 counts of copyright infringement; Blizzard argued that Bossland, in creating bots called "Honorbuddy," "Watchover Tyrant," "Hearthbuddy" and others, had bypassed Blizzard anti-cheat protection, altered its games without permission, and effectively resold its code. Blizzard brought the suit against Bossland for its development and sale of the Overwatch...

Persona 5 guide: 10 tips for your first 20 hours

Persona 5 is a complicated game with a lot of working systems. It goes from being very scripted in the intro to offering you a lot of free time as you get closer to your first palace (the equivalent of a dungeon in this game). After about 20 hours spent with Persona 5, there are a few things that we wish we would have known before we started. In this guide, we’ll teach you how to be better than us. Always listen to Morgana This seems like a fairly straightforward tip, but seriously: Do not ignore the talking cat. Once Morgana makes his way into your life, he will drop hint after hint at you. Some of these are very clear instructions, while others are suggestions. Regardless, talk to him and heed his advice. If you find yourself struggling, you may not be listening to Morgana. He is...

Yooka-Laylee review

Yooka-Laylee is proof that sometimes our fondest memories should stay in the past. The Kickstarter success story promised a new version of classic Rare-developed titles from the Nintendo 64 era, recapturing our fuzzy memories of games like the Banjo-Kazooie franchise, with a bit of Donkey Kong 64 thrown in there for good measure. The game’s Kickstarter exploded, setting records for the crowdfunding platform. Developer Playtonic has been carefully faithful to what made those first games memorable, from the charming main characters to the focus on platforming, puzzle solving and secrets. But well-regarded as those games were, 19 years have passed since the first Banjo-Kazooie, and Yooka-Laylee remains too true to that original formula — even when it means not ditching game design ideas...

Overwatch teases big announcement coming next week

Overwatch's social media is teasing a major revelation for the game coming April 11. Fans have, per the norm, gone bonkers with anticipation. Initiating archive declassification…Mission files unlock: April 11RETWEET to confirm. pic.twitter.com/GUvthyskCm— Overwatch (@PlayOverwatch) April 3, 2017 The teaser went out at the top of the hour on Overwatch's global Twitter account. Already on Reddit, Overwatch fans are picking it apart for clues. The ability icons of seven heroes are identifiable, and the reference to King's Row invokes a map in the game, one of the first made for the game and available during its beta last year. A rotating 3D model of Tracer also is shown briefly. There’s some kind of a flyer or poster referencing a “mandatory robot registration,” most likely pointing...

Jak and Daxter games coming to PS4 as PS2 Classics

Four entries in Naughty Dog’s beloved Jak and Daxter series are on their way to the PlayStation 4, Sony announced today. Jak and Daxter is the first full Sony franchise to get the PlayStation 2 Classics treatment on the PS4. The company is porting all three games in Naughty Dog’s original trilogy — 2001’s Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, 2003’s Jak 2 and 2004’s Jak 3 — as well as the studio’s 2005 spinoff, Jak X: Combat Racing. Sony pointed out that the PS4 debut of Jak X will be the first time anyone has been able to buy the game since its release; right now, it isn’t available digitally in any form. The company did release the Jak and Daxter trilogy on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in the Jak and Daxter Collection, but that package did not include the vehicular combat...
