PlayStation Plus games for March 2017 include Tearaway, Severed (correction)

This month’s PlayStation Plus lineup, which Sony announced today, is led by the launch of a new game: the buzzed-about arcade sports title Disc Jam. Developed by High Horse Entertainment, a group of ex-Activision developers with experience working on Call of Duty, Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero, Disc Jam is a mix of tennis and air hockey. The game supports one-on-one or two-on-two play with a bunch of characters, each of which has unique abilities, and High Horse has been running a beta that has gotten a very positive response. Disc Jam will debut on PlayStation 4, along with March’s other PlayStation Plus games, on March 7. It’s the same release strategy as another indie sports game, Psyonix’s Rocket League, which was a free PlayStation Plus game when it launched on PS4 in July 2015. Disc...

EA executive Peter Moore becomes CEO of Liverpool FC

Peter Moore, the former EA Sports president and currently Electronic Arts’ chief competition officer, will leave the company for what must be a childhood dream job: chief executive of Liverpool Football Club, his favorite soccer club. Moore, 61, will join the club in this new role over the summer, Liverpool said in a statement today. He joined Electronic Arts in the summer of 2007, in a reorganization that brought all of the EA Sports titles under a single office. A Liverpool native, Moore has made no secret of his love for The Reds. As EA Sports president, he had a conference room at Electronic Arts' Redwood Shores headquarters painted red and named "Anfield," the club’s home ground. Andrew Wilson, the Electronic Arts chief executive who followed Moore as EA Sports president (and is a...

Minecraft sales hit 122M copies

Minecraft continues to sell at a mind-boggling pace: Developer Mojang has now sold 122 million copies of the sandbox exploration game across all platforms, the Microsoft-owned Swedish studio announced today. Microsoft’s previous milestone was 100 million copies, which Minecraft reached in early June 2016. That means that a whopping 22 million people bought a copy of the game in the last nine months. Asked by Polygon, a Microsoft representative clarified that although the company has been allowing owners of the original Java-based PC/Mac version of Minecraft to get a free copy of Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, Microsoft does not include those redemptions in its sales calculation. “The 122M units is paid units to players only,” the spokesperson told Polygon. Mojang also announced today...

Bring a Guardian home without breaking the bank

Destiny is finally getting great action figures you can afford

Destiny is one of the most well-known video games on the planet, but fans of the game don’t have many options if they want to buy Destiny toys. Mega Bloks offers a wide array of figurines and vehicles, and while they’re well-made and available on the cheap, you may not be into the company’s “baby’s first action figure” aesthetic. On the high end, you have 3A’s incredible 12-inch Guardian statues, which are collectibles with a price to match: nearly $200. This year, McFarlane Toys is jumping in with some Destiny figures that are more traditional. The company brought the entire lineup to Toy Fair NY this week, and as you can see in the photos below, these are some fine toys — especially at the mass-market prices they’ll be sold for. McFarlane is producing one 7-inch Guardian figure for...

Catherine is unflinching, messy and uplifting — just like real life

Catherine is one of the most divisive games I’ve ever loved. The game makes many people uncomfortable, which is a completely understandable reaction. Catherine is a game about a bunch of flawed men and the unlucky women in their lives. The main character is cheating on his fiancee. It’s overtly gory, sexual and weird. It’s also a puzzle game. It’s really hard to describe to people, in general. Polygon/Atlus Co. It looks like this. And I love it, because it’s a game about making mistakes and becoming a better person. Or not. The choice is up to you. I’m not trying to talk anyone out of their negative Catherine feelings. Your comfort levels are your own. But there’s a reason a game about cheating men and the women they hurt is so fascinating. Vincent’s...

NBA 2K17’s Sacramento Kings wouldn’t make that DeMarcus Cousins trade

The Sacramento Kings and the New Orleans Pelicans just pulled off a blockbuster trade, with the Kings shipping out one of the league’s best players in DeMarcus Cousins a year before he’s set to become a free agent. The deal, which our friends at SB Nation called “one of the worst trades in NBA history,” is so imbalanced in the Pelicans’ favor that even the video game version of the Kings wouldn’t agree to it. Here’s a full breakdown of the trade, along with each player’s current rating in NBA 2K17: Sacramento Kings get: SG Tyreke Evans, 78 SG Buddy Hield, 74 SG Langston Galloway, 74 2017 first-round draft pick 2017 second-round draft pick New Orleans Pelicans get: C DeMarcus Cousins, 93 SF Omri Cassipi, 70 At a 93 overall in NBA 2K17, Cousins is currently the seventh-best player in...

Terraria tops 20 million copies sold

Terraria developer Re-Logic has now sold more than 20 million copies of the sandbox game, the studio announced today. Re-Logic actually hit the milestone before the end of 2016, the company said. Terraria debuted in May 2011 on Windows PC, meaning that it took about five and a half years for the game to reach the 20 million mark. According to Re-Logic, 8.5 million of those 20 million copies were sold in the 18-month period between June 2015 — the release of the version 1.3 update, a significant one — and the end of 2016. “The entire team would like to say a massive THANK YOU to all of you for making all of this possible,” Re-Logic said in a news release. “It has been a pleasure to have all of you along on the journey thus far, and we are really looking forward to continuing down that...

Sony ending PlayStation Now support on PS3, Vita and more

PlayStation Now, Sony’s full-game streaming service, will soon be discontinued on every platform outside of PlayStation 4 and Windows PC, the company announced today. “After thoughtful consideration, we decided to shift our focus and resources to PS4 and Windows PC to further develop and improve the user experience on these two devices,” said Brian Dunn, senior marketing manager for PlayStation Now. “This move puts us in the best position to grow the service even further.” Sony officially launched PlayStation Now in January 2015 on PS4, and brought the service to PlayStation 3 in May 2015. The company added support for PC, where you can use a PS4 controller with a USB dongle, last summer. PlayStation Now is also available on PlayStation Vita, PlayStation TV, Sony Blu-ray players and a...

Who is your video game Valentine?

It’s Valentine’s Day, and for some of us that means curling up on the couch for an intimate night with a beloved game. Maybe you’ll use this sacred day to stuff chalky candy hearts in your mouth and revisit your favorite love interest. Perhaps you will be lulled to sleep by Garrus Vakarian’s sultry musings about calibrations. The perfect end to a perfect day. But cruel fate dealt us a raw deal. There are many NPCs who will neither kiss, flirt, nor fuck your avatar. What is to be done? Let’s take a moment to put on some smooth jazz and remember all the NPCs that remain off-limits to our horny hearts. Here are some of the Polygon staff’s favorite non-romanceable NPCs. EA fines Madden Bowl winner $3K for ‘inappropriate’ tweets (update)

The winner of the most high-profile Madden NFL esports competition to date was hit with a significant fine and a rankings penalty this week, the result of tweets that “referenced inappropriate content,” according to publisher Electronic Arts. Chris “Dubby” McFarland defeated Eric “Problem” Wright, 24-17, in the Madden Bowl 2017 finals, which were held in Houston on the night of Feb. 3. McFarland’s first-place share of the tournament’s $250,000 prize pool was $75,000. As McFarland, 29, was making his way through the eight-person bracket, people began to search through his past tweets. It turns out that McFarland, who is white, has a history of using racial slurs on Twitter to describe black people, including “coon” and the N-word (warning: link contains NSFW language). E...

Grand Theft Auto 5 tops 75 million units shipped

Rockstar Games has shipped more than 75 million copies of Grand Theft Auto 5 worldwide, parent company Take-Two Interactive announced today. The news came in an investor release for the third quarter of Take-Two’s 2017 fiscal year, which ends March 31; the third quarter ran from October-December 2016. The company’s most recent update on GTA 5 sales came in early November, when it said it had shipped over 70 million units. That means that Rockstar shipped approximately 5 million more copies of the game in the past three months, and about 15 million over the past year. Take-Two said that both GTA 5 and its online component, Grand Theft Auto Online, have surpassed expectations in “every quarter since their release.” Rockstar originally released the game on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in...

PlayStation Plus lineup for February includes LittleBigPlanet 3

PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive a slate of free games in February that includes the creation-focused co-op adventure LittleBigPlanet 3 and the pixelated shooter Not a Hero, Sony announced today. LittleBigPlanet 3, which launched in 2014, was the first entry in the franchise to not be developed by series creator Media Molecule; it was made by Sumo Digital. Although the game was released on both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, it’s not a cross-buy title, so only the PS4 version is free this month on PlayStation Plus. Roll7’s Not a Hero debuted in 2015 on Android and PC, and was released on PS4 and Xbox One last year. It’s one of the other four PS4 games for February. Breakfall’s Starwhal and the Extended Edition of Dreampainters Software’s Anna are the two free PS3 titles,...

The sale also includes nearly 80 movies to buy or rent at deep discounts. There are some good deals on games you may have missed out on, like the Definitive Editions of Tomb Raider and Sleeping Dogs. Skyrim helped me fix my relationship with food

Roast chickens, venison stew, apple dumplings, cabbages … these are the items that fill my Skyrim character’s bloated pouches. Though certainly not the most efficient way to play, I’ve always opted out of purchasing potions to restore health — although I’d certainly use them if I had them — and instead turned toward the stuff that’s lying around everywhere: food. Found scraps of food in Skyrim are a cheap way to keep health up, although you’re going to need lots of it to heal completely. And I had loads of it. Food is power in Skyrim, whether it’s boar meat stripped right from the bone or a pile of cheese wheels stolen from the vendor next door. This didn’t extend to my own reality. My body was shriveled, and my bones were as brittle as ice at the dawn of spring. Anorexia plagued me...

Persona 5 trailer offers new glimpse of stylish adventuring

Atlus has released a smart new trailer for PlayStation 4 adventuring role-playing game Persona 5. The stylish slice of marketing shows teenage protagonists exploring palaces and fighting with enemies, while making use of their combat personas. A pretty graphical overlay gives the whole thing an extra zing. In Persona 5, players take on the lives of youngsters who go about ordinary lives in modern day Tokyo, but who also journey to a fantasy realm on a magical treasure hunt. Released in Japan last year, it's due out in the rest of the world on April 4.

Guilty Gear’s newest fighter is a ninja businessman

Arc System Works will release a new version of Guilty Gear Xrd — the fighting game’s third iteration — called Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 this spring in arcades and later on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC. The biggest additions to Guilty Gear Xrd are two new characters: Answer and Baiken. As seen in the announcement trailer released by Arc System Works this weekend, Answer is a “business ninja” who emerges from hiding to take important phone calls. He also uses business cards bearing his contact details as projectiles in battle. Like any respectable video game ninja, he also boasts an izuna drop as part of his moveset. Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2’s other new fighter is Baiken, a longtime series staple. She appeared in the original Guilty Gear released way back in 1998. Arc System...

Uncharted movie has a script, writer boasts it’s a ‘beast’

The Uncharted movie has a script, at last, possibly clearing the way for filming to begin this spring on the oft-delayed project. Joe Carnahan (The A-Team) posted an image of its title page yesterday to Instagram, calling it "monstrously cool" and "a BEAST." Carnahan was brought aboard this summer to take a crack at an Uncharted adaptation, which has been chewed over since 2009. Done and Dusted. Now the REAL work begins. If there's a more monstrously cool action script in Hollywood right now, I wanna read it, 'cuz this thing is a BEAST. A photo posted by Joe Carnahan (@carnojoe) on Jan 7, 2017 at 1:28pm PST Sony and producers Avi and Ari Arad have gone through at least three potential directors and two writing teams since then, and was supposed to begin filming in 2015. Platinum’s Ninja Turtles game pulled from digital stores after less than a year

PlatinumGames’ poorly received action game based on the Ninja Turtles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, is no longer for sale digitally. The game appears to have been pulled from all digital retailers less than eight months after it first went on sale. Mutants in Manhattan was released on May 24, 2016 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. As of this week, the game is no longer listed or available for sale on the PlayStation Store, Steam or Xbox Games Store. The game is not available digitally through the Humble Store or Amazon, though physical copies of Mutants in Manhattan are still available for purchase from the latter retailer. It’s not clear why Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan was unceremoniously delisted digitally, but...
