Take the Lead to Make Your Community
#Beadfree
EVERY DAY PEOPLE ASK US,
"WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT PLASTIC POLLUTION?"
Our Microbeads Action Campaign guides you through steps and ideas of how you can educate
your community about microbeads and the greater issue of plastic pollution.
WHAT ARE WAYS YOU CAN TAKE ACTION TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Taking action means actively engaging your friends, colleagues or coworkers to raise awareness about plastic pollution.
The first step in that is getting them to make a change and stop using microbeads. We think that microbeads are a great way to get consumers to understand how their choices affect plastic pollution in our oceans.
You will be surprised to realize how many people still don’t know about microbeads and plastic pollution. Or if they do, they may feel powerless to do anything about it.
You can change that!
Microbead Mailback
One of the biggest aspects of this campaign is a Microbead Mailback Drive. Once you educate people to stop using microbeads, encourage them to get rid of their microbead products. Marcus will use them in future artwork that help tell the story of microbeads (and plastic). This will raise awareness and keep microbeads out of our waterways.
If your community has already gone #beadfree, pass around a Pledge Sheet and send it to us so we can show that we will not support corporations that put profit over the well-being of people and our environment.
What else can i do?
After you sign up for the campaign you will receive 5 Gyres’ Action Campaign Kit and your first few campaign tools.
You will also receive new tools as well as invitations to our exclusive webinars and trainings for Action Leaders.
The Campaign Kit will help you to take the following actions:
Tabling
Presentations
Host a “Make your own scrub” party
Organize a Microbead-Product collection drive
Educate your Social Media followers
Organize a School or Community Ban
5 Gyres has passionately worked to document plastic pollution. Microbeads are a great illustration of poor product design that we can do something about. Thanks to your support, a US ban on microbeads in personal care products will go into effect in 2018. Until then, microbead-filled products will still be sold in the US.
What can we do about all those trillions of beads that will still go down US drains? Will manufacturers remove microbeads in all the other countries they sell these products in, or do we need international bans? What will it take to get rid of other poorly designed, single use plastic products that are polluting our waterways?
INCENTIVES
To make it a bit fun, we will award gift packs throughout the month of June to those who send in the most tubes of used scrubs, and several other actions. Gift packs will include swag from some of our supporting partners like Klean Kanteen and some unique 5 Gyres awards like a 30 minute Skype call with Anna. We are still working on more ideas to make this fun and we look forward to discussing it on our first teleconference with you.
