The African National Congress (ANC) is the Republic of South Africa's governing social democratic political party. It has been the ruling party of post-apartheid South Africa on the national level since 1994, including the election of Nelson Mandela as president from 1994-1999. In the 2004 general election the ANC won 69.7% of the votes, in the 2009 general election it won 65.9% of the votes, and in 2014 it won 62.15% of the votes.
The ANC defines itself as a "disciplined force of the left", and it has been supported by the Tripartite Alliance with the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and the South African Communist Party (SACP), since the establishment of a non-racial democracy in April 1994.
Members founded the organisation as the South African Native National Congress (SANNC) on 8 January 1912 at the Waaihoek Wesleyan Church in Bloemfontein to work for the rights of the black South African population. John Dube, its first president, and poet and author Sol Plaatje were among its founding members. The organisation became the ANC in 1923 and formed a military wing, the Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation) in 1961.
2017 (MMXVII) will be a common year starting on Sunday (dominical letter A) of the Gregorian calendar, the 2017th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 17th year of the 3rd millennium, the 17th year of the 21st century, and the 8th year of the 2010s decade.
The Blue Eagles are the helicopter aerobatic team of the British Army Air Corps. It is one of only six professional helicopter teams in the world, along with: Royal Navy Black Cats; Sarang of the Indian Air Force; Scorpion aerobatic team of the Polish Air Force; Rotores de Portugal and the Patrulla Aspa of the Spanish Air Force. They were formed in the spring of 1968 by instructors at the British Army Air Corps. They were established the following years with five helicopters. In 2001, the team included the first British female military display pilot.
The Blue Eagles were formed in the spring of 1968 by instructors at the British Army Air Corps centred at Middle Wallop who practised in their spare time. One year later the team was permanently established with five Bell-47G3B1 Sioux helicopters. Despite no official formation flying training from the army, the team achieved growing success and by 1974 they were including venues as far apart as the Channel Islands, Scotland and Germany. Nonetheless, the Army could not afford to maintain the Blue Eagles on a full-time basis and the team disbanded. Enthusiastic pilots at Middle Wallop were left to continue the team on their own time, and they kept the team and expertise alive. The team performed under a variety of names including the Eagles, Army Eagles, and Sparrow-hawks.
Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa (born 17 November 1952) is a South African politician, businessman, activist, and trade union leader who has served as the Deputy President under President Jacob Zuma since 2014. He was elected as Deputy President of the African National Congress (ANC) at the ANC National Conference in Mangaung in December 2012. He is also the Chairman of the National Planning Commission, which is responsible for strategic planning for the country
Respected as a skillful negotiator and strategist, Ramaphosa built up the biggest and most powerful trade union in South Africa—the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM)—and played a crucial role, with Roelf Meyer of the National Party, during the negotiations to bring about a peaceful end to apartheid and steer the country towards its first democratic elections in April 1994.
He has been criticised, however, for his business interests, which include a seat on the board of Lonmin. On 15 August 2012 he called for action against the Marikana miners' strike, which he called "dastardly criminal" conduct.
Gwede Mantashe (born 21 June 1955,Cala) is a South African politician, who currently serves as the Secretary General of the African National Congress. He is also a former chairperson of the South African Communist Party.
Born in 1955 in Cala in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, Mantashe was the Secretary-General of the National Union of Mineworkers until their 12th National Conference held in May 2006 where he was succeeded by Frans Baleni. He made history by becoming the first trade unionist to be appointed to the board of Directors of a JSE Limited-listed company, namely Samancor, in 1995.
He served for two years as Chairperson of the Technical Working Group of the Joint Initiative for Priority Skills Acquisition (Jipsa).
He was the chairperson of the South African Communist Party until July 2012,. He is currently a member of the Politburo of the South African Communist Party. He was elected Secretary-General of the African National Congress at the party's 52nd national conference in 2007.

What a disgrace - Rebel MP of the ruling African National Congress, Mervyn Dirks, may face disciplinary proceedings after several of his colleagues from both his party and opposition parties reported him threatening a female colleague sitting near him and attempting to assault her. A scuffle could be seen in the ANC back benches during the last National Assembly sitting of 2017, leading to opposition MPs calling for Dirks to be booted. ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu confirmed that ANC MPs reported they were threatened during the scuffle. "House chair, serious allegations have been made against a member of this House by members of this House and we have indeed escalated these allegations to the head of the House, the Speaker," Mthembu said. "Threats and gestures of assaults have been ...

The much awaited event continues to dominate headlines, with all nine provinces have just completed their provincial general councils. While Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Cyril Ramaphosa have emerged as front runners, a lot will depend on what transpires during the Conference. A few weeks ago, outgoing President Jacob Zuma met those running for the party's top post. He said..."I was worried about the Conference-which is being looked at seriously not just by the ANC, but also by the world. The ANC is one of the big organisations in the world, whatever it does people look at it". Tonight Question Time continues its analysis of the ANC's fiercely-contested event. For more news, visit...

With close to a month left to the much-anticipated African National Congress Elective Conference in December, the spotlight is on the governing party's branches. The branches are expected to have completed nominations for the party leadership by tomorrow. KwaZulu-Natal is under scrutiny, having been the biggest province by numbers to the ANC's past Elective Conferences. Its numbers seem to be dwindling though. It had 300 more delegates over the second province in Mangaung in 2012. In December it will be sending a paltry 134 more delegates than second-placed Mpumalanga Province. The current provincial leadership's appeal against the Pietermaritzburg High Court Ruling on the 2015 Provincial Conference, has pitted comrades against others. The so-called rebels filed an interdict against the a...

Another attempt to unseat Jacob Zuma fails. And this time MPs could vote anonymously. Zuma's critics considered this the best chance yet for members of his own African National Congress party to dare vote against him. But the majority of MP's stayed loyal. And despite divisions within the ANC, members chose to stick with an increasingly unpopular president. But was this a missed opportunity - and has the party put itself ahead of the country? I know the drill
You got your ball and chain
It holds you down, the circle round
This story stays the same
It won't be long
And then your heart is frozen
The time has come to break away
You've got it all
What makes you hesitate?
Don't just wait for things
To blow up in your pretty face
Lift the weight
Try not to let it slip away
And you may find yourself again
I feel people just don't know you like I do
Why you're making it so hard to see
When there's something wrong
It goes on and on
I know the drill
You've got your ball and chain
I found out the second round
That some things never change
Open my eyes
And let the days come over me
And maybe it will go away
I feel people just don't know you like I do
Why you're making it so hard to see
When there's something wrong
It goes on and on
You'll see not everybody's here
To break your heart
So there is a price to pay
To be someone you're not
I know the drill
You've got your ball and chain
I found out the second round
That some things never change
Open my eyes
And let the days come over me
