The Church Hill Townhomes is a 35-unit affordable housing complex which provides attractive and dignified living opportunities for low-income families in Fortuna, CA. The average one-bedroom unit has 544 square feet, the average two-bedroom unit has approximately 892 square feet, the average three-bedroom unit has 1,088 square feet, and the average four-bedroom unit has 1,286 square feet.
This complex was designed to echo the existing surrounding single-family community and create a place for active people of all ages. The buildings are situated around a central open space with recreational opportunities for children and their parents. This courtyard design creates a comfortable microclimate with protection from the prevailing winds while taking advantage of the area's plentiful sunshine. During site planning, the buildings were situated to allow for semi-private garden beds in the front yards and private backyards.
The community building is located at the community entrance to facilitate marketing, drop-offs for after school care, and to create a sense of entrance to the new community. The manager’s unit is found above the community building to ensure that the most responsible party is easily found and is able to observe and maintain safety and appropriate behavior standards in the common areas.
