IEEE-SA Fosters and Grows the Benefits of Standards in East Africa
The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA), led by IEEE Board of Governors member Glenn Parsons and India office Director of Standards and Technology Sri Chandra, conducted an extensive follow-up outreach program in East Africa in October, visiting Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya. Highlights of this trip included the official signing ceremony for adoption and general cooperation agreements with the Rwanda Standards Board and the presentation of a breakfast workshop in both Kenya and Uganda entitled, “From Internet Connectivity to Renewable Energy—Technology Solutions for Big Challenges.”
Additional activities included meeting with key regulators, as well as their national standards bodies, and a standards education workshop offered at Strathmore University in Kenya focused on renewable energy. Through these and other meetings, IEEE-SA continues to foster and grow the interest in IEEE standards and the benefits they can bring to the Africa region.
IEEE-SA and KEA Hold Joint Workshop
For the second year in a row IEEE-SA teamed with Korea Electronics Association (KEA) to present a joint workshop at Korea Electronics Show (KES). As a leading global standards development organization (SDO), IEEE-SA provides an open platform to global stakeholders to develop market-oriented standards, and Korea is a global leader in ICT technology that IEEE helps standardize.
Jon Rosdahl, IEEE 802.11™ First Vice Chair and IEEE 802® Executive Committee member, provided an update on the most recent interactions between IEEE and other SDOs on 5G standards, particularly on how they cooperate. Over 50 attendees from Korea learned how 5G standards efforts are building guidance on the future use of unlicensed spectrum. Walter Sun, IEEE-SA Global Strategy Manager, said, "We hope the information provided at KES will be valuable in helping companies refine their business strategies and fine-tune their R&D plans."
