James Gurney is the bestselling author of Dinotopia, Color and Light, and Imaginative Realism, as well as author of the blog GurneyJourney.blogspot.com.

Painting portraits from life takes on a new intensity when your subjects are in their natural environment and when they’re talking and moving. In this unique video workshop, James Gurney brings you along as he sets out to paint people in four dynamic situations: fairgoers in a lunch line, a historical re-enactor in an outdoor museum, a farmer in a barn, and a gathering of Sacred Harp singers.Gurney uses colored pencils, watercolor, gouache, casein, and oil. Each image develops from the first sketch to the final painting, with closeups of palette and brushstrokes juxtaposed with shots of the moving model. You’ll hear and see the subjects talking and singing, alternating with Gurney’s practical and reassuring voiceover explaining the thinking behind the technique.

Portraits in the Wild: Painting People in Real Settings
Join James Gurney for front row seats as he paints on location in gouache, or opaque watercolor.

Gurney portrays six different subjects, with each episode focusing on a different approach to the medium. The subjects include a neon sign, a snowy landscape at dusk, a convenience store, a swamp, some antique character toys, and a Formula 1 race car. Some of the studies are precise and controlled, and others are bold and painterly.

Gouache is a time-honored and versatile medium, a favorite with both professionals and beginning painters because of its portability, opacity and suitability for fine detail. But it also presents its own unique challenges, so Gurney includes plenty of practical painting tips and background information about materials and formulations. For example, painting in black and white is a good way to get accustomed to the medium—or to paint in tight quarters, such as a concert hall or a restaurant.

The edit is brisk and entertaining without sacrificing any of the informational content. This is a high-definition download, which you can own and watch again and again.

WHY I MADE THIS VIDEO
I was a fanatic for sketching even when I was a kid—I even got chased by a bull I that was trying to sketch when I was 10 years old! But I didn't grow up around artists, so I had to figure out everything for myself by reading books and experimenting. When I made it to art school, they didn't teach this stuff, so l learned by teaching. I wrote my first book on the subject, called The Artist's Guide to Sketching when I was just 21 years old. Later on, as I went on to write Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time and Color and Light, I have found that sketching is more vital than ever to my art life and my free time fun, too. I made this video to share all that with you.

Practical, inspiring, and entertaining, it's one of those rare art videos you'll want to watch again and again.

WHY I MADE THIS VIDEO

This is the stuff I wish they had taught in the art school I went to. It's information I've picked up by reading, experimentation, experience, and from my art colleagues.
