Spectrum Grand Master James Gurney takes his easel to the streets in this unique project to create two imaginative paintings entirely on location. In the first, he transforms a townscape with magical lighting. In the second, he invents a dramatic scenario with a giant robot in a fast-food urbanscape. Gurney documents each image all the way from the first sketch to the final painting, using a practical but entertaining “driver’s seat” perspective. You’ll learn how to:• Sketch thumbnails and comprehensives.• Build a flexible maquette from craft foam.• Get maximum inspiration from the location.• Recognize when an idea isn’t working and how to fix it.• Create a viewing grid for an accurate line drawing.• Imply a backstory with selective details.“Fascinating look into a master illustrator's creative and technical process.”—John-Paul Balmet, Concept Artist, LucasfilmHD 720p MP4 Video download, about 1 Gig
Join James Gurney for front row seats as he paints on location in gouache, or opaque watercolor.
Gurney portrays six different subjects, with each episode focusing on a different approach to the medium. The subjects include a neon sign, a snowy landscape at dusk, a convenience store, a swamp, some antique character toys, and a Formula 1 race car. Some of the studies are precise and controlled, and others are bold and painterly.
Gouache is a time-honored and versatile medium, a favorite with both professionals and beginning painters because of its portability, opacity and suitability for fine detail. But it also presents its own unique challenges, so Gurney includes plenty of practical painting tips and background information about materials and formulations. For example, painting in black and white is a good way to get accustomed to the medium—or to paint in tight quarters, such as a concert hall or a restaurant.
The edit is brisk and entertaining without sacrificing any of the informational content. This is a high-definition download, which you can own and watch again and again.

WHY I MADE THIS VIDEO
I was a fanatic for sketching even when I was a kid—I even got chased by a bull I that was trying to sketch when I was 10 years old! But I didn't grow up around artists, so I had to figure out everything for myself by reading books and experimenting. When I made it to art school, they didn't teach this stuff, so l learned by teaching. I wrote my first book on the subject, called The Artist's Guide to Sketching when I was just 21 years old. Later on, as I went on to write Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time and Color and Light, I have found that sketching is more vital than ever to my art life and my free time fun, too. I made this video to share all that with you.
Practical, inspiring, and entertaining, it's one of those rare art videos you'll want to watch again and again.
