Highlights
The Report on the Strategic Review of Food Security and Nutrition in Bangladesh was launched this month. The report praises the country’s tremendous gains in becoming overall food self-sufficient and in reducing the proportion of stunted children. It provides strategic recommendations on major actions needed to reduce the remaining high numbers of people that continue to face food-insecurity (estimated to number 40 million people – a quarter of the population).
The quest of the last 15 years to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) taught us that Global Goals can motivate and help sustain leaps in human progress. It also taught us that the specifics matter. In some places, the MDGs became a widely-recognized, consistent and important driver of local progress; in others, the role and impact of the MDGs was more ambiguous. A lot depended on way the MDGs were implemented: if local change agents made them meaningful locally; if local leaders drew on their legitimacy and visibility; if they were employed to solve real-life problems etc.
DHAKA – Some 42,500 people in northwest Bangladesh are to receive financial assistance through a WFP initiative, enabling them to buy food and other necessities they lost when the area was hit by recurrent monsoon floods from August.
Operational Summary
19-23 July: Heavy rains in the main river basins of Bangladesh and upstream catchments of India have caused severe flooding in the north and northeastern parts of Bangladesh affecting 19 districts.
Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) mobilized volunteers to provide immediate assistance, including evacuation services.

A year and a half ago, thousands of desperate Rohingya and Bangladeshi migrants and asylum-seekers were abandoned at sea, shocking and horrifying many around the world. But more than a year later, little has changed.

New Report ‘Transitioning from the MDGs to the SDGs’ Calls for Collaboration to ‘Deliver as One’*
Between 1 January and 30 September 2016, 20,897 children arrived to Italy by sea: 9 out of 10 children arrived unaccompanied (19,001). UASC thus account for some 14% of all sea arrivals in the above period, an increase of around 88% compared to the same period of 2015, when 8% of all those arrived by sea were UASC.
132,043 Sea arrivals Jan-Sep 2016
132,071 Sea arrivals Jan-Sep 2015
Between 1 January and 30 September 2016, 132,043 persons arrived to Italy by sea, compared to 132,071 sea arrivals in the first nine months of 2015. The number of sea arrivals is therefore almost equal to that of last year, indicating that the decrease in arrivals on the Eastern Mediterrnean route has not had a direct impact on arrivals through the Central Mediterranean.
