What Musk and Ramaswamy Don’t Get About Spending

December 28, 2024 at 9:55 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “The duo have cited areas they’d like to target, such as the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Education, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. And they want to take a hard look at foreign aid, defense spending and the inaccurate payments the government sends to Social Security recipients and others.”

“But taking that big a chunk out of federal spending would be a tall order, experts say. Much of the money supports mandatory programs, which must be funded in accordance with existing laws. These include Social Security and Medicare benefits and interest on the federal debt.”

Dean Phillips Was Right About Biden

December 28, 2024 at 9:50 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Dean Phillips has some regrets. Not about his decision to launch a quixotic primary challenge to President Joe Biden. He stands by that move, which alienated him from his party even as it proved prescient after Biden’s disastrous debate with Donald Trump,” Politico reports.

“But in an exit interview… the retiring Minnesota Democrat said he wished he had been more successful at fixing what he says is a deeply broken Congress and that he could have delivered more for his constituents. And he made clear he was leaving Capitol Hill extraordinarily frustrated with his party.”

A Spate of Abandoned Newborns Unsettles Texas

December 28, 2024 at 9:01 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “A quarter century ago, prompted by a spate of abandoned babies in Houston, this state became the first in the country to pass a safe haven law allowing parents to relinquish newborns at designated places — without questions or risk of prosecution. Yet ‘Baby Moses’ surrenders remain rare in Texas, and another series of abandoned infants since spring in the Houston area has prompted much soul-searching.”

Elon Musk Pledges ‘War’ Over H-1B Visa Program

December 28, 2024 at 8:40 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Elon Musk pledged Friday night to go to ‘war’ to defend the H-1B visa program for foreign tech workers, branding some Republican opponents as ‘hateful, unrepentant racists,’” Axios reports.

Said Musk, on X: “Those contemptible fools must be removed from the Republican Party, root and stem.”

“The MAGA-DOGE civil war that erupted over the last 48 hours has now come to a tipping point, with President-elect Trump’s new techno-libertarian coalition of billionaires taking full aim at his traditional base.”

“Trump, who has remained silent thus far on the schism, faces a quickly deepening conflict between his richest and most powerful advisors on one hand, and the people who swept him to office on the other.”

Politico: Republican brawl on immigration erupts as MAGA and tech world clash.

The Progressive Moment in Global Politics Is Over

December 28, 2024 at 8:38 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “This past year showed that the progressive politics that dominated most industrialized countries over the past two decades or more is shifting to the right, fueled by working-class anxieties over the economy and immigration, and growing fatigue with issues from climate change to identity politics.”

“The return of Donald Trump to the White House is the most dramatic and important example—but it is far from the only one.”

“Across Europe, where economic growth has largely stalled, conservatives and populist right-wing parties are making unprecedented gains. Three-quarters of governments in the European Union are either led by a right-of-center party or are ruled by a coalition that includes at least one.”

John Thune’s Delicate Task Under Trump

December 28, 2024 at 8:35 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. John Thune (R-SD) had a little more than three hours to bask in his big victory before Donald Trump dropped an anvil on his head,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“At midday on Nov. 13, Thune’s Republican Senate colleagues elected him majority leader, the triumphant capstone to his decades in public life. Then, just after 3:30 p.m., Trump announced he planned to nominate Matt Gaetz, the polarizing Florida congressman, to be his attorney general—sending GOP senators into a tizzy over the scandal-plagued choice.”

Said Thune: “Well, this is going to be a tough one… You’re just reminded of how challenging the job is going to be.”

Has Russia’s Shadow Fleet Added Sabotage to Its List?

December 28, 2024 at 8:22 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Western officials have long been concerned about Moscow’s so-called shadow fleet, an assemblage of aged tankers created to covertly carry Russian crude oil around the world. Since Russia invaded Ukraine, the worry primarily concerned the use of such off-the-books ships to circumvent Western sanctions and generate revenue to fuel the Kremlin’s war machine,” the New York Times reports.

“But Russia’s shadow fleet may now present a more pressing danger to the West.”

“This week, Finnish commandos boarded an oil tanker that officials suspect had cut through vital underwater cables in the Baltic Sea, including one that carries electricity between Finland and Estonia. The ship, the Eagle S, bears all the hallmarks of vessels belonging to Russia’s shadow fleet, officials said, and had embarked from a Russian port shortly before the cables were cut.”

“If confirmed, it would be the first known instance of a shadow fleet vessel being used to intentionally sabotage critical infrastructure in Europe — and, officials and experts said, a clear escalation by Russia in its conflict with the West.”

Trump Asks Justices to Pause TikTok Ban

December 27, 2024 at 11:08 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President-elect Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court on Friday to pause the potential TikTok ban from going into effect until his administration can pursue a “political resolution” to the issue, the AP reports.

CNN: Trump’s request for a delay in implementing the ban puts him at odds with the Biden administration, which defended the law in its own brief Friday, warning of “grave” national security concerns about TikTok’s continued operation in the U.S.

U.S. to Hit Debt Limit Next Month

December 27, 2024 at 11:07 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Friday she expects the U.S. will officially run up against its borrowing limit in mid- to late-January, starting the clock on a major fiscal challenge facing President-elect Donald Trump in his first months in office,” Politico reports.

New York Times: “The debt limit was suspended in June 2023 after a contentious negotiation over federal spending, work requirements for receiving government benefits and funding for the Internal Revenue Service. That suspension is scheduled to expire on Jan. 2, forcing Treasury to begin using so-called extraordinary measures to allow the federal government to keep paying its bills.”

“Donald Trump’s team is looking at using military bases to detain migrants and military planes to boost deportations, the president-elect’s incoming border czar Tom Homan said,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said Homan: “It’s something that’s certainly on the table. We’re waiting to see what Congress is going to give us for funding.”

“Two top Canadian ministers will meet with members of President-elect Donald Trump’s circle in Florida on Friday about a border security plan that Canada hopes will ward off Mr. Trump’s threats to impose economically damaging tariffs on imports from Canada,” the New York Times reports.

“The meetings will build on a dinner Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had with Mr. Trump at Mar-a-Lago over the Thanksgiving weekend as well as on a recent telephone conversation between members of Mr. Trudeau’s cabinet and Thomas Homan, Mr. Trump’s designated border czar.”

Elderly Student Loan Borrowers Seek Relief

December 27, 2024 at 1:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “In the waning days of the Biden administration, activists are urging the Education Department to discharge the student debt of older borrowers who they say are in no position to repay. They say the department could use a little-known federal statute that considers a person’s ability to pay within a reasonable time and the inability of the government to collect the debt in full.”

“There are 2.8 million federal student loan borrowers aged 62 and older with a total of $121.5 billion in debt, more than 726,300 of them over the age of 71, according to the Education Department.”

December 27, 2024 at 11:50 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “America’s alliances and partnerships under Mr. Biden’s stewardship have been complicated. Key partners have acted counter to the values that Mr. Biden has espoused, notably democracy, rule of law and human rights.”

“In some cases, those countries have undermined the power and standing of the United States in the world.”
