MAGA Is Already Eating Its Own

December 29, 2024 at 7:59 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Krugman: “Like many observers, I expected severe buyers’ regret fairly early in the second Trump administration. After all, many Americans who voted for Trump did so because they believed he would bring down grocery prices. He was never going to be able to deliver on that promise and stopped talking about the subject as soon as the election was over; sooner or later, voters were going to notice.”

“I did not, however, expect a MAGA civil war weeks before Trump had even taken office. But in retrospect I should have seen it coming.”

Trump’s Return Sparks Hope for 2025 Deals Revival

December 29, 2024 at 7:57 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Wall Street is optimistic that a buoyant stock market, declining interest rates and Donald Trump’s lighter-regulation agenda will prompt a dealmaking rebound in 2025. But jitters remain thanks to the president-elect’s unpredictability,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Deal volume has been muted for the past few years following record volumes coming out of the pandemic. While total global deal volume is up roughly 12% in 2024 through Dec. 26 compared with the same period in 2023, the number of transactions is lower and volume remains well below the 2021 high.”

“Dealmakers were encouraged when Trump in December picked Andrew Ferguson, the Republican Federal Trade Commission member, to succeed FTC Chair Lina Khan. Ferguson and Republicans are expected to dismantle Khan’s guidelines that gave the agency new legal powers to try to block deals.”

December 28, 2024 at 9:18 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Four years ago, President Donald Trump denounced TikTok, the Chinese-owned video sharing app, as a threat to America’s national security,” the New York Times reports.

“This week, as Mr. Trump prepares to retake the White House, he called it a ‘unique medium for freedom of expression.’”

Mexico Bets Trump Is Bluffing on Tariffs

December 28, 2024 at 6:04 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The last time Mr. Trump was president, he unleashed a trade war against China that proved beneficial to Mexican industry. Companies that relied on Chinese factories to make goods for the American market shifted production to plants in Mexico to avoid Mr. Trump’s tariffs.”

“That trend, known as “nearshoring,” gained momentum as President Biden extended tariffs on Chinese imports. Soaring shipping prices during the pandemic heightened the pitfalls of relying on factories across oceans. For companies seeking to close the distance between plants in Asia and customers in the United States, Mexico beckoned as an attractive place to manufacture their wares.”

“This is the first time these images have been made public, even though the photo ops and meetings they depict have been known about for years.”

Trump Sides with Elon Musk on Immigration Visas

December 28, 2024 at 2:54 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President-elect Donald Trump told the New York Post he supports immigration visas for highly skilled workers, appearing to side with Elon Musk in the roiling intra-MAGA debate on the issue.

Said Trump: “I’ve always liked the visas, I have always been in favor of the visas. That’s why we have them.”

He added: “I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I’ve been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times. It’s a great program.”

December 28, 2024 at 2:48 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge is signaling that Rudy Giuliani’s contempt hearing next Friday might not end so well for the former New York City mayor and onetime personal lawyer for President-elect Donald Trump as two Georgia election poll workers try to collect a $148 million defamation award they won against him,” the AP reports.

Elon Musk Doubles Down on German Far-Right Party

December 28, 2024 at 2:42 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Elon Musk reiterated his support for the far-right Alternative for Germany party, or AfD, in an opinion piece published by the Welt am Sonntag newspaper less than two months before Germans go to the polls,” Bloomberg reports.

Wrote Musk: “The AfD, even though it is described as far-right, represents a political realism that resonates with many Germans who feel their concerns are ignored by the establishment. It addresses the problems of the day — without the political correctness that often obscures the truth.”

Russia Treating North Korean Troops as ‘Expendable’

December 28, 2024 at 2:40 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

White House National Security communications adviser John Kirby said Russia was treating North Korean troops as “expendable” by sending them on impractical ground operations in its war against Ukraine, The Hill reports.

Said Kirby: “It is clear that Russian and North Korean military leaders are treating these troops as expendable and ordering them on hopeless assaults against Ukrainian defenses.”

Biden Wonders What He Should Have Done Differently

December 28, 2024 at 11:41 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Biden has taken to acknowledging some strategic mistakes, both big and small… Many of his missteps resulted from his determination to restore the age-old rules of the American presidency after Trump’s term, a determination that many of his supporters, in retrospect, consider a politically fatal error.”

“In private, Biden has also said he should have picked someone other than Merrick Garland as attorney general, complaining about the Justice Department’s slowness under Garland in prosecuting Trump.”

Trump Lets Mike Johnson Twist in the Wind

December 28, 2024 at 11:35 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “A week has now passed since Congress cleared a government funding bill that ignored Trump’s central demand of Johnson — a debt ceiling increase. And with just six days until the House votes on the next speaker, Trump has been conspicuously silent on Johnson’s fate.”

“Why does that matter? Because a host of MAGA voices have filled the void to suggest that Johnson isn’t the right leader for the House GOP. It’s not just the debt-ceiling faceplant. It’s also the deal Johnson cut with Democrats (and later withdrew) that sent Elon Musk and many other Trump allies into a rage.”

“So how to interpret Trump’s silence? If Johnson is feeling optimistic, he can lean on the fact that Trump has backed him for months and if he truly wanted a change to House leadership he might have said so at any time. (Or he might have sent another message, like not inviting Johnson on a whirlwind post-election weekend or to his box at the Army-Navy football game earlier this month.)”

Americans Want Famous People to Talk Less About Politics

December 28, 2024 at 11:29 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Cocaine Trafficking Defies Decades of Anti-Drug Efforts

December 28, 2024 at 10:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “For decades, cocaine consumers were primarily Americans, and interdiction was a U.S. government priority. But despite the tens of billions of dollars spent in the U.S. war on drugs in Latin America, the industry has not only grown, it has globalized, with new routes, new markets and new criminal enterprises.”

“Nearly every one of Latin America’s mainland nations has become a major producer or mover of the drug, with Ecuador now one of the most important cocaine transit points in the world. Demand is soaring in Europe, which rivals the United States as the world’s top cocaine destination.”
