Here Comes the Sun

It's been a long cold lonely winter...

Luckily the winter has not been lonely for us, but it has been long and cold. We are now well into summer, but the last week in Queenstown has been a mix of summer and then winter like days.

We have decided to migrate north for a well earnt (even if we do say so ourselves) break. We are travelling to Auckland for a few days and then on to Fiji. Before leaving the damp this week, an hour late due to the weather, we decided to enjoy wine from the Wanaka sub-region. Wanaka, is a stunning 45 minute drive north of Gibbston, across the Crown Range. This is the highest main road in New Zealand and there are stunning views over Gibbston and Wanaka on the way. Lake Wanaka is more open than Lake Whakatipu, the Mountains a little further from the lakeside. The lake moderates the temperature, which is generally a few degrees warmer than the southern end of the Crown Range. Wanaka winemakers might say that this provides for greater depth in flavour, a little more richness in their Pinot Noir. And while that is possible, Wanaka does not currently have the reputation of Bannockburn Pinot.

The wines we enjoyed were from Hawkesbury Estate, a family owned vineyard producing exclusively Pinot Noir from a variety of clones on a 12ha vineyard. The two wines from the same vineyard and winemaker, each expressed terrior a little differently. Both were well made, with good depth. However, despite this they didn't quite have that extra something that would make them memorable, in that manner the wines were a little like our subdued summer. But as we finally board the plane, here comes the sun and it will be all right...

...Or so we thought. As it happened, our little fella managed to pick up a bug that left him in Waitakari hospital for a few nights. A scary time, but luckily he appears to be on the mend. The sun may have to wait, but what is more important is that the wee man it healthy again.

Hawkesbury Estate Ltd, Akitu, A1, Pinot Noir, Central Otago, 2016

This wine is made from high altitude grapes, a long way South, at 44°43' 40". Whilst it is not the most southerly vineyard in Central Otago, it is on the edge. Central Otago is the most southerly commercial wine region in the World.

Brilliant ruby. This is a relatively opaque Pinot Noir. The nose is rich cherry fruit, with mushroom and clove. Pleasant, but not immediately exciting. In the mouth, it is smooth, intense and long. A well made wine that just needs a little more charater.

Hawkesbury Estate Ltd, Akitu, A2, Pinot Noir, Central Otago, 2016

Brilliant ruby. A relatively opaque Pinot. The nose is rich cherry, with a hint of spice and well balanced vanilla. This is an enjoyable wine, but it does not have significant depth. It is excellently integrated and has a velvety smoothness, a long finish and good acidity.

#DestinationFridays, because swimming isn't just for pools. Swim in Lake Wanaka in Wanaka, New Zealand. 45 kilometres long and covering 193 square kilometres, the crystal clear waters of Lake Wanaka are perfect for jetboaters, sailors and kayakers to explore. Wanaka tends to attract more intrepid travelers, people who are looking for adventures and who are keen to get off the tourist trail. Lake Wanaka is picturesque and vividly-framed, with the craggy peaks of the Southern Alps striking a pose in the background. Wanaka Township is popular with both domestic and international tourists, with two major ski fields for winter fun, and a host of wineries and eateries to enjoy during the warmer months. Look out for Red Star Luxury Burgers, Wanaka’s legitimate competitor to Ferg Burger in Queenstown!
