Hikin' wit me kin

On our way up Cypress Mountain on one of the more rugged parts of the Howe Sound Crest Trail to St. Marks Summit. Our nephew, from PEI has joined my son, me bride and me for this breathtaking journey.

The hike is a quasi-challenging 13 KM return trip with a moderate 600m elevation gain that ends at 1340m. I think the only time my nephew has been above these altitudes is in an aircraft.

Visual Conundrum

Standing at Saint Mark's Summit high above Howe Sound. I always have trouble framing a shot as this place is an 180 degree Ooh-Ah spot -- stunning everywhere you look.

The hike is a quasi-challenging 13 KM return trip with a moderate 600m elevation gain that ends at 1340m. They've made some improvements since our last time on this trail, eliminated a couple of the more nasty obstacles. Now if they can scare off the Black Flies.

Cascading Beauty

This form the local gem, Pinecone Burke Provincial Park; a wooded wonderland nestled just above Coquitlam. The 10 KM hike takes you by two waterfalls. This is the Woodland Falls, a.k.a. Lower Sawblade Falls ...not sure it has an official name.

The park is huge, I think I could return weekly into the fall and not hike every trail.

Another day, another climb

Standing at the edge of the Coquitlam Lake View Trail in Pinecone Burke Provincial Park enjoying a peak or two after a long climb. The 13.4 KM round trip had a 620m climb over loose, fist-sized ankle rollers. As much as I loved the view the Ooh-Ah to Effort ratio came up a little short.

Looking over the west end of Coquitlam Island the highest peak is Mount Bishop 1509 m (second from left), about 16 KM away.

Point Atkinson

Perched upon a granite bluff in West Vancouver, BC the Point Atkinson Lighthouse has been alerting ships in Burrard Inlet since 1874. The original wooden structure was replaced by this 18m high concrete one in 1914.
