11 Sep 2018. Blue bonus 😱 Over the past weekend, I drove down to my family’s holiday shack at Tuross Head, Australia, for a bit of a mental health break in the hope of grabbing some more nightscape photos. Friday night was cloudy, so I didn’t get any photos. On Saturday night it started out the same again, but I still spent about an hour and a half driving around looking for somewhere with clearer skies. I struck out, so headed back to the house to read for a while then get another (relatively) early night. 👏🏻👏🙏 A little after 11:15 I decided to have one last, but not hopeful, look outside before going to bed. The clouds were gone! I changed out of my pyjamas and into warm clothes for several hours out in the cold (it’s early Spring here). Knowing that the Milky Way would be past halfway down the southwestern sky, I drove to a spot along the eastern shore of the lake and set up my camera and tripod. What are those lights in the water, I wondered? Could it be…yes! Bioluminescence was making the tiny waves blue, and there were little pools of blue water along the sand left bare by the falling tide. 📷 My photo for today was shot when most of the Milky Way’s core region was in the hazy part of the sky below ten-degrees elevation. The planet Saturn was low in the west (about 1/3 in from the right of the shot), and you can see its reflection coming right across the lake to the sand in the foreground. I enhanced the glow of the bioluminescence by throwing and splashing water that I’d scooped from the shallows. 100,000 Followers- WOW!
I saw that this Collection has passed the 100,000 Follower mark. I wanted to say a big Thank You to y'all!! This is kind of a bit different Collection and I hope you like the type of posts about gear and scenes from behind the camera.
One of the things I hope this Collection does is inspire people to get outside, interact with our natural world and see some of the wonders of the planet.
This image is one from a Nightscape Photography trip ( I actually have a whole Collection of Nightscape images) to a location only an hour from where I live. Very few people know about it and I have never met other photographers here. I think it shows that if you explore around where you live you can find beautiful locations for landscape photos and even places with dark enough sky to see the Milky Way, even if you are less than 60 miles from a city with 8 million people.
I waded down the river in the dark and set up my camera on this rock to photograph the Milky Way and its reflection in the water. The setup you see here is my Gitzo 1348 Tripod with Sony A7S and Samyang 12mm fisheye. This is my favorite night photography combo.

Central Cygnus Skyscape
In cosmic brush strokes of glowing hydrogen gas, this beautiful skyscape unfolds across the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy near the northern end of the Great Rift and the center of the constellation Cygnus the Swan. A 36 panel mosaic of telescopic image data, the scene spans about six degrees. Bright supergiant star Gamma Cygni (Sadr) to the upper left of the image center lies in the foreground of the complex gas and dust clouds and crowded star fields.
Left of Gamma Cygni, shaped like two luminous wings divided by a long dark dust lane is IC 1318 whose popular name is understandably the Butterfly Nebula. The more compact, bright nebula at the lower right is NGC 6888, the Crescent Nebula. Some distance estimates for Gamma Cygni place it at around 1,800 light-years while estimates for IC 1318 and NGC 6888 range from 2,000 to 5,000 light-years.

Adventure!
A nightscape image of my tent set up in the mountains of Great Basin. Under the dark sky of a seldom visited cold desert region I spent a few days exploring and camping last fall. It is my type of adventure- finding places off the beaten path, looking up at the Milky Way and trying to find images to bring home.
Look carefully and see the Andromeda galaxy just above the biggest tree.
Very ready to get back to a place like this!

"The Sky Calls to Us"
In this scene the comet-like Antares / Rho Ophiuchi nebula and associated dark nebulosity appears to fall towards the solitary figure holding a light against the darkness. Upon the lonely rocky outcrop the figure beholds the magnificent Milkyway galaxy as it descends slowly into the west. The red "Cats Paw" and "Lobster" nebula can be seen clearly in the centre of this shot. This image was taken at Nambung National Park, Western Australia.
I used an Skywatcher StarAdventurer sky tracking mount to take this 5 panel mosaic. A Canon EOS6d (modified) was used through a Canon 85mm f/1.2 lens stopped down to f/4.0. All camera and lens settings were kept the same for all panels, and all shots were taken one immediately after the other. The tracking mount was used for the sky and turned off for the foreground panels. Stitching in PTGui, colour balance, noise reduction, saturation and some brightness / contrast adjustment in Photoshop. Details below.
