M42 - Orion Nebula in Narrowband SHO (Hubble Palette)
Here's the color version of the M42 I was working on last week. I really enjoyed processing this image as every channel adds so many details and colors to the final composition. I didn't blow out the core of the nebula, which is the brightest part, because there are so many details there to see.

The Milkyway [core] Season may have ended, but the season of the "anti-core" has commenced. Looking away from the galactic core, the outer galactic plane is no match for the core's brilliant brightness. However, this part of the night sky is filled with the wonderful colours of sweeping nebulas and fantastic deep sky objects. Despite the awesome beauty, this part of the sky is a difficult nightscape challenge. The dimmer sky means the foreground is darker. Wait for moonlight and the colours of the nebulas quickly become washed out. Expose for longer and the stars saturate and panoramas become problematic. Its difficulty has meant that these skies are not commonly found in nightscapes, and why I've titled this image (by no means a good image) - the forgotten skies.
This image was taken at Yenyening Lakes, Western Australia. Upon a small and deceptively dry salt lake (its thick mud hidden under a thin crust of salt) I pose amongst long dead trees that the rise up out of the lake long skeletal fingers. The outer plane of the Milkyway arcs overhead revealing its subtle colours and wonderous deep sky objects. From the left is the California nebula, the Pleiades, then the Orion and Horsehead nebulas embraced in the arms of Barnard's Loop, the Rosette nebula, the Vela supernova remnant, the Carina nebula, and the Coal Sack dark nebula. In the top right is the Large Magellanic Cloud, and the pale green dot in the top left is the comet 46P/Wirtanen. Throughout the sky there are streaks of green and orange/red caused by chemiluminescence of the atmosphere.
I used an Skywatcher StarAdventurer sky tracking mount to take this 40 x panel mosaic. A Canon EOS6d (modified) was used through a Canon 50mm f/1.2 lens stopped down to f/3.2. All camera and lens settings were kept the same for all panels, and all shots were taken one immediately after the other. The tracking mount was used for the sky and turned off for the foreground panels. Stitching in PTGui, colour balance, noise reduction, saturation and some brightness / contrast adjustment in Photoshop. Details below.

The mighty Carina nebula shines like a flower blossom carried by the wind from the branches of a dead tree. The dimmer red nebulas such as the Running Chicken and Liberty nebula are like trailing petals. This image was taken along the shores of Yenyening lake, Western Australia. The dry salt lake is lined with dead trees that have succumbed to the harsh environment, but never the less some life manages to thrive.
Without any moon and with no bright Milkyway core to illuminate the foreground, a heavy amount of noise filtering was required to bring out any detail of the foreground. Perhaps it might've been better to leave the foreground as a silohuette, but its nice to be able to see something of the landscape.
I used an Skywatcher StarAdventurer sky tracking mount to take this 2 x panel mosaic. A Canon EOS6d (modified) was used through a Canon 85mm f/1.2 lens stopped down to f/3.2. All camera and lens settings were kept the same for both panels, and all shots were taken one immediately after the other. The tracking mount was used for the sky and turned off for the foreground panel. Stitching in PTGui, colour balance, noise reduction, saturation and some brightness / contrast adjustment in Photoshop. Details below.

The desolate landscape of Yenyening Lakes, Western Australia lies silent under brillant skies washed with the colours of opal. Looking towards the outer rim of the galaxy, one can behold the fantastic array of nebulas, supernova renmants, clusters, and satellite galaxies. And amongst it all, the faint ripples of air glow add green and orange to the red of the nebulas and the deep blues of the night sky.
Of course, most of these colours are not apparent to the naked eye. Only the integrating sensor of a camera and some skill at post-processing can bring out these subtle shades and hues. Despite this, when one walks along upon the dry salt lake and looks up to stare into the heavens, one cannot but feel a sense of peace, wonder, and something else that evades description.
I used an Skywatcher StarAdventurer sky tracking mount to take this massive 49 panel mosaic. A Canon EOS6d (modified) was used through a Canon 50mm f/1.2 lens stopped down to f/3.2. All camera and lens settings were kept the same for all panels, and all shots were taken one immediately after the other. The tracking mount was used for the sky and turned off for the foreground panels. Stitching in PTGui, colour balance, noise reduction, saturation and some brightness / contrast adjustment in Photoshop. Details below.

Original Work "Orion Hunts Beyond Far Horizon"
Taken from near Cervantes, Western Australia, the Orion constellation now sets on western horzion early at night. Taken with a 50mm lens, the constellation fits nicely in its field of view, if somewhat over exposed. Clearly visible is the Orion nebula, but if you zoom up on the belt (the three stars making a near vertical line in the centre) one can just see the orange smudge of the flame nebula, and just next to it the even fainter red veil of the dark horsehead nebula (not realy visible). If one really knows what to look for, there is even the faintest hint of Barnard's Loop, a red nebula that arcs in this photo over the entire constellation.
The image is a composite of two shots, the first at ISO2500 for 57sec at f1.8 for the sky, and the second at ISO3200 for 30sec at f2 (yeh - I got the ISO reversed, silly me).

This pan video gives a close-up look at a new image of the strikingly colorful emission nebula, called LHA 120-N55 from ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT). 13 Nov 2018. Orion in the East 🧭 Today's photo shows how the constellation of Orion looks as it rises in the east down here in the Southern Hemisphere. Even on your phone’s screen, you should be able to make out the hazy purplish area that is the Orion Nebula, also known as M42. It’s about 1/4 down from the top edge of my shot and a little left of the centreline. The nebula is visible with the naked eye in dark skies, and even in some areas with a moderate amount of light pollution. With a diameter of around 24 light-years, this beautiful object has been observed to be a star-forming region, and at 1340-odd light-years from Earth, it is the closest such “stellar nursery” yet seen. ☀️✨🌟 Further left and just below halfway down the frame you can see the orange “supergiant” star Betelgeuse. Why the designation of “supergiant”? Based on astronomical observations, Betelgeuse is so massive that if it was placed in the centre of our Solar System, its outer surface would be found near Jupiter. Yeah, that's big! 💡 The red lights marking the locations of wind turbines add some extra colour to the photo.
