Starry Skies and Milky Way over the Grand Canyon

In our previous post on #InstaEconomics, we were talking about #PublicGoods
Today, we will ask you a simple question.
Are parks considered to be public goods?
Well the answer here is that - it depends.
We have to 'define' specifically which park we are talking about.
Consider Choa Chu Kang Park, a small park in the neighbourhood of Choa Chu Kang (obviously.)
Can it be excludable? Yes. You can put barriers around the park and prevent entry, if you wanted!
Would it be rivalrous? Yes. In a small park like this, if there are too many people in the park would it destroy your romantic ambience for dating or a nice evening walk? That would diminish the quality of consumption.
Thus we would say Choa Chu Kang Park is NOT a public good.
Let's consider the case of Grand Canyon National Park! #grandcanyon
It is NON-EXCLUDABLE. Why? Well Grand Canyon National Park is 4,926 km² and is HUGE. It would be prohibitively expensive to (erect any form of barrier) to exclude any specific group of people from consumption.
It is also NON-RIVALROUS. With such a huge size, it is hard to imagine that the consumption by one additional user would deprive/diminish somebody else of consumption.
Thus, Grand Canyon National Park is said to be a PUBLIC GOOD.
Cool right, the definition matters ;)
