For such serious decisions like a ban, you need proof, according to #ArneSchoenbohm, the head of Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). He said they couldn't find any evidence, even after examining products and its lab in the German city of Bonn.

Spy chiefs from the #FiveEyes nations had come to a secure resort in coastal #NovaScotia for an informal evening after intense talks in nearby Ottawa. In the months that followed that July 17 dinner, an unprecedented campaign has been waged by those present - #Australia, the #US, #Canada, #NewZealand and the #UK - to block Chinese tech giant #Huawei from supplying equipment for their next-generation wireless networks.

This increasingly muscular posture towards Beijing culminated in last week’s arrest of Huawei’s CFO, #MengWanzhou, in Vancouver, over alleged breaches of US sanctions with Iran. Meng, the daughter of the Huawei’s founder #RenZhengfei, was granted bail on Wednesday (Dec 12) ahead of efforts to extradite her to the US. This coming in from the cold was viewed as a countermeasure to #China and its many proxies, who have long argued fears over its rising power and influence were a fiction, or worse still, signs of xenophobia.

#Huawei, with many partners around the world, has a great reputation globally. It has publicly stated, on many occasions, that its global operations are in strict compliance with local laws and regulations. Nevertheless, members of the #FiveEyes countries - the United States, #Britain, #Australia, #NewZealand and Canada - have accused Huawei of threatening their #nationalsecurity while providing no evidence. With such speculation, they have sown fear and misled people.

If Huawei’s #telecomequipment poses a security risk, so do the devices produced by Western telecom equipment manufacturers, since they use the same science and technology. 'Kill the chickens, scare the monkey'. This week, #Canada learned it is the chicken in the Chinese proverb. #China has taken not just one but two Canadian citizens "hostage", in the words of one experienced China watcher, the Lowy Institute's Richard McGregor. Mr McGregor said this was a reprisal for the arrest of #MengWanzhou, a powerful #Huawei executive recently detained in Canada, pending extradition to the #US.

Former Canadian ambassador to China, Guy Saint-Jacques believes Beijing wants to send a clear message to the #UnitedStates. In 2014, as Canada's ambassador in Beijing, Mr Saint-Jacques had to deal with an almost identical situation to the Mr Kovrig arrest. A Chinese national, Su Bin, was arrested in Canada on a US warrant accusing him of spying, so the Chinese arrested a Canadian missionary couple, Kevin and Julia Garratt, in response.

Remember when we used to learn that the US spread lessons of Freedom and Democracy throughout the Free World?  Now we are famous for spreading the technology and culture of the surveillance state throughout the anglophone nations.

Note that the Five Eyes treaty nations are all Anglophone nations.  Other than NZ, they are the aggressive Anglophone allies in WWII.  US, UK, Australia, Canada.  Little NZ is pretty traditionally pacifist, and oddly although a member of the sigint treaty, doesn't share extradition treaties and other key relationships with their spy partners.  Strange bedfellows for the Kiwis...  Wonder how they're feeling about it right now?
