The #EuropeanUnion is urging its leaders to take a tougher stand on mounting #China -related trade, technology and geostrategic concerns, a major step that could overshadow the country’s relations with #Europe for years to come. Following Washington’s lead, the #EuropeanCommission, the #EU’s executive, released a paper on Tuesday (Mar 12) which for the first time labelled China an 'economic competitor' and 'a systemic rival promoting alternative models of governance'.
The call comes just over a week before Chinese President #XiJinping’s planned visit to #Italy and #France and ahead of the annual China-EU summit in Brussels on April 9 that Chinese Premier #LiKeqiang will co-chair. In Beijing on Wednesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang acknowledged competition existed with the EU, but termed it healthy in nature.

Chinese Premier #LiKeqiang has offered an olive branch to the #EuropeanUnion by saying Beijing will not undermine the bloc’s interests if it reaches a #tradedeal with the #UnitedStates. The #EU, China’s largest trading partner, released a paper on Tuesday which for the first time labelled China an 'economic competitor' and 'a systemic rival promoting alternative models of governance'.
Li admitted that there were frictions between #China and the EU but called for deepening of mutual trust to solve the new issues, adding: 'We are now discussing an investment agreement that’s reciprocal and fair to both sides.' China has been pushing Brussels to join it to defend #freetrade and a multilateral approach against increasing US protectionism, but the EU is worried that Beijing might drop this as the price of doing a deal to end the #tradewar with the #US. The bloc is also concerned that China might strike a deal that involves it agreeing to buy more goods from the US without addressing issues such as 'unfair' state subsidies for industry or giving greater market access to foreign firms

The #Portugueseeconomy, bailed out by the #EuropeanUnion eight years ago, is booming. It is enjoying its highest economic growth in nearly two decades, fueled by record tourism, an upswing in the housing market, a growing tech sector and strong exports. Private investment has returned to 2009 levels, helped by foreign investors including #Chinesecompanies.
But for every glitzy new hotel and fancy restaurant in Lisbon there is a creaking bit of infrastructure. And with total debt close to 120% of #GDP, one of #Europe’s highest, the ruling Socialists have limited room to finance a big investment drive without putting almost a decade of budget repair at risk. A recent report by the IMF found #Portugal actually had net public investment of about negative 1.2% of GDP in 2016, putting it at the bottom of a list of 26 rich countries, including #Greece, #Italy and #Spain. That means it is not spending enough to offset the depreciation of state assets.
