Zion Narrows

Deep in the Narrows of the Virgin River in Zion National Park. You wade the river in a canyon that is over 1000' (300m) deep. When the light is right mid day these walls bounce light and glow. Here it is still not the right time and the walls are shadowy. Ready to get back here and wade the river again.

Winter in the Zion Narrows

I was in Zion National Park this last week and waded the Narrows in winter. Yes, that is snow on the rock. I drove through snow on the way into the park, there was also icy trails and hanging on the walls of the canyon. I got a chance to see the park in winter and get some nice images. I even photographed the Milky Way a few minutes each morning before sunrise.

The Narrows is a hike you wade the river. Water temp was 41 (3c) degrees. Air temp was 27 (-2c) when I entered the canyon. I had rented dry pants and canyon boots. I stayed warm in the water.

Here is one of the photos I sat up. I am using my Sony A7R on my Gitzo 1641T tripod.

An amazing experience in winter. I spent about seven hours in the canyon and it was a spectacular day. More images to come in the following weeks.

Driving into Zion: Utah's Zion National Park has some grand vistas that will leave you in awe. One of these views is the drive on Hwy 9 going out of The Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel. It is one of those spots that make you want to stop and just take it all in. I've attempted to capture some of the grandeur in this photo, but it's a drive you need to experience in person to really get the full impact of this awesome canyon.

Old Cottonwood in Zion: On autumn 2017 tour we made a stop in Zion National Park seeking fall colors. I was surprised to find the cottonwood trees decked in beautiful yellows that brought to mind the colors of aspen trees. My opinion of cottonwood trees usually isn't very high, but the show they put on in Zion and other parts of Utah raised it a bit.

Kolob Canyons at Utah’s Zion National Park: Located outside the main portion of Zion National Park, Kolob Canyons is beautiful and well worth the side trip. This area has an amazing array of high cliffs and deep valleys, providing many scenic areas to enjoy by driving through or by taking any of the several hiking trails. On our first visit to Zion we missed this treasure. So we were very pleased to find this niche in Zion National Park on our October 2017 road trip.
