Transformation of a log
Fungus, unknown species
Svartskog, Norway
What we see as a mushroom with a stalk and a cap is the fleeting moment when the various species of fungi are busy dispersing their spores. Shortly these two beautiful specimens will vanish, but inside the log this, and likely several other fungi species, will continue to transform and decompose the log. A forest without fungi would be very bleak compared to what we see in a healthy and undisturbed forest, as they are the transformers of nutrients.
Many species of fungi remain hidden to us for years if the conditions are not right for reproduction and spore growth, but they are still hard at work supporting trees and plants throughout the forests. Some summers are so dry that when the autumn arrives there are hardly any mushrooms to be seen, and I have experienced autumns where I have hardly seen any fly agaric which is the most eye catching of all.
The autumn of 2017 was an exceptional year in that regard, and the summer must have been the best in many many years for the majority of fungi species as I have never seen so many exceptional species and numbers here. And I have lived here for 30 years!
As with most of the species I have posted from 2017 this was found in the forest up the hills behind my home. Yet another great example of how amazing things are just where you are if you care to look.

Not a champignon
False deathcap (Amanita citrina)
Svartskog, Norway
Several species of fungi to behold in the forest around my home now, and in particular this one has popped up in great numbers.
When this species is fresh out of the ground it looks deliciously like a champingon, but is most definitely not. It is not advisable to pick it as it is similar to the very poisonous death cap, and you do not want to take any chances when it comes to mushrooms!
Sometimes it is sufficient to simply admire what is growing in the forest and let it be undisturbed. In fact I really enjoy coming back to the same mushrooms the next day or even later in the same day to see how much they have grown.

Went out today in the local Botanic Gardens, was planning on heading up the mountains for the day but that didn't happen for various reasons so another day, Managed to find a pair of large shrooms today but couldn't get close to them as they were quite far in the garden bed so no lighting on them, I'll keep them for another time as I've still got one from last week that was quite deserving of a showing. This shot is a two light set up one light to the right in a softbox with the power low to add in some front side fill light and the other the left rear on a lot stronger power to give the backlight effect. So this ones from last week and I'll keep this weeks shot for a day when I have no success.
As always best viewed large.

Mushrooms on a fallen tree.
I photographed this in Söderåsen National Park in the south of Sweden. I used a Sony α7 II (ILCE-7M2) and a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 manual lens. Lit using a Godox TT685S through a diffuser. Developed using +RawTherapee.

I'm not sure what kind of mushroom this is... but I found it in the Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge off of Freeland Rd. I ran out of waterfalls to shoot because the streams are too full of water... so went searching for other subjects. This one did very nicely... and I'm glad I kept my macro lens in my bag on this adventure.
Happy "almost the weekend" to all :)
