Donald #Trump issued the first veto of his presidency Friday afternoon (Mar 15), rejecting a congressional resolution that would have blocked him from funding his border wall without congressional approval. The president's veto comes a day after 12 Republicans joined Senate Democrats to rebuke the president’s decision to declare a #nationalemergency last month in order to redirect funds to build a wall on the southern border.
The resolution was a stunning bipartisan rebuke to Trump, but lawmakers currently do not have the votes to overturn his veto. In a rare bipartisan show of unity, the House voted in support of a resolution to demand that the Department of Justice release the full findings of #RobertMueller’s report to the public. The resolution is technically nonbinding, so the DOJ does not have to abide by the recommendation, but lawmakers expressed full support for the report’s release in a stunning 420-0 vote.

In the past 2 years there have been a number of high profile incidents involving #whitenationalists, perhaps most notably the Unite the Right march in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017. One woman was killed and 19 were injured when a speeding car slammed into a throng of counter-protesters. Last year's shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh claimed the lives of 11 people. Federal prosecutors charged the gunman, an avowed #whitenationalist, with hate crimes. In February, authorities arrested a Coast Guard lieutenant, an alleged #whitesupremacist, who was planning an attack on several television anchors and elected officials.
The data suggests these are all part of a broader rise in #whitenationalism across the US. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), an organization focused on tracking extremist activity, found last year that white supremacist murders in the US 'more than doubled in 2017,' with #farrightextremist groups and #whitesupremacists' responsible for 59% of all extremist-related fatalities in the U.S. in 2017.' Republican Senator #RandPaul of Kentucky said he’ll vote to block President Donald #Trump’s declaration of a #nationalemergency on the U.S.-Mexico border, a move that’s likely to provide enough votes for the measure to pass the Senate and draw Trump’s first veto. The House voted Feb. 26 to block the #emergencydeclaration, but without enough votes to override a promised presidential veto. Only 13 Republicans joined all Democrats in backing the measure. The Senate has 18 calendar days from that date to consider the House measure or act on its own version.
