Late night comedians celebrated the #UnitedNations audience of world leaders laughing at the United States and President #Trump during their monologues on Tuesday (Sept 25) night. Trump listed domestic economic accomplishments during a speech to the General Assembly on Tuesday, saying his administration had done more than almost any other, then U.N. spectators chuckled in response. He downplayed the laughter. 'I didn’t expect that reaction but that’s OK,' he said. While late-night hosts mock Trump on a regular basis, they seemed to take additional pleasure in the president being laughed at by foreign leaders.

At the current #UNGA session, held in New York, the #US president’s boastful claims that his administration is the most accomplished in the history of #America provoked laughter. Keeping it low yet audible, the world leaders laughed at him. Startled and rattled, as he appeared on the world podium, #Trump tried to laugh away the derisive response, and, this time, the notables laughed with him. Later on, Trump explained that they were laughing with him. At him or with him, the world was laughing. Trump was, for sure, overplaying his hand by putting forward the ' #isolationist vision' at an international forum like the #UN.

The laughter reflected many trends and shifts in the behavior of the world leaders towards the US. The most conspicuous is that the world is uniting against Trump’s isolationist vision as the US departs from the global commitments and engagements. The states are moving ahead with their national agendas without abandoning the slogans of #globalization and #internationalism.

US President Donald #Trump’s remarkable speech to the #UnitedNations this week was supposed to restate the new order #America has for the world. And all he got was a laugh. But it was an important speech, spelling out more clearly what everyone has known since January 2017 - his administration is dismantling what America has stood for since the second world war. Out goes the vision of a liberal rules-based stable world under #US leadership. What everyone heard is that the White House does not care much about allies or enemies, only what is good for the United States.

It does seem strange that American innovation, entrepreneurship and dynamism, which drew continuously on new talent, first from Europe and then the rest of the world, is now walling up its borders physically, legally and mentally. There are 40 million immigrants in the US today, representing 13% of the US population. Immigrants founded nearly one-fifth of the Fortune 500 companies, such as Google, Procter & Gamble, Kraft, Colgate Palmolive, Pfizer and eBay. Today, much of Silicon Valley feels like working in the UN: diverse, noisy and creative.

It was a laugh that was heard around the world. It was also a laugh that the world - or at least its leaders - had at the expense of President #Trump. Beginning his speech at the #UnitedNations General Assembly this week, Trump didn't appear to expect the humorous interlude as he launched into a recital of his achievements in office to date. The response was clear: The President screwed up. Worse, his fragile ego was under attack.

Once caught in Trump's ire, world leaders find it hard to shake - just ask #Canada's #JustinTrudeau and #Germany's #AngelaMerkel. After Trump stormed out early from the fractious #G7 summit in Canada this summer, he accused Trudeau of being 'dishonest.' Those who know they laughed at Trump at the #UNGA might also want to reflect on the fate of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel. During her first meeting with Trump at the White House, he refused to shake her hand. The lesson for UN delegates who may have laughed is this: Hope you don't get found out. President Trump likes respect. He won't forget. And he may get the last laugh.

The ridiculing of a #US president in the world’s foremost forum marks a dangerous turn in world affairs. It undermines #America’s stature as leader of the free world and injects anarchy in it stead. It portends a time of crisis when Israel will be in desperate need of U.S. diplomatic support, which will no longer be effective. It creates an environment in which countries will grow ever bolder in bucking Washington and going it alone, on #Israel as well as many other issues.

One cannot claim to love or admire the #UnitedStates without realizing the inherent dangers of a U.S. president who holds no moral authority, is laughed out of the court of world public opinion and is cheered by his sycophants alone. In the long run, such a world threatens Israel’s very existence. When all is said and done, all that will remain of #Trump’s speech, like the smile of Alice’s Cheshire cat, is the laughter. And that, as he himself would put it, is simply 'Sad!'

Donald #Trump is accustomed to addressing diehard supporters at rallies. His press conferences are rare and tightly controlled. So the open derision of his fellow leaders at the #UN general assembly clearly came as a surprise. He insisted he was 'OK' with the mirthful reaction to his claims of historic achievements, but he was clearly not OK. Trump is said never to forgive or forget those who laugh at him, so this second outing at the UN podium is unlikely to end well for his administration’s already ambivalent relations with the global body.

Trump made an entrance - nearly half an hour later than his allotted time - determined to trash everything the UN stands for. The president explicitly rejected 'the ideology of #globalism' in globalism’s high temple and proposed in its place the 'doctrine of #patriotism'. While most leaders have used their time on the UN stage to list the agreements they have made, the protocols agreed and treaties signed, Trump clearly delighted in telling the world how many such pieces of paper he had ripped up.
