Creativity, Process & Creative Process At Work
Binding Threads

Creativity and the creative process are recognized as sterling motivators and known to be critical factors in much if not all of the work we do. Yet even though there are theories and explanations of how they are understood to function, they’re still rendered somewhat invisible, lurking quietly waiting to be uncovered, illusive and undefined in many cases. Their life and breadth is both conscious and unconscious and that may make them difficult to track, define and to power up. Especially to those not trained in creative disciplines. But uncomplicated, basic processes can also lead us to creative thinking no matter what our training has been.

Here’s what got me thinking about this- I asked myself recently what it is that I love most about the simple activity of work and combined with that the work of creating content, one of the more tangibly creative activities that engages me in my job. Also my work with clients on tapping into their creative thinking for their website content has me thinking on this.

The answer to my personal question came with a realization that it’s basic process and not only overtly creative process that teases me forward with a craving to do more, to work harder and more effectively. It quite literally makes me want to work to know, in advance, that I will become engrossed in process once I begin. Its beguiling, preoccupying charm is like a carrot tempting a hungry rabbit.

True Leadership Skills Can Be Found On The Inside

This is an inspiring piece from +Dan Oestreich about how to approach the challenges that arise in leading roles. My interpretation of a leading role extends from interpersonal relationships, family, business, any kinds of groups- even a group of two.

What stands out for me here is that we, as leaders, often forget to look to our inner experience and knowledge to find our way. To trust that. The so-called rulebook won't serve as well as truly taking a look inside to find answers. It takes a willingness to tolerate uncertainty and allow for discomfort. For learning and growth. The scaffold under all of that is honesty and self-disclosure. Once we really understand what is going on inside ourselves we can put it to good use in communicating and leading others.

"More often, my thoughts about leading turn to the unacknowledged problems and the unacknowledged people and the open-ended, vital mystery of what it means to be of influence, to be people whose self-knowledge and relationships, capacity for discernment - whose psychological wholeness - is vital to the forward motion and culture of an enterprise."

We Are All Always Searching One Way Or Another

That means you and I and it also means each of your customers and potential customers. All of us. Today, it's also the case that we don't need to consciously be searching within the context of a search engine. The layers of behaviors we perform and participate in online every day constitute an equivalent. Things are changing.

What this also means is that the imperative to know our customers and clients is ever more pressing. It means that we need to take our relationships with them more seriously than ever before.

Being aware & intentional in our actions & words matters in the each of our relational intersections. All the places we connect.

"Just as semantic search transitioned the importance of search from “strings” (i.e. unconnected bits of data) to “things” it also made possible another transition along the lines of “from machine-read factors to human psychology.

Basically when search is no longer an action that requires the activation of a specific search interface and the conscious structure of a search query, it becomes behavior-specific."

The factors that constitute success have expanded and also include these from +David Amerland:

• reach and influence
• reputation and branding
• value and impact
• values and vision
• style and attitude

Considering How Much We Talk, Why Is It We Still Don't Know Better?

It's kind of crazy. We're all talk and very little real communication actually takes place so much of the time. Learning to listen may be a big part of the solution. Communication isn't a one way street.

When it comes to company policy... and social media....
As +David Amerland says,

A good communication policy then can be reduced into a set of guidelines that:

• Bridge the divide between employees and customers
• Allow customers to get a sense of how ‘good’ a company is
• Create human touchpoints along the customer’s journey
• Allow employees and customers to have a sense of a shared journey
• Reinforce customer loyalty and a sense of trust in the company’s brand

Within that context, communication is not something that’s imposed by a company that has a corporate character and an image to protect, it should be part of what a company does on both sides of the customer facing divide.

It should engender empowerment, trust and responsibility in its employees, as much as it should create a sense of loyalty, trust and enthusiasm in its customers. Anything less than that is just a ticking time bomb waiting to explode the next time some company rule or regulation comes up and needs to be applied.

Altering The Height of The Bar Towards A Lightness of Being
Put One Foot In Front Of The Other

Consistent forward motion. Some days, that’s all it takes. One small step and then one more. Whether it be an actual physical step or a mental step, I find that movement will provide the magic if I’m trying to enhance or dislodge just about anything that might be encountered in life day to day.

Movement is both sustaining and transformative.

For the most part, discipline has never been much of an issue for me. I’m easily trained into a routine, develop habits like they’re the potato chips I try to avoid. I arrive at a decision to do something and incorporate it. Like healthy life-style choices. I know what’s good for me. I like routine and I like to know I can count on myself to follow-through with a plan and that means I integrate my choices as a daily expectation, put it on the calendar so to speak.

That said, exercise is a touchy subject for me. It’s coming on five years since my physical activities were involuntarily reduced to a level that would have been laughable before the sad fateful day that began a cascade of changes to my lifestyle. Through no choice of my own.

My mind, my will and desire aren’t the sole masters of what I get to do with my body anymore.

I have to cooperate with myself in ways I tended to avoid in the past because I allowed my will to be my way. My will was a cherished slice of my character and caused me to override discomfort in ways I found useful.

Now, I am forced to approach exercise with an internal collaborative spirit culling the deepest sense of the mind/body connection.

The details aren’t important and honestly, I don’t want to go into them, but suffice to say one thing after another has made for a veritable pile of unavoidable restrictions. I’ve gone from someone who relished the fact that a significant portion of each day was centered around the things I was passionate about that involved using and pushing my body to now being someone who just cannot do that anymore. The shock and disbelief of that is renewed on an almost daily basis.

There are times transformation manifests simply by being still, by cultivating a feeling awareness to whatever happens to be there inside. That particular kind of patience delivers change naturally without help from a mind that is always trying to direct things. If I notice I feel something, stay with the feeling in my body without distracting away, there’s a good chance I’ll also notice it has changed before too long. Resilience and acceptance manifest.

Movement has occurred.
Sometimes, even in stillness.

One foot in front of the other. The stripped down version. The new normal. I haven’t stopped because I’m driven to continue to be in transformative motion.

Regardless of scale, it’s something I get pleasure and benefit from.

And while it’s utterly different now, I am out there on the trail doing what I can. It appears to be the new normal. But who knows? Life is never certain and we truly do not know what will happen next.

As +David Amerland says in today's Sunday Read,

"I’ve exercised all my life. It was a chance discovery when I was around 12 that showed me that whatever I felt, happy, sad, depressed or elated could be channeled into the ephemeral construct of physical activity and its sensation transformed. The good things I felt, then magnified, somehow felt better. The bad things were diminished. Made to seem inconsequential. Exercise, I found, ground me. Anchored me. Made me feel alive and real and the inevitable barriers it pushed my efforts up against deflated my younger self’s sense of ego and self-importance. My self-centeredness vanished. I loved it. I made it my drug of choice."

The Lightness of Being

I’ve exercised all my life. I loved it. I made it my drug of choice.

Stripped of the sense of entitlement that ego demands I’ve always felt at peace during and after exercise. Which is why I have always found ways to train even when I haven’t felt like training, or had had to cut back down on an already stripped-to-the-bone sleep schedule so I can get an hour’s physical training in.

The importance of the psychology of exercise is beginning to be understood. (https://goo.gl/cNK0kn). We all know exercise is good for us (https://goo.gl/S7Sqa1) we are also beginning to understand just how deeply ingrained it is in the ancient roots of the bodies we live in (https://goo.gl/74gxsF) and its persistent effects on our minds (https://goo.gl/Ly7Tjf).

The complex biochemistry that makes our bodies affect our minds (https://goo.gl/4wMi7N) means that getting physical is the one key we can use to unlock the depths of the area between our ears (https://goo.gl/2ecbdG). This, of course, begs the interesting question of why do we find it so hard to exercise? And Emily Balcetis’ TED talk on the subject is both eye-opening and enlightening (https://goo.gl/ckwLu6) highlighting the complexity of ancient drives and seemingly good choices that have the effect of getting in our way and making us our own worst enemies.

It’s not only that we feel better psychologically and physically when we train, we also feel better when we train as we age (https://goo.gl/BDP084) and that is key to just having a better quality of life, overall: https://goo.gl/hCikuL. The ancient Greeks believed in “a sound mind in a sound body” (https://goo.gl/9OrXfK) and made exercise into a form of informal worship. They felt duty-bound to keep themselves the best they could as a thank you to their gods (https://goo.gl/aawLL).

We now have the science that validates their creed (https://goo.gl/lhLR5f) if not necessarily their cosmological view. Of late I have been actively involved in the Darebee Project (https://goo.gl/BeK2dz) started by +Neila Rey. Designed to simply make fitness accessible and fun and to provide for those who go deeper an anchor in a fluid world (https://goo.gl/CwV6Ax). With adherents from all over the world (https://goo.gl/IyoYIh) what is fascinating is the voices of some of those who have found their way to it: https://goo.gl/MKjjJJ.

What we see, as data comes in, is that age appears to not be quite the barrier we think it to be: https://goo.gl/bzGFuc and that the more we exercise the more we improve: https://goo.gl/d77RV7. Exercise is more than a way to feel good (https://goo.gl/12JqId). It is, it would appear, a way to stop feeling old: https://goo.gl/rHX1bi.

Some of the reasons why exercise is traditionally so hard to maintain were unpacked in a recent podcast interview I gave as part of my work for Darebee: https://goo.gl/LxypYo. Some of the answers are provided by perhaps the most unlikely of sources, the CDC: https://goo.gl/jsCM4D.

We live in a world where uncertainty is the norm, change is constant and the challenges never stop. It is wrong to think of life as something that stops for us the moment we retire or the moment we get past 30. If we live and breathe, it is a struggle. Exercise helps us become more resilient (https://goo.gl/1kLdbr).

It helps us reset when we are mentally tired: https://goo.gl/RHDGGI. It helps us become smarter: https://goo.gl/MsUpih and it improves the inner connections of all the disparate parts of what we call “self”: https://goo.gl/KqGvLy. To work it needs to be neither hard, nor painful. It just needs to be fun and it requires a little imagination: https://goo.gl/p10Rck (how else would you be able to transform yourself into a fierce Samurai warrior, in your living room, holding half a broomstick?).

I sometimes play around recreating film moments, like the opening sequence of The Raid (https://goo.gl/8AJHDa) - https://goo.gl/n4pTvO that allow me to momentarily escape into a make-believe world.

If we live and breathe, it is a gift the world has given us. What we then do with that gift is our way of paying the world back. We need to be as healthy as possible to do that.

One of the benefits of exercise is that on at least one day of the week you can indulge in cookies and croissants, donuts and chocolate cake and since the health benefits of coffee are now well documented (https://goo.gl/F1luYI) and even W.H.O. recommends it (https://goo.gl/2rz15D) it goes without saying that there should be a massive coffee pot on hand, today. Have an awesome Sunday, wherever you are.
