Robotic surgery
How can robotic surgery benefit you?
Robotic surgery allows doctors to have better precision and control during the operation. It also helps your doctor better see the site of surgery. Instead of one large opening, your doctor can operate through a few tiny cuts. This can help lower the risk of infection and will cause smaller scars. Because it is a less invasive procedure, your recovery time may be faster, you may experience less pain, and you may get to go home from the hospital sooner.

Extensive experience performing robotic surgery
We’re proud to offer state-of-the-art technology for robotic surgery at Phelps Hospital. The da Vinci Xi® Surgical System has been used for minimally invasive procedures for more than 3 million patients around the world, including many patients right here in Westchester. Our surgeons are specially qualified to use the da Vinci Xi Surgical System and undergo extensive training simulations to master their robotic surgical skills.
What types of surgical procedures use robots?
We offer robotic surgery with the da Vinci Xi robot for various types of procedures. We also perform total knee replacement using ROSA, a highly advanced robotic surgical tool.
General robotic surgery
Robot-assisted surgery gives you a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery. Instead of one large incision, your surgeon will operate through a few tiny incisions, allowing for faster recovery with less pain, scarring and blood loss than regular surgery. Robotic surgery may also be an option if you’re not a candidate for traditional surgery.
Thoracic robotic surgery
Robotic thoracic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure in which the surgeon makes several tiny incisions between the ribs, then inserts small robotic arms and a camera through the incisions. Special tools attached to the robotic arms allow the surgeon to cut, grasp and stitch.
Urological robotic surgery
In urological surgery, fine, delicate motions are needed to preserve neurovascular bundles and reconstruct the urinary tract to ensure continence. Robotic surgery allows for this precision by using instruments that give the surgeon a tremendous range of motion, accuracy and precision.
Gynecologic robotic surgery
Traditional laparoscopy gives surgeons a 2D view and tools that can move in three directions. With the robot, your surgeon can see a high-definition 3D view inside of your body and control delicate instruments that move in seven different directions, much like a human wrist. The robot is completely under your specialist’s control throughout the entire surgery.
Bariatric robotic surgery
Bariatric surgical procedures cause weight loss by limiting the amount of food your stomach can hold. Most weight loss surgeries today are performed using minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgical techniques.
Knee robotic surgery
In some cases, our surgeons can perform total knee replacement using ROSA, a powerful navigation system and a robot arm that provides exceptional dexterity and control of movement. The arm moves smoothly and efficiently, enhancing the surgeon’s ability to perform complex maneuvers with complete control and accuracy.
