Happy Record Store Day!

Happy Record Store Day! Avid free music listeners are also among the best purchasers of music. Makes sense, because we love music! Today is dedicated to keeping independent record stores alive. Please take time to support your local record stores and favorite recording artists today!

Most participating stores have giveaways, live in-store performances, free swag, contests, and limited edition Record Store Day pressings (pdf). We have even been to some shops who celebrate the holiday with cookouts and cookie decorating. Always a lot of fun -- and Record Store Day helps keep the independent music shops going.

Get out there and be part of the party today!

Here are some of the Free Music Archive artists with recordings being offered AT RECORD STORES ONLY to celebrate Record Store Day. See the official website for the full list of Record Store Day releases. Show some love.

SXSW Comp from NPR

It's SXSW time again, and the web is buzzing with the annual collections promoting the performers appearing at this year's festival, March 8-17.

National Public Radio (NPR) is in on the act this year. Steven Thompson announced this morning:

It says a lot about SXSW's size and scope that this "sampler" of the annual music festival spans six and a half hours, but here we are: 100 songs by 100 artists worth discovering at this year's big event.

Handpicked from among thousands of artists, this genre-traversing playlist picks highlights, discoveries and future thrills from this year's festival — and, for the next 30 days, it's available for free download in its entirety, as one 813 MB zip file, right here. Of course, for those without that much hard-drive space, you can download each song individually, as well as stream The Austin 100 on this page and through NPR Music's various mobile devices.

Come back to NPR.org/SXSW for live showcases, photos, videos and podcasts from this year's festival. On March 13, starting at 8:45 p.m. ET, we'll present a live broadcast from Stubb's in Austin, featuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Cafe Tacvba, Alt-J, Youth Lagoon, Waxahatchee and Le1f. Information on how to enter for tickets is at SXSW.com. On March 14, NPR's Alt.Latino presents a free SXSW showcase at Auditorium Shores with Cafe Tacvba, Molotov and Bajofondo. Doors are at 5 p.m. ET. We'll be recording the show, so check for highlights later.

We still have more SXSW coverage to announce. Follow @nprmusic for details and updates.

Record Store Day, 2012

Here's a stat the recording industry trade organizations always seem to breeze past: People who enjoy free music online get turned on to exponentially more sounds and purchase them in the shops and online. Yup, we fans of diverse music typically have bigger, more diverse music collections than the average listener.

Let's enjoy our free music AND support the artists we discover! Tomorrow is that fabulous international event Record Store Day 2012, gang, and you can bet Team Oddio will be out at our favorite vinyl joints. Support your local music shop!

This is the fifth year of RSD, and as usual, there will be Record Store Day exclusives (pdf) and if your shops celebrate the holiday, there are bound to be lots of freebies, fun stuff, and events. Our regional shops have sent us home with bags of promos, provided free musical performances, offered storewide discounts, and even hosted free cookouts. It's a celebration, so get out there, friends!

Music for the Earth

Earth Day celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Earth Day 2011 is Friday, April 22nd. Events in your area (worldwide) might be listed at the Earth Day Network, the official global coordinators.

Here are two programs that are probably of interest to you.

Music for the Earth

In celebration of Earth Day, the Earth Day Network, Sonicbids, Musician’s Friend and artists from around the world are giving you the gift of "green" music. All of the tracks on the Music for the Earth site have an Earth Day theme, demonstrating social responsibility, dedication to the environmental movement, and love for our planet Earth. You can freely download all the tracks submitted to the project.

The Top 20 most downloaded artists as of 11:59 pm EST on May 9 will be eligible to win a Gibson Jackson Browne Model 1 Acoustic Guitar, courtesy of Musician’s Friend as well as a feature on the Earth Day Network homepage.

A Billion Acts of Green®

From greening schools to hosting town hall discussions on clean energy investment and green jobs, Earth Day Network leads its network in thousands of Earth Day events and actions worldwide each year. To catalyze global environmental activism, Earth Day Network has chosen A Billion Acts of Green® as the theme for Earth Day 2011.

At over 40 million actions to date, A Billion Acts of Green®– the largest environmental service campaign in the world– inspires and rewards simple individual acts and larger organizational initiatives that further the goal of measurably reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainability. The goal is to register one billion actions in advance of the global Earth Summit in Rio in 2012. For more information click here.
