This is one of those legendary, well-respected, classic, master albums. Here's what others have to say about Anthony Manning meticulously crafted work, Islets In Pink Polypropylene.
REVIEW
ANTHONY MANNING: Islets in Pink Polypropylene
writer John Twells. 16 Jan 2014
from FACT Magazine
Forgotten Classics is a new weekly feature, where we ask FACT contributors and noted diggers from across the spectrum to pick an obscure gem that they think has been unfairly brushed under the carpet and explain why it’s worthy of re-appraisal. First up….
Released in 1994 by the unpredictable Irdial Discs imprint (who later became notorious for their collection of Conet Project recordings), visual artist and musical explorer Anthony Manning’s debut album was way ahead of its time. It would be easy to lump Islets in Pink Polypropylene in with other ‘electronica’ records of the day, but Manning’s painstaking experiments were a marked degree of separation from Autechre’s crisp and chirpy Amber or even Aphex Twin’s esoteric Selected Ambient Works Volume II. This unique quality can be attributed to the fact that Manning had a particularly unusual production method, one which 20 years later sounds almost impossible to believe.
In his own words, the process took “many weeks per piece,” and those were weeks of spent doing very little else, including sleeping. The inherent speed bump in his process was that Manning had decided to limit himself to exclusively composing the album on a Roland R8, a cheap drum machine which was elevated (slightly) by its pitch function and fiddly (but serviceable) sequencer [Read More]
MORE REVIEWS
"This is astonishing music" ~Wire
"Anthony Manning's music has more in common with the great electronic composers like Steve Reich and Morton Feldman than many of his contemporaries. 'Islets' creates deeply moving tones that blend into vibrating percussion sections, like witnessing a sythesised Indian tabla player master at work. Purest moments of grace and poise. Along with 'Chromium Nebulae' on the shortlist for the Baked Goods desert island list. Timeless and indispensible." ~Baked Goods
"Marks a milestone in electronic music, nothing less. Flowing spheres of music, there gos on and on. This was original made on a Roland R-8 drum machine and I’m not kidding but listening too this beatless music, it makes it very hard to believe." ~Tine
"Unapologetically minimalist in its beatlessness and atonal splutter, this LP adheres to the Songs Have Been Done school by being one continuous piece divided into five nameless movements. Bang up the Ikea-fitted street of Michael Nyman and Phillip Glass, only rougher, less cyclical and cramming in more ideas. It's also far too engaging to be ambient. Put it on while ironing and you risk burning your prize garments.
The sharp, crystal melodies suck you in and the whole thing appears to grow and evolve like some continuously spiralling fractal. Flag-wavingly obscure and esoteric it may be, but 'Islets' is easier listening than you'd imagine." ~Select 1.95
"This isn't simply ambient, and it is not ambient dub. Anthony Manning puts together synth sounds with eccentric modifications for an ambient plink sound. Take two tabs, don your snorkel gear and swim with reef fish as they come into and out of focus, and the drugs move you back and forth with the ocean, and as the bubbles sparkle all around you as they head for the surface, you will understand the structure of the sounds. Bassy motions are the swells, and lighter synth sounds are the bubbles. Even the cover can convey the music. If you are a hopelessly religious conservative, stare at the cover while listening to the music at loud volume." ~Spies.com
"Manning is a key figure in early 90's abstract electronic music. I cannot quite get a handle on what he is up to here. Islets is oft-considered his greatest work, but I can't really measure it against anything else from the man. On it's own terms, it's an exquisite esoteric listen. I wonder what would've happened had he made himself into a brand name rather than say, Aphex Twin. The software is not quite there for him in '93 or '94 it seems, but he gets great effect from how he runs his tapes backwards, simultaneously letting lines bubble up and get sucked back down to the river bed.." ~imbidimts.blogspot.com
"What seems like an eon ago, well 1994 to be exact, the classic 'Islets in Pink Polypropylene' first shot into the public's gaze. The material still sounds light years away in terms of electronic composition, structure and instrumentation, feeling all the more astounding when you realise that all the material originates from the editing sections of the Roland R8 drum machine. Amazing and legendary album from Anthony Manning on the equally legendary Irdial label, from 1994. This album is a perfect summation of the term abstract electronica. Playing out like one long track, this music is beatless, and has a shifting, open structure. Oddly morphing keyboards wobble around some strange and disconcerting background textures in a most unique and strange way. If you work anywhere that requires you to wear a lab coat, this should be playing in the background at all times." ~stance-out.blogspot.com

Be sure to read Anthony Manning's own description of the process on his official website
The whole album was composed and realised on the Roland R8 drum machine. It followed the same process as the Elastic Variations pieces, with the major addition of many, many hours of editing [Read More]

Shake That Bootay with Juno What
The press release of electric boogie funk monsters Juno What?! is spot on, saying:
Juno What?! is a shameless dance party.
Formed in 2008, the band has quickly become the leading practitioner of high-energy disco booty jams, and live electro-funk.
Juno What?! is bringing their illuminated madness to stages across the country. Catalyzing dance floors into sonic landscapes, the band has ignited a devoted following of fans by providing raw, electrifying shows which are devoid of the aimless wanderings of the lesser jam community.
Their sound is ahead of its time yet still rooted in the foundation of early-80’s dance grooves with a devout appreciation for sternum-bumping progressive themes.
Juno What?! kindly shares two booty-shakin' albums for your pleasure on their website!
The second album is live, and just check out how they bring it live:

Fiona Soe Paing Takes You to New Places
The Black Lantern Music label is one of the best labels putting out exciting releases right now. Their artist roster includes acts like Tickle, Eaters, Nevada Base, Ill Papa Giraffe, Burning Bright, Comma, Asthmatic Astronaut, Daddy_Scrabble, Underling, and Krowne.Black Lantern Music writes, "Over the years we have released a massive range of hip-hop, electronic and experimental music, taking in styles as diverse as jazz, techno, crunk, future bass, synth-pop, electro, alt.rap, math-rock, dark synth, chillwave, dubstep, ambient and doomcrunk... and that's just scratching the surface."
Also in the lineup is Fiona Soe Paing, a remarkable woman producing experimental electronic music mingled with her ethereal voice singing in Burmese and English. Her music takes you to new places. Here's an example of what we mean, the song "Daymoon Sun" from Fiona Soe Paing's Tower of Babel EP+DVD.
The song is also featured in the Black Lantern Music label sampler BLM:50 Raise the Black Lantern. The label says, "This Black Lantern 'best of' features 50 tracks, some from across our back catalogue, plus a few exclusives. It's available from our Bandcamp as a pay-what-you-want download. We release most of our music free of charge, and when we do charge, that money goes straight to the artists. We're raising funds for a website re-launch - if you can donate some money in exchange for these 50 tracks, we'd very much appreciate it." Details from Fiona Soe Paing's profile at Black Lantern:
Based in Aberdeenshire, Fiona Soe Paing has been evolving her unique brand of experimental, vocal-led electronica since 2007. One of her first home demos, sung in fledgling phrasebook Burmese, was discovered on Myspace by the legendary BBC DJ Charlie Gillett, who included it on one of his Sound of the World compilations, released internationally on Warner Music, alongside artists including Gotan Project and Devendra Banhart.
Tower of Babel EP is accompanied by a limited edition DVD of music videos by New Zealand animation artist Zennor Alexander. Their previous collaborations have been screened on The Arts Channel on Sky TV New Zealand, as well as at film festivals including Digital Fringe Melbourne and NEON digital arts festival Dundee. Fiona has performed the 'live cinema'-style set with the projected animations at venues including Auckland Art Gallery, Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art and with the National Theatre of Scotland....
In early 2012, Fiona was granted funding through Creative Scotland to make new work, and two of the new tracks are included on the Tower of Babel EP.
The 2010 EP Songs From No Man's Land is also a winner, featuring four tracks from the audio-visual performance of No Man's Land. The description reads, "Skeletal, off-world electronica from Aberdeenshire based Scottish/ Burmese producer and vocalist Fiona Soe Paing - alien lullabies envelop and mesmerize in the spaces between dreaming and waking." And just check the reviews:
"Weirdness to soothe your soul" --Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music
"hybrid going on mutant" --The Guardian
"stylish, elegant and sinister" --New Zealand Herald
"outrageously beautiful" --Grand Central Records
All the positive reviews ring true, and Fiona Soe Paing is nothing short of remarkable. We love her.

Just as the seed needs water, the song requires a listener. Like a small grain that blossoms into a tree, the song desires to transcend its own brevity. Inspired by these thoughts we invite you to listen to our E.P. Six songs that require no more than 16 minutes of attention, because they wish to be perceived as an integral work. A work that, worry not, intends to suit these hectic times we live in. So faced with the fleeting time in our world comes the significance of being brief.
Here we find ourselves on the web, contemplating all that is cyber and governs our world today. This is the source of inspiration for our arrangements, instrumentation, chants and effects.
And so our task, to get the rawness of a seed, those that grow into trees to turn into guitars, mix it with the electronic, virtual, digital world, appearing ever so fiercely to compete with our notion of reality - and there you go – these are our proposed aesthetics.
An aesthetic in service art itself, the art of songwriting, the art of brazilian songwriting, passionately invoking everything that was done up till now, and why not? moving on.
So now we open this door, reach out a hand, and invite you to witness our way of re-processing old emotions, those that happily afflict everyone on this world, and enjoy these seeds which hopefully will flourish within the listener.

Nossa, Cara! New Sounds of São Paulo is a labour of love highlighting what we think are some of the most exciting artists to be found anywhere in the world, never mind stacked up on top of each other in the same city.Nossa, Cara! New Sounds of São Paulo is available from the Sounds and Colours website and from Bandcamp.
Nossa, Cara! New Sounds of São Paulo in partnership with Brasil Music Exchange features a wide variety of music being made in São Paulo today. M. Takara 3, Psilosamples and Guizado represent some of the exciting electronic music coming out of the city. Chankas and Bodes e Elefantes make music which has a fearless approach to sonic exploration. The sounds of north-eastern Brazil are represented by Iara Rennó, Juçara Marçal e Kiko Dinucci and Metá-Metá (featuring Juçara and Kiko with added Thiago França). R. Brandao and Lurdez da Luz show the way forward for São Paulo hip-hop. They are joined by Tulipa, Bruno Morais and Lulina, who continue the MPB tradition in delightfully absurd ways, Karina Buhr, Juliana R and Bárbara Eugênia who bring a number of new ideas to the Brazilian cantora tradition, and Rafael Castro, who confounds with each new slice of dexterous folk or rock he puts to tape.

Post-Rock from Dresden
ne:o are a five-piece group in Dresden, Germany, who blur genres between rock, jazz, and electronic music. They sometimes remind us of The Art of Noise and the great jazz-post-rock experimental bands.
Other times they call to mind Jaga Jazzist, who Wikipedia labels as Jazz, Nu jazz, Acid jazz, Electronica, Experimental rock, and Post-rock. ne:o drifts between those realms, too.
German netlabel Aaahh Records shares two albums by ne:o in which the band really shines, studio album illoj and a live performance album direkt. Both album pages have donation buttons for you to show your appreciation.

Tribute Albums from Stereogum
The Stereogum tribute compilation to The Strokes is gone. Ah, the ephemeral nature of Internet content. Three other Stereogum tribute comps to Bjork's Post, REM's Automatic For The People, and Radiohead's OK Computer are still available for your pleasure. You will see well-known artists among the artists making these covers
From Stereogum:
"After completing and launching Drive XV, our tribute to R.E.M.'s Automatic For The People, we gathered at 11th St Bar one night to figure out which album we should tackle next. OKX, our inaugural step into the compilation world, had been a no-brainer: 2007 was OK Computer's 10th Anniversary, and we wanted to honor the milestone. This time, though, when we started off thinking of possibilities based on release dates -- Drive XV was celebrating 15 years of Automatic after all -- nothing seemed quite right....
"After discarding our release-date almanac, someone suggested Björk. It was late, and we don't remember who said what, but it was a great idea. Debut, her first post-Sugarcubes album came out in 1993, which could count for a nice and even 15 years in 2008, but Post was the obvious choice: It's a stronger album top to bottom -- a culmination of her work to that point. It includes any number of iconic tracks and due to the richness and variety of Björk's self-described "spastic" palette, an infinite number of interpretive possibilities. Think, for example, of "It's Oh So Quiet," Björk's big-band cover of Betty Hutton's "Blow a Fuse," the almost industrial noise of "Army Of Me," the wispy, avant ambiance of "Cover Me," etc. When we spoke with Björk about her thoughts on Post, our choice seemed even more appropriate."

Electronic Greats 1955 - 1984 Mixed
"In early 2010, what would eventually become Antique Electronic Synthesizer Greats was simply a concept for a live set. Fluorescent Grey, aka Robbie Martin, cut almost a thousand tiny samples and loops from works dating from 1955 to 1984, limiting his sources to strictly electronic and/or synthesized recordings.
"His rules allowed for non-synthesized compositions (e.g., Delia Derbyshire's tape cutting based tones) as well as synthesizer audio of any kind, including the Hammond Novachord. And far from simply a stolen sample collage, or meta-mash-up project, Robbie wanted to allow the mix he composed to preserve and highlight the eras' best sounds in a comprehensive backdrop. Some of those painstakingly found and excised snippets may be all but indiscernible to most, while some tease with their familiarity (Depeche Mode bass drum? YMO hi hat?), and some are nakedly in homage (synth lines from Vangelis, Giorgio Moroder). All are as playful as the puzzling track names, one of the most obvious of which are pieces that re-imagine the sound of John Carpenter's best synth-centric movie scores. From the uneasy sounds of horror to the sweet spot of vintage synth-pop and industrial, to the brief satisfyingly bizarre vocal cameos by Alan Vega and a Spanish industrial/noise outfit, it runs the gamut of its chosen time period exhaustively....
"Given the uncannily nostalgic or modern moods evoked, it can be all too easy to forget that the entire mix is comprised solely of an endlessly rotating roster of up to 15 isolated loops, all at least a quarter of a century old, some twice that age. On some songs, you could imagine a DJ dialing into the sounds of AFX or Mr. Oizo, an amusing stunt for some of the source material sounds unmistakably dated in a way that has yet to be retrofetishized. Proto-electronica futurism captured in Chris Carter's sequences or Morton Subotnick's Autechre-like FM synth splatters, works that indisputably sound futuristic in their own right. Dated or not, the novelty factor of an overwhelmingly corny synth brass sample is sometimes too good to resist, making it nigh impossible to prevent that old fashioned sound from antiquing the whole mix.
"This pastiche is offered up in both a mix and an individually tracked album for maximum utility. Use the cover art and the hidden messages contained herein as a resource for your own Antique Electronic Music search...."

Slowfoot Label Sampler
Slowfoot is a South London, England record label exploring "the boundaries between popular and experimental music."
"There really aren’t that many labels around that will smash you with shards of electro bolshiness one minute, soothe you with tuba loops the next and then allow you to fully embrace the jazz fiend inside moments later; but Slowfoot manage it and it make it seem like the most normal thing ever". ~ Oli Marlow, Rock a Rolla
"Slowfoot Records is fast becoming one of England's foremost purveyors of essential experimental soundscapes, putting out records that utilise wildly innovative recording processes to make future-music built on the recognisable foundations of genres such as jazz, dub and electronica." ~ experimusic
In exchange for an email address, Slowfoot will give you this recent 14-track label sampler.
