Over 100 people are missing, many feared drowned in the shipwreck.
#MSF medical teams stabilized survivors with most urgent needs and referred 7 people for life-saving hospital treatment.
Patients are in shock and suffer from their nearly drowning

Centro Astalli expresses serious concern about the New Security Decree on migration in Italy: #migrants represent humanity on a journey in search of justice and rights. They should not be instruments for political propaganda.

"The worst Mediterranean tragedy of this year has just occurred."
~ @RefugeesChief moments ago after hearing of some 150 lives lost off the coast of Libya
We must:
1⃣Restore rescue at sea.
2⃣End refugee/migrant detention in Libya.
3⃣Increase safe pathways.
Now. pic.twitter.com/ofK0HU0Mcp

More devastating loss of life. I don't know the dynamics of the shipwreck or where exactly it happened. But if Europe had a SAR mission, if EU govts didn't obstruct NGO rescue ops, these people might not have died. And survivors wouldn't have been taken back to abuse in Libya twitter.com/IOM_Libya/stat…

⛔️🚢 BREAKING: OLTRE 150 MORTI AL LARGO DELLE COSTE LIBICHE.
Nessuna Ong in mare, nessun mezzo di soccorso europeo, solo la Guardia costiera libica.
Eppure si parte. E si muore.

Agreed. I think it's important to acknowledge (sort of/possible) forward movement on disembarkation/relocation agreements among EU countries, while pointing out hypocrisy of continued support for Libyan Coast Guard.

"The EU has spent a lot of money to train the Libyan coastguard & therefore...has a responsibility..It is no longer acceptable for human beings to be sent back to detention camps" - Luxembourg's interior minister Jean Asselborn Was it ever acceptable? bit.ly/2Z3MTBm

In sum: step in the right direction, a lot details to be worked out, EU leaders still need to disavow cooperation with Libyan authorities that results in human rights abuse…and new @SOSMedIntl and @MSF_Sea rescue mission may provide first test of these pledges 10/10 pic.twitter.com/bP66Y9xjfq

Yesterday Macron endorsed cooperation with Libyan coast guard “that has shown its effectiveness” (though he added, “subject to the first points I have mentioned” e.g. extreme vulnerability of refugees and migrants to abuse and violence in Libya) 9/10 pscp.tv/w/1djxXpodeQvxZ pic.twitter.com/AKBWeKs2ER

But statement also says ships in the Mediterranean must “obey instructions from competent authorities.” Meaning Libyan Coast Guard orders to disembark in Libya, exposing them to arbitrary, abusive detention? (the France-Germany proposal includes a similar line) 8/10 pic.twitter.com/Rb8ztjZYcJ

On positive note, French govt statement on meeting includes a good call – finally! – to Libyan authorities to end systematic detention of refugees and migrants, and a pledge to support alternatives to detention 6/10 pic.twitter.com/adzoBDhrnZ

It's unclear whether and how the 8-country agreement will be activated in the immediate term. Sounds like much was kicked down the road to a proposed meeting in Valletta, Malta, in September. 5/10

The FR-DE proposal talks abt relocating only asylum seekers bit.ly/2GpSYAJ tho FR statement talks abt returning ppl "transferred from first country of entry who are not eligible for international protection" maybe (?) opening the door for broader relocation program. 4/10 pic.twitter.com/sw6KxaWJox

Enacting this pledge, based on a France-Germany proposal, seems a bit difficult given that Italy & Malta reject basic premise of disembarkation in closest safe ports, i.e. in Italy & Malta, and want everyone to be relocated, whether applying for asylum or not 3/10

The meeting, called by Macron, seems like a step in the right direction, with 8 countries – France, Finland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Lithuania, Croatia, and Ireland – supporting a temporary relocation mechanism for people rescued at sea, with 6 more agreeing “in principle” 2/10

It’s still unclear what EXACTLY was agreed in the informal Paris meeting of EU interior ministers (without Italy’s Salvini) on migration in the Med yesterday. Here are some preliminary thoughts based on media reporting & the French govt’s statement.
