i'm sure that's a part of it. the reality is people didn't understand the costs, at least until pretty recently. many of the harms we've long reported (privacy, disinfo, etc) for years seemed vague, hypothetical, dense or distant. but those harms are real and close to home now

I think they were trying to give all the characters equal or similar screen/story time, probably setting up for a lot of BS spin offs, to the detriment of the main story..which.. could have taken 5 minutes to explain.
