Fair enough. I meant non-Israelis see him as some kind of savior. But I don’t think he’s all that popular among Israelis either. You’re right, everything could change in eve a few weeks!

Or perhaps people simply disdain Netanyahu so much they are willing to overlook real problems in his challengers’ priorities so long as they challenge him.

It’s definitely a broader tendency. A lot of people also don’t know how to reconcile politicians committed to liberal democracy who are also committed to annexation or Israeli sovereignty over the WB

Hmm. I might have been. Maybe not widely viewed, but it was not an unpopular view. I think when I wrote it I was extremely frustrated with the glowing accolades Olmert was getting at the time.

In addition to all his other faults and reasons for not being popular in Israel, it’s important to realize his formation of a new political party will further splinter the left/center vote without siphoning votes from the right/center-right.

I see people outside of Israel, particularly in the US, are becoming re-enamoured with Ehud Barak. Call it the Abba Eban factor. I wrote this when similar sentiments were expressed about Ehud Olmert. thedailybeast.com/the-abba-eban-…

I don’t understand. They disagree with the Museum’s contention, and think the Holocaust can be useful for comparative purposes.

Trump’s Mideast team and the Israeli religious right are one and the same. This is totally inappropriate and contrary to U.S. interests. twitter.com/JacobMagid/sta…

Agreed. Experience? (Not sure that’s Ability to work with others? Political skill and a base of support? International credibility? Also need to define those things in a policy context—what policy goal would these be used toward?

Also re Barak: the Lebanon withdrawal, Camp David, and Taba are all generally considered failures by most Israeli Jews.

And remember: Barak was happy to break his former party, Labor, up to stay in Netanyahu’s government AND work with him to push a military option re Iran. He’s no white knight.

So Ehud Barak is forming a new party to challenge Netanyahu. I don’t see how this helps the left or those who don’t want Likud in power; more likely his party will split the left/center-left/center vote.
