By helping to put a two-state outcome on life support, an administration that sees itself as the most pro-Israeli in US history will one day be judged as anything but. A one-state outcome is inconsistent with an Israel that is both Jewish and democratic.

4 takeaways on US-Mexico deal: 1) not that new; 2) unlikely to have much impact; 3) Trump admin used emergency powers never meant for this; 4) exacerbated reputation for unreliability/inconsistency, a problem for business, allies that invites challenges from foes

.⁦⁩ boasts about being unpredictable and keeping others off balance. This can work but it can also generate challenges-and it is a major problem for allies and others who depend on a president & the US to be reliable and consistent

Stunning interview in which the US ambassador to Israel advances policies that are in the interest of neither the United States nor Israel. Will have the added effect of increasing intensity of rejection to whatever plan Trump administration puts forward

re-reading w Jared Kushner who seems unaware of what he is saying. He supports Palestinian self-determination, but wont discuss his plan. this makes no sense, as self-determ'n means Pal'ns get to decide their future, which is clearly not an option

. comments on 30th anniversary of Tiananmen Square welcome, but appear to be motivated more by politics than principle as Trump administration unwilling to back democracy/human rights in Turkey, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Philippines, etc.

The Queen’s toast on value of post-WWII institutions, gifts of Atlantic Charter, Churchill volume: all meant to send message of the value of Anglo-American cooperation, US leadership on behalf of world order to a Potus who by word/deed has shown he does not value this tradition

observing arriving in UK & his comments re , , etc, hard not to think back to what Churchill said about the often undiplomatic chief American diplomat John Foster Dulles: the only bull he knew who carried around with him his own china shop

Provocative, thoughtful, important piece by ⁦⁩ on reframing gun violence as a public health issue (away from an absolutist, all-or-nothing rights issue) and regulating both guns and those who would have access to them.

Best analysis I’ve seen (by ) of Israeli political path over next 6 months and how US peace plan increasingly being used for political purposes by US, Israeli governments rather than to promote peace.

Read this by on why the new tariffs imposed on Mexico are the deepest betrayal of any US trading partner yet seen and were “justified” in ways never intended by the law cited. Congress should resist on both policy and institutional grounds.

This suggests 1) “shooting the messenger” not just an expression in N Korea; 2) Kim needed scapegoats to explain lack of eco results post-summit; 3) there’s a deal to be had if US open to reducing sanctions in exchange for limits short of denuclearization

The overuse of sanctions (and underuse of other tools) is leading to the emergence of dollar alternatives. We are putting at risk the “exorbitant privilege” we derive from the $ being the world’s reserve currency. Is anyone at Treasury pointing this out?

In the “just when you thought you couldn’t be surprised anymore” department: “The demonization of carbon dioxide is just like the demonization of the poor Jews under Hitler.” This from the NSC staffer overseeing climate change on the Trump/Bolton NSC!

Somehow feel confident that a decision by the Trump Administration to stop producing estimates of global warming will not cool the planet. Expect it is only a matter of time before the ostrich replaces the eagle as our national emblem.

First tweets from Japan, associating himself with Kim Jong-un against , then he tweets supporting in his efforts to form a government. It seems politics no longer stop at the water’s edge in either direction. Short-sighted at home and abroad.

Several people asked what the US would offer in return for signing a revised, ie, toughened, JCPOA. Relief from many of the sanctions that are causing the Iranian economy to contract. Some sanctions tho would remain as they are tied to Iran’s regional behavior.
