Jewish Books, A Book Review Carnival, and Some Book Reflections

Tzivia, who has more blogs than even I do, has done a great job putting together the latest edition of the Jewish Book Carnival. I definitely recommend your reading it, checking out the books and also sharing the links of course.

Here my granddaughter
is reading a book thatTzivia wrote.
We Jews are known as "the people of the Book," aren't we? I get such a kick out of seeing my grandchildren reading and showing interest in books. One is never too young to start. I started reading to my second daughter as soon as she was born, because I'd have my older daughter on my lap when nursing the baby, and I'd read to both of them. Nowadays mothers are told to start exposing the baby to "culture" even while still in utero.

I've always loved to read. A big benefit to my blogging are the books I get to review. Yes, of course, I have a review in the carnival.

Enjoy!

HH by "Seven" and other Jblogging News

Havel Havelim is hosted by Ima 2 Seven this week.  There are some very interesting posts about Israeli politics, morality and making the right choice.  I'm sure you'll find lots to read if you click the links.  Please do and participate in the premier Jewish blog carnival via our facebook pageYocheved hosts next week's HH.

Rosh Chodesh is approaching during Chanuka, and that's when I'll be hosting the next Kosher Cooking Carnival.  Send in your posts via blog carnival or send to me with kcc as subject.  And if you'd like to host an edition of KCC, please contact me, thanks.

For many of us blogging is a lot more than using the internet as our personal "horn."  It's a community or communities of bloggers with similar interests.

And here's a link for an interesting and important article about olive oil for lighting the Chanukiya.

Too Bad There's No Such Thing as A Home Run With Bases Loaded in Soccer

Soccer Dad has saved the day with a Havel Havelim Memorial   לעילוי נשמת של רבקה l'ilui nishmata shel RivkA, to uplift RivkA's soul!  There's no one, no jblogger like Soccer Dad.  When he coordinated Havel Havelim, not only did he make sure there was an edition every week, hosting it whenever necesary, but he'd send extra suggested links to the host, beyond what we'd get from jbloggers who sent in in their own.  I thought about doing something like this memorial round-up for RivkA, but it was the one and only Soccer Dad who actually did it.  Thanks!

This isn't a comprehensive Havel Havelim.  It's just focused on family, community, the Jewish Blogging one.

A Chanukah Present and JBlog Visits

When I saw Leora's "caption this" post, I knew that I had to post this "mural," by three young artists. As you can see, the Jewish art world has a future!

Last week, I took the grandkids to a fun bazaar where the kids did lots of great arts and crafts, but my jacket and trusty pouch, especially the pouch, will never be the same. My kids find my "carrying it all on my waist," and I'm not referring to fat, terribly embarrassing, so I knew that I'd have to replace the pouch with something clean.

Yesterday, when my daughter returned home to her kids, whom I'd been caring for, she brought me a present. I've now exchanged my "Steve's Packs" for a "Modan." There are some big differences in the design. Simply put, the "Steve's" is more masculine and functional, while "Modan" is more clever and feminine. Today I have to transfer all my stuff.
Baila impressed me with the books she's reading. I read lots of junk, mysteries, detectives etc. I try not to buy anything, except for my annual "bag of books" at 50 cents each from the Great Neck Public Library every summer. My daughter #1 passes me her books, for reading and storage, like the full Michael Connelly collection. Yes, highly recommended. I also borrow from neighbors. Not long ago, I read "Family Matters," (sorry I don't remember author etc) which was good. Now the same friend lent me "The Link," by Nachman Seltzer. I'm still reading it. On rare occasions, I've been given Jewish books for free to review on my blogs.
And last, but not least, as part of MAZAL TOV to Hadassah, who's soon to marry again, I super-highly recommend that you read her post about the mikvah.

Like An Ant Taking On An Elephant

If I had the time, I'd look for a funny illustration...

I must make this short, since the house needs to be gotten ready for my grandchildren's visit.

This morning I found out (thanks to my husband) that Gil Student wrote about my complaint about him on his blog. So, I replied on Shiloh Musings. Gil Student is one of the super-biggies in the jblog world (he denies we're a community). So, please read my post and comment as you wish, both here and there.

And now, once this is posted etc, I'll have to turn off the computer and get on with:
Camp Savta!
G-d willing, pictures to follow...

Reflecting on HH #122

First of all, I'm breaking with my usual practice of replying personally to all comments, which have email addresses. I apologize, though I know that most bloggers don't reply to comments, unless there's something very important.

I do appreciate your thanks, but please remember that Havel Havelim has grown and improved only because the jblog world has really become a world of serious journalists.

We have barely tapped our potential.

Following is the letter I sent with the HH #122 announcement. If you're not on my jblogger list, you can read it here.

This is far from my first Havel Havelim, and I must say that the response by jbloggers from all over the world has been amazing! Thank you one and all!

I did not restrict the amount of posts per blogger. That's for a few reasons. One, honestly, I have better things to do than judge which post is better. I know what it's like to write a "great post" Sunday morning, and then, before Monday's sun has set, to write an even better one and find that by the time the week has ended, four or more posts were submitted. I'm no Naomi Shemer, but I remember reading an interview where she was asked, "Which is your favorite song?"

Her answer was: "The last one I wrote." Each song, to me, is better than its predecessors."

So, my approach is to include everything in Havel Havelim.

Another reason is that I work on it all week, and I find it difficult if too many bloggers send their posts at the end of the week, because they were waiting to see which was best. Also, some of the bloggers may forget to send their links.

With the masses of links sent in, I no longer feel it so necessary to search the web.

One thing I ask is that you please announce it, publicize it on your blog. The blog carnivals are to expose the various blogs to more readers. Thank you!

4U-- Havel Havelim #122

I don't want to rub it in, but being a high school English teacher in Israel has its perks, and it also has its miseries. But what better way to celebrate the end of the school year than by hosting Havel Havelim?

Havel Havelim, the international jblog carnival, was established by Soccer Dad, whom I finally f2f-ed. For proof of that, read this entire Havel Havelim to the very, very end. It's now probably the longest-running blog carnival under original management.

The term “Havel Havelim” is from Kohelet, Ecclesiastes, which was written by King Solomon, who built the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and later on got all bogged down in materialism and other “excesses” and finally realized that it was nothing but norishkeit, “havel” or in English “vanities.” I think that King Solomon and his father King David were the original "bloggers." The books they wrote, when you take them chapter by chapter, can easily be described as blog posts. The stones they used to write on made them last, so that we can read them now. I doubt if today's technology will give our words any lasting effect.

I don't want to give this edition an "eyin haraa" as I put this together, but I must say that the quantity and quality of posts jbloggers have been mailing me is very impressive. #122 won't be organized in any way, just haphazard, since many posts came in emails, not the form with the topics. It's ok.

Now for the show:

Send your links for the next edition of Havel Havelim via blog carnival, and at the same time you may discover other “carnivals” to visit and enter. You can also use those forms to send kosher recipes and other kosher food posts to the Kosher Cooking Carnival. Blog carnival also has a great listing of recent carnivals for your sidebar. You can either get one for a specific carnival, like HH or KCC, or a general one.

Just a note:
I've been taking my turn at hosting Havel Havelim for quite a while, (maybe Soccer Dad will tell us when my first was,) and I'm awed by the growth and changes in the jblogging world. There are such richness, depth, intelligence and perception in the posts I've read. Also, now jbloggers know to send their posts. I'm pretty sure that this is the largest Havel Havelim I've ever hosted, and almost all of the posts came either from the blogger or from other bloggers who felt that they should be included. It's definitely a privilege to be of this period of time and part of the international jblogger community.

Thanks to
Soccer Dad for his hard work keeping this going, and if you want to host, please let him know at dhgerstman at hotmail dot com.

This appears in the
UberCarnival.

Please put up a blurb on your blog alerting readers to Havel Havelim and the fun they'll have reading the various posts. Thank you!

ok, JIB, now

I have a love-hate, no, it's an ambivalent-hate thing about JIB, the Jewish-Israeli Blog Awards.

The first year it ran, I came dead last wherever I was nominated. The second year I wasn't nominated at all, so at least I didn't lose. And actually in the "rejected" one a few months ago I did really well. Maybe that's why lots of people didn't like them.

Does that make me a sore loser, maybe.

I'm not a great fan of competitions, because too many people lose. I prefer our jblog carnivals. Now there are three, Havel Havelim (Soccer dad,) JPIX (Bagel Blogger) and my very own Kosher Cooking Carnival, which cover most bases with sufficient overlap. Too many jcarnivals would mean that we wouldn't be exposed to a variety of blogs. I've also joined the jbloggers who do our own "very mini-carnivals." I call mine "visiting."

If you want to nominate my blogs or posts in any of the categories, please do. I'm not boycotting JIB Awards. I just want us to make sure we're all winners and not losers. Isn't that the lesson we're supposed to learn during the period of Sfirat Ha'Omer?

Shabbat Shalom U'Mevorach!

I guess not all blogs "are created equal"

I keep hearing that the Bagel Blogger is back blogging, but for whatever reason, I can't access his blog without major problems with explorer. And when I see the blog, it's sans posts.

Having hosted all the jblog carnivals, KCC and JPIX, and, according to Soccer Dad, I'm either second or third in the amount of Havel Havelims hosted. So, I've certainly "hit" a log of jblogs. I must say that I've only had this sort of problem with one other blog, Dave Bender's, if I have his name right. They're both pretty generous with the pictures and graphics, so maybe that's why my computer seems allergic to them.

Let's Carnival and Not Compete!

I don't like the atmosphere I read in the comments here. I really was shocked, since I hadn't seen the nasty posts that had caused Bagel Blogger to bolt. I was too busy enjoying the challenge of hosting the 3rd jpix parts 1 & 2, The Jblog Picture Carnival and forwarding KCC posts to the Baleboosteh. I was enjoying the best of the jblog world, and of course that includes Havel Havelim.

I prefer the jcarnival scene to the jcompetition scene. In the carnivals, everyone's a winner. But in jibs, most are losers, or when you think of the true price, we're all losers.

What's the point of the competition, trying to make one's blog more valuable for advertising and money-making? Or is the the ego trip, one of the things we're warned to avoid in Pirkei Avot? Most probably a combination of the two.

Ploni says that Bagel Blogger's back, and I see that he's working on the blog, but every time I've tried to "visit," it causes my computer to freeze.

As we clean the chametz, the sourness, fermentation out of our homes, let's get the fermenting bitterness out of our jblog world.

Shabbat Shalom U'Mevorach!

Out of the loop, in the loop, jump through the loop

Rather lopsided, I'd say.

Well, after my panic searching for the jblogging bb's, yitz sent me in a good direction to a blog I hadn't heard of but I guess I ought to know now. It's Ploni Baloney.

There's all sorts of jblog news and whatever on it. All sorts of kvetches about the JIBS, those awards. Funny, I liked the rejected blog central ones. I actually did well in them. And I didn't cheat. Honestly, with blogs so ignored as mine, how could I?

Now, I still need to know what to do with this month's KCC, since the Baleboosteh was working on it, and I won't have time to do more than bare minimum. Pesach's coming.

Enough of this norishkeit. Bed time for me!

missing blogs--no joke

It seems like something has taken over the Bagel Blogger and Baleboosteh, jbloggers' premeir blogging couple. Commercial sites pop up instead of their blogs. They haven't been answering their mail either.

I was hoping that I'd find them back in jblogging business after Shabbat, but no change.

I'm not using their blog addresses in the post. There may be some sort of virus.

Bagel Blogger is known for his graphics and did the first two jpix carnivals, and the Baleboosteh was supposed to host the Kosher Cooking Carnival this week.

I'd appreciate any news of their health and that of their kids. I hope it's just a computer problem. Does anyone have any other way of contacting them or know the rabbi they consult with?

JPIX #3 Part 1

I just got back from babysitting for the grandchildren, that was after teaching. And I discovered that yahoo.mail isn't working, at least not on my computer. So I can't get to the final posts. G-d willing, things will return to "normal" tomorrow, and I'll post "part 2." It sort of reminds me of something that happened at work today. The secretary told me I'd be teaching my 12th grade class. "Karaguil," "As usual," she said. Well, they didn't show, which is "Karaguil" for the first lesson on Sundays. I hope that yahoo behaves better than my students.
As I told The Great Bagel Blogger, I'll do this "my way," since I don't have the computer photo savvy to do it any other way.

I must thank him for all his help!!

Let's see who can match the pictures to the blurbs. Of course, please understand that I couldn't post a picture from every link, just a few! Enjoy!

Winners, losers and visitors

IBA at the fair

Akiva sent me a notice about the latest JIBS Awards. Apparently, lots of jbloggers didn't like the recent ones for whatever reasons. As you can see from my sidebars, I did well in them; though I failed dismally in the original ones, the ones considered the more legitimate. So, call me "ambivalent."

Coming in dead last in all categories is a good reason to want to ignore them. I wasn't even nominated, to my knowledge, to the second year's competition. But if these jbloggers want to do it, I won't interfere.
