SDCC 2017: Telltale Has Updates on Batman, Walking Dead, and The Wolf Among Us 2

To kick off San Diego Comic-Con, Telltale Games had a triple announcement about three games, Batman: The Enemy Within, The Walking Dead: The Final Season, and The Wolf Among Us 2.

The publisher, alongside DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, today announced Batman: The Enemy Within – The Telltale Series, a new five-part, episodic game series that continues Telltale’s unique take on the Caped Crusader. Episode one, ‘The Enigma,’ will be available for download starting August 8th, 2017 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC and Mac, and will become available on iOS and Android-based devices later this year.

The series will also be available at retailers this October for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on a special ‘Season Pass Disc,’ which will include the first episode of the season, as well as download access to all subsequent episodes as they are released through an online connection.

In this latest chapter, both Bruce Wayne and Batman will be forced into precarious new roles. The Riddler has returned to terrorize Gotham City, but his gruesome puzzles merely foreshadow an even greater crisis. With the arrival of a ruthless federal agent and the return of a still nascent Joker, Batman must navigate uneasy alliances while Bruce Wayne undertakes a perilous series of deceptions. Which of Batman’s new allies will you choose to trust? And how deep into the darkness will you let Bruce descend?

This new season will be accessible to both returning fans and newcomers alike, though players’ choices from the first season of Batman: The Telltale Series will optionally carry over into The Enemy Within. This season will also include Telltale’s unique multiplayer ‘Crowd Play’ feature, which allows friends and family to engage with the adventure together by helping to decide the direction of the story from any mobile device with an online connection.

Rendered to look like a living, breathing comic book, Telltale’s vision of Batman features an award-winning cast of talent including Troy Baker, who returns to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne, as well as Anthony Ingruber, who will reprise his fresh take on ‘John Doe,’ better known to fans as The Joker.

The company, Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment, announced today that the critically acclaimed The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series – The Final Season (working title) is now in development to premiere in 2018.

In a series retrospective in celebration of Comic-Con through Telltale’s Summer 2017 Update, the development team at Telltale sat down to reflect on the journey of series protagonist ‘Clementine’ since the first episode premiered in April of 2012. In discussing the character’s path all the way through 2017’s conclusion of The Walking Dead: A New Frontier, Telltale confirmed that this fourth and final season would focus on Clementine in the lead role, allowing players to fully step back into the shoes of the fan favorite character.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season (working title) will debut in 2018 on consoles, PC/Mac, iOS and Android-based devices. Additional platforms are yet to be announced.

In partnership with DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the Telltale has announced a second season of The Wolf Among Us: A Telltale Games Series, the critically-acclaimed and award-winning episodic adventure game series based on Bill Willingham’s ‘Fables’ comic book series, is set to debut in 2018.

With overwhelming popular demand from fans since the series concluded in 2014, Telltale surprised their fans today in an announcement video from the cast and crew confirming that the project is coming in the year ahead. Though this new season has not yet been officially titled, it will debut in the second half of 2018 across all major gaming consoles and mobile gaming devices. This new season will begin a fresh story arc for its returning cast of characters, featuring the return of Adam Harringtonas Bigby Wolf and Erin Yvette as Snow White.

The second season of The Wolf Among Us: A Telltale Games Series will be a standalone product separate from season one and is licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The second season will be available for download on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android-based devices. Additional platforms are yet to be announced. The series is currently in development and has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

Win That War! Preview

Insane Unity’s Win That War! is, on paper, a “massively multiplayer retro sci-fi RTS crossover”. Normally for me, that’s just a bunch of meaningless SEO keywords that rarely get delivered on. This time, however, you get what it says on the tin.

Gameplay in Win That War! is an interesting mix of classic RTS elements with an almost 4X aspect. It plays like the love child of Blizzard’s Starcraft 2 and Sid Meier’s Civilization series or the Endless Legend or Endless Space games from Amplitude Studios. You click, you build, you wait, you attack, you retreat, you hopefully take out all the enemies bases and there’s no turns to worry about slowing down that high APM. At least, that’s how it worked out in quick play and it felt comparable in length to an SC2 match.

Controls are pretty intuitive and straightforward once you go through the tutorial and get a feel for how they function. As someone who is not great at RTS games, this felt good compared to SC2’s myriad of keyboard shortcuts and confusing menus and sub-menus. The tutorial does a very good job of teaching you how to access just about anything you’ll need in normal play.

I wasn’t able to take a look at two of the modes: the massively multiplayer “Galactic Campaign” and multiplayer matches. In the case of online multiplayer, there’s not a large enough player base yet to provide lobbies for play. There is also LAN and custom matches as an option. The Galactic Campaign is tied to non-custom online multiplayer in a similar way to For Honor’s faction wars but on a larger and longer scale. Insane Unity promises a large-scale experience with factions vying for control across multiple planets but it’s simply not an experience that can be judged yet. You can read more about the Galactic Conquest system from the source here.

It’s hard for games like this to really have a story and lore but Win That War! does a fair job of setting the scene fairly well. The 50s-esque vision of the future of planetary conquest is tempered by today’s knowledge. The earth tones with rounded corners and sleek UI all come together to make a fun and playful package that’s different from other games in the genre that have harsher and more pointed aesthetics. The UI and visual design work well together to give the mechanics of the game set dressing and purpose. In a game like this, they don’t need much else and that won’t affect your gameplay experience.

Final Verdict: great for RTS and SC2 fans especially; keep an eye out if this sounds like your jam. It’s still an unfinished game but it’s fairly far along in its development. Win That War! is available on Steam Early Access now for $19.99. Currently, there’s no For more info, check out the official site.

Carnage Joins Marvel Contest of Champions

Marvel Contest of Champions is welcoming Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage, into The Contest!

Cletus Kasady was a serial killer from Brooklyn, psychotic and depraved from an early age. As a cellmate of Eddie Brock’s, he bonded with a spawn of the Venom Symbiote during a prison break, and merged into a single twisted being. Kasady and the Symbiote would go on a killing spree, earning them their name: Carnage. With the Symbiote amplifying Kasady’s psychotic tendencies, there’s no telling how deep their acts of depravity will plunge.

Special Moves:

  • Special 1: Frenzied Assault – Carnage hurls himself at his opponent, rending with limbs and tentacles alike. This attack receives +998.5 additional Critical Rate.
  • Special 2: Rabid Onslaught – Carnage uses his tentacles to suddenly propel himself towards his target while he strikes with his claws. This attack receives +1529.33 Critical Damage Rating.
  • Special 3: Aberrant Soul – Carnage uses his tentacles to pin his opponent in place, allowing him take the time to revel in the carnage he creates. 100% chance to cause the Opponent to Bleed, dealing 3671.25 direct damage over 20 seconds.

SIGNATURE ABILITY – BLOODLUST

  • The sight and smell of blood triggers Carnage’s bloodlust, granting him up to +19.99% increased Power Gain, while his Opponent is Bleeding.
  • The longer the Opponent has been continuously Bleeding the greater the bonus, reaching the maximum after 20 seconds.

Strong Match-Ups

  • Howard the Duck
    • Howard’s defences are based heavily around his Armor Up effects, and Carnage’s Bleeds don’t care about that armor at all! And if Howard survives long enough for his Armor Ups begin to fall off, Carnage will be gaining more and more Buffs.
  • Black Widow
    • Ironically in this matchup, Black Widow’s Signature Ability can actually benefit Carnage, as its Ability Accuracy Reduction can prevent him from swapping his passives. This makes it easier to avoid swapping to a defensive Passive effect, just before converting to a permanent Buff.
  • Electro
    • Carnage focuses on doing big damage with his Bleed effects. Since Electro does damage back based on your hits to him, Carnage can minimize the amount of damage returned to him due to the Bleed.

Weak Match-Ups

  • Doctor Strange
    • Doctor Strange has all sorts of Nullify to ruin Carnage’s day. Counterspell has a chance to remove Carnage’s permanent Buffs as they are applied, and his Special 2 can remove them after they’ve been applied as well.
  • Ronan
    • Ronan loves to go up against Champions who have a lot of Buffs and guess what Carnage has? There’s pretty much two ways to play this match-up. Either go all in, build up your Buffs and don’t get hit, or limit your Buffs by limiting your Special Attacks, focus on building to Special 3, and ride that Bleed.
  • Doctor Voodoo
    • There are so many ways for Doctor Voodoo to be dangerous to Carnage. If damage is his goal, his Special 1 can convert all those Buffs to Poison; so suppress a powerful Carnage his Signature Ability has a chance to prevent the Passive from converting to a Buff, or he can just Power Drain Carnage to prevent him from throwing enough Special Attacks to stack many Buffs.
