Knight Models Releases a Bat-Mite Gen Con 2017 Exclusive

Gen Con is not too far in the future with the “best four days of gaming” taking place August 17 to August 20 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Knight Models has revealed a convention exclusive… Bat-Mite which will be playable in both their DC Universe Miniature Game and Batman Miniature Game.

The strictly limited edition miniature will only be available at Gen Con 2017, so get it while it’s hot! The game company hasn’t yet said which booths will be selling the figure.

Gen Con Sells Out of 4-Day Badges

Gen Con has announced a sellout of 4-Day badges for Gen Con 50, its historic 50th convention to be held August 17-20. Sales of single-day badges (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Family Fun) will continue, though supplies are limited. The company urges those interested in attending to purchase these badges soon, as single-day badges also are expected to reach a sellout.

Due to these expected sellouts, Gen Con will not offer on-site badge sales at Gen Con 50. Any remaining attendee-type badges will be available for sale with will call pick-up. As in prior years, Gen Con will offer 24-hour will call, starting at noon on Wednesday, August 16 and staying open throughout the entire convention. The will call area also will expand to expedite the packet pick-up process.

Family Fun Day, held on Sunday, August 20, allows a family of four to attend for $45. Children ages 8-and-under are free to attend any day of Gen Con with a child wristband.

Gen Con has capped Trade Day and some individual badge types previously in Indianapolis, but has never limited its 4-Day or single-day badge sales.

Gen Con 50 will take place August 17-20, 2017 in the Indiana Convention Center, Lucas Oil Stadium, and participating hotels. The convention will feature more than 500 exhibitors, more than 19,000 events, and an exclusive concert from Grammy Award-winning recording artist They Might Be Giants.

Super Hero Diversity Alive And Well In New Role Playing Game Superhero 2044

Checker Book Publishing Group has made known that with all of the recent controversy surrounding diverse super hero universe, one group of very diverse heroes has found a home. Contrary to large comic book publishing conglomerates stating ‘diversity is dead’ a new role playing game based on super heroes has seen nothing but positive reviews upon playtesting the various characters with divers backgrounds and motivations.

Super Hero 2044 features such classic characters as the African American legend John Henry as well as the Hispanic hero Fantomas who steals for the rich to aid the poor.

Super Hero 2044 is a comic book themed role playing game originally published in 1977 with a substantial upgrade to the game being launched on Kickstarter in August of 2017.

Win That War! Preview

Insane Unity’s Win That War! is, on paper, a “massively multiplayer retro sci-fi RTS crossover”. Normally for me, that’s just a bunch of meaningless SEO keywords that rarely get delivered on. This time, however, you get what it says on the tin.

Gameplay in Win That War! is an interesting mix of classic RTS elements with an almost 4X aspect. It plays like the love child of Blizzard’s Starcraft 2 and Sid Meier’s Civilization series or the Endless Legend or Endless Space games from Amplitude Studios. You click, you build, you wait, you attack, you retreat, you hopefully take out all the enemies bases and there’s no turns to worry about slowing down that high APM. At least, that’s how it worked out in quick play and it felt comparable in length to an SC2 match.

Controls are pretty intuitive and straightforward once you go through the tutorial and get a feel for how they function. As someone who is not great at RTS games, this felt good compared to SC2’s myriad of keyboard shortcuts and confusing menus and sub-menus. The tutorial does a very good job of teaching you how to access just about anything you’ll need in normal play.

I wasn’t able to take a look at two of the modes: the massively multiplayer “Galactic Campaign” and multiplayer matches. In the case of online multiplayer, there’s not a large enough player base yet to provide lobbies for play. There is also LAN and custom matches as an option. The Galactic Campaign is tied to non-custom online multiplayer in a similar way to For Honor’s faction wars but on a larger and longer scale. Insane Unity promises a large-scale experience with factions vying for control across multiple planets but it’s simply not an experience that can be judged yet. You can read more about the Galactic Conquest system from the source here.

WinThatWar-concept-excavator

It’s hard for games like this to really have a story and lore but Win That War! does a fair job of setting the scene fairly well. The 50s-esque vision of the future of planetary conquest is tempered by today’s knowledge. The earth tones with rounded corners and sleek UI all come together to make a fun and playful package that’s different from other games in the genre that have harsher and more pointed aesthetics. The UI and visual design work well together to give the mechanics of the game set dressing and purpose. In a game like this, they don’t need much else and that won’t affect your gameplay experience.

Final Verdict: great for RTS and SC2 fans especially; keep an eye out if this sounds like your jam. It’s still an unfinished game but it’s fairly far along in its development. Win That War! is available on Steam Early Access now for $19.99. Currently, there’s no For more info, check out the official site.

The Fantastic Four Returns…. to Marvel Legendary from Upper Deck

For years now there’s been persistent rumors there’s been a ban/lower prioritization of the Fantastic Four and X-Men from Marvel due to their movie ownership at Fox. No actual evidence has been presented, just conspiratorial connect the dots that ignore the creation of new X-Men characters, the licensed material that does get released, and use of some of the Fantastic Four characters in the comics themselves. While it is clear “something” was up, exactly what isn’t beyond a “deemphasis.”

Part of the fuel to the fire was the discontinuation of the Marvel Legendary: Fantastic Four expansion by Upper Deck for their popular deck-building game.

As reported by ICv2, Upper Deck Senior Brand Manager Jason Brenner has said that the “company has been authorized to immediately go back to press on a new printing of the product, which will be available in six to eight weeks.”

The expansion was originally released in the fourth quarter of 2013 and went out of print due to a “licensor-controlled issue.” This out of print status has led the expansion to be covetted and the aftermarket price to incease over 10x. Originally retailing for $19.99, expansions are being sold for over $300.

Three out of the four of the Fantastic Four appeared in the first Dice Masters set, Avengers vs. X-Men by WizKids released in 2014. They haven’t appeared in the game since. The Thing was one of the releases for Knight Models’ Marvel Universe Miniature Game and was released last year.

Can the team’s return to comics be far behind?

A First Look at Marvel Dice Masters: X-Men First Class

WizKids has released a first look at WizKids‘ Dice Masters set, Marvel Dice Masters: X-Men First Class. This September, the set brings more mutants to the tabletop for Dice Masters action. The 124-card expansion features multiple rosters of X-Men, the Exiles, and the Brotherhood of Mutants.

The X-Men have been featured in numerous sets either as the main focus or as teams within. Sets with a primary focus on X-men include Avengers vs. X-Men, Deadpool, and Uncanny X-Men

The set is focused on spinning character dice up and down to manipulate abilities and strength. There’s also new keywords:

Awaken – lets you damage your opponent, reroll opposing characters, or get an attack boost by spinning up to a higher level.

Professor X: Peaceful Coexistence allows players to spin all X-Men-affiliated dice up one level at the start of their turn. Cyclops and Iceman both have the Awaken keyword. Cyclops: Boy Scout may deal three damage to a target character when his character die is spun up, while Iceman: Cold Hands, Warm Heart doubles his attack value.

Thunderbird: Warrior of the Apache will allow you to spin up all your characters when he’s KO’d. If Sunfire: Moeagaru! is also on your team, his Awaken ability will activate giving him +1A and +1D. Storm: Misspent Youth allows a player to prep a die from their bag whenever a Storm die spins up a level.

Infiltrate – lets you deal direct damage with “while active” abilities.

Magneto: The House of M grants all Brotherhood characters the keyword. Blob: Appetite for Destruction has the ability to prevent an opponent from both purchasing and fielding dice from a chosen card, and Scarlet Witch: Careful What You Wish For can force an opponent to twice roll an Action face before they can use it.

But Infiltrate isn’t just for the Brotherhood, the Exiles have it too.

Blink: Unhinged from Reality gains Infiltrate whenever a player uses an Action die. Mimic: Borrowed Talent allows a player to copy the A and D of a character and Prep two dice anytime that character is fielded, while Morph: Change of Heart can use the effects of a Basic Action Card while attacking.

The set also sees the debut of Thunderbird, Sunfire, Banshee, Doop, Onslaught, Boom Boom, Jubilee, and more!

Checker Book Publishing Group Announces Acquisition Of Superhero 2044 Rights

Checker Book Publishing Group has announced that it has purchased the publishing rights to the classic super hero themed role playing game Superhero 2044 from Gamescience Publishing.

Superhero 2044 was the first commercially available superhero-themed role playing game at the dawn of the industry appearing in 1977 shortly after the explosive launch of early games like Dungeons and Dragons and Runequest. Innovative for the time period it featured such specific rules as classifications for differing types of super heroes, melee rules unique to super heroes, a ranged combat system,  point based character construction, and eventually a comprehensive defined list of super powers.

Checker Book Publishing Group is a graphic novel publisher that published nearly one hundred graphic novels from 2001 to 2013. Checker BPG launched titles with such high profile licenses as Star Trek, X-Files, Flash Gordon, and Clive Barker to name a few.  The publisher put the company on hiatus after the death of his fiancé, father, uncle, and the cancer diagnosis of his sister in 2015.

Industry legend Lou Zocchi, who guided the birth of the game, will continue to serve as an advisor on the game.

The company plans a Kickstarter program to launch the newly revamped role playing games as well as a Super Hero 2044 themed card game
