The PAGES (Past Global Changes) project is an international effort to coordinate and promote past global change research. The primary objective is to improve our understanding of past changes in the Earth system in order to improve projections of future climate and environment, and inform strategies for sustainability. ... more

PAGES is open and inclusive to all scientists interested in past global changes. In February 2017, PAGES' parent organization Future Earth published a statement affirming its commitment to supporting international collaboration and the free movement of scientists and flow of data, information and knowledge for global sustainability. PAGES fully supports the Future Earth statement.

PAGES is funded by the US National Science Foundation and the Swiss Academy of Sciences, and supported in-kind by the University of Bern, Switzerland. It is a Global Research Project of Future Earth and a scientific partner of WCRP.

Five new 2k articles accepted

Five new papers have been accepted to the PAGES 2k Network phase two synthesis Climate of the Past special issue.

PAGES at EGU 2018

The General Assembly 2018 of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) takes place in Vienna, Austria, from 8-13 April 2018.

We encourage you to submit an abstract to one of the many PAGES sessions. The deadline for financial support applications is 1 December 2017 and the abstract deadline is 10 January 2018.

VICS & LandCover6k products

Earlier this week, VICS working group members Matthew Toohey and Michael Sigl had their paper "Volcanic stratospheric sulfur injections and aerosol optical depth from 500 BCE to 1900 CE" published in Earth System Science Data.

This new volcanic reconstruction, describing the new eVolv2k volcanic forcing database for the past 2500 years, is based on improved ice-core records and reconstruction methodologies.

Avid reader to active coordinator

Scott St George web PAGES' current guest scientist Dr. Scott St. George can't quite believe he's progressed from reading the PAGES Newsletter (now the Past Global Changes Magazine) to being a working group coordinator.

"Since the beginning of my graduate career, PAGES has been there," St. George said. "My supervisor Brian Luckman was always leaving the PAGES Newsletter in the lab and it was the first time I had the idea that my work was connected to broader initiatives. And 20 years later, I'm supposed to be coordinating things!"

The native of Winnipeg, Canada, is now an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography, Environment and Society at the University of Minnesota, USA, plus coordinator of the PAGES 2k Network and a scientific committee member of the Floods Working Group (FWG).

Media interest in VICS paper

This week's VICS working group paper "Volcanic suppression of Nile summer flooding triggers revolt and constrains interstate conflict in ancient Egypt", published in Nature Communications, is attracting worldwide media attention.

Authors Joseph Manning, Francis Ludlow, Alexander Stine, William Boos, Michael Sigl and Jennifer Marlon show that the lack of critically important summer flooding in Ptolemaic Egypt (305–30 BCE) correlates with volcanic eruptions, leading to societal unrest.
