PAGES is calling for applications from scientists to serve on its Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) from January 2018.

PAGES' PALSEA2 working group recently published a paper in Quaternary Science Reviews which uses foraminifera preserved in new and existing cores of dated salt-marsh sediment.
Andrew Kemp et al. produced ∼3000-year long relative sea-level (RSL) histories for two sites in North Carolina (USA) and propose that a period of accelerating RSL rise from ∼600 CE to 1100 CE, which differs between the two sites, is a local-to regional-scale effect of dynamic ocean and/or atmospheric circulation.

Members of the PAGES-PMIP Working Group on Quaternary Interglacials (QUIGS) published their findings on how astronomical forces lead to interglacials in Nature yesterday.
"A simple rule to determine which insolation cycles lead to interglacials", written by Chronis Tzedakis et al., discusses the use of a statistical model that correctly predicts every complete deglaciation of the past million years. They propose that the appearance of larger ice sheets was a consequence of an increase in the deglaciation threshold and in the number of skipped insolation peaks.

SISAL (Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and AnaLysis) is a new PAGES working group which brings together speleothem scientists, speleothem-process modelers, statisticians and climate modelers to develop a global synthesis of speleothem isotopes that can be used both to explore past climate changes and in model evaluation.
Some of SISAL's key goals are to identify the current status of speleothem-based paleoclimate reconstructions globally and to initiate the compilation of raw data and metadata needed to create a publicly available global database of speleothem δ18O and δ13C records.

The deadline for early registration for PAGES 5th Open Science Meeting, to be held in Zaragoza, Spain, from 9-13 May 2017, has been extended to 1 March.
This deadline also applies to registration for participation in any field trips.
The theme for both the OSM and associated 3rd Young Scientists Meeting (Morillo de Tou, Spain, 7-9 May 2017) is Global Challenges for our Common Future: a paleoscience perspective.
These meetings will fully reflect PAGES' structure and themes of climate, environment and humans, the strengthening of the connections between PAGES' working groups and the increasing importance of an interdisciplinary approach.
