We have a couple of "high-end" artist supply stores around NYC so I was able to get it there. They might do mail order or find that finer-arts store by you. I had also thought maybe using photography/stage light filter gel materials but they were costly. There is also https://www.canalplastic.com/ and another store down the block that stocks thin plastic sheets good for light diffusion and stuff. The old timey hardware stores around here stock various patterns of sheet plastic to use from covering couches, tablecloths or carpet runners. The shelf liner rolls from IKEA have possibilities if you need a super tough flexible plastic.

Maybe priming the plywood mounting surface and letting that dry first would help reduce the wet component when adhering.

I recall watching a documentary on German apprenticeships. It may have been on the educational or vocational training system that exists there. They highlighted someone working in a machine shop and said they give you a bar of metal and spend days and days getting it to perfect size or shape. I think it was to reinforce the idea of precision and fine craftsmanship found in German engineering. Anyway, when I had wood shop in high school, we were graded on how perfect you can plane a chamfer or beveled edge along a big piece of wood while trying not to whittle down the dimensions of the board. And that's how you get to Carnegie Hall.

- caitlinsdad commented on Elisa Martinez's forum topic How to harden cardboard5 months agoView Topic »
Just glue on several more layers of cardboard so you have a thick lamination. If you have a 3D shape with hollow insides, just glue in lots of cardboard partitions to act as braces and support for the outside "box" or shell. You can coat all over with glue to finish it off. If you really want to do the work, you can paper mache your base letter form and give it a few days to harden up when it completely dries. Good luck.
- caitlinsdad commented on BacharH's forum topic Guitar amp doesnt play sound in headphones when pluged in.5 months agoView Topic »
The AUX IN jack is used to plug in the audio cable from something like an mp3 player or some other sound source so you can play your instrument along with the music. It is a smaller 1/8th inch audio jack. No sound comes out of it.The bigger headphones jack is used for headphones with 1/4 inch standard stereo/mono plug which is the same as your guitar cable. Most good headphones will have the 1/4 inch plug and you use an adapter to get it to fit into the smaller 1/8th inch audio jack which fits most earbuds and such like you find on the computer.Your amp headphone jack is probably working. You are not connecting correctly to it. Good luck.

They can but you have to add on a little bit of circuitry to amplify or trim out the electronic signal from a piezo element to be suitable for feeding into an arduino or microcontroller. If you are thinking any kind of drum project, look up "knock sensor arduino" to give you the basics. A piezo buzzer can be used as sort of a reverse microphone.

- caitlinsdad commented on ElectroSoja's forum topic Electr'Ocarina of Time6 months agoView Topic »
For prototyping, use this as the base https://www.adafruit.com/product/2133 - you can make it a custom 11 note ocarina. Music synthesis to get good or more realistic sounds is tough to do with a basic arduino. It lacks the processing power and you usually only end up with beep like tones. Raspberry pi is probably more suited for sample playback vs arduino and a whole bunch of add on shields. The audio FX board is monophonic - press one note, get one sound. You would probably move on to more complicated hardware for polyphonic - more than one note at a time to sound chords. Good luck.

- caitlinsdad commented on Art_Rob's forum topic Need help to spec a microcontroller. 6 months agoView Topic »
Unless you are some kind of electrical engineer, you really wouldn't attempt to start designing circuit boards off the bat and program bare chips. The Atmel atmega 328 chips are the basis of the arduino ecosystem. Arduino engineered the fun and ease into programming and using boards/accessory peripherals that have those microcontrollers. When you need more processing power or capability you move on to those boards containing the ATSAMD21 or Cortex M0 or full blown microcontroller chips for something like raspberry pi.All of Adafruit's boards and similar are open-source so you can start from those designs as a basis for a new one.
- caitlinsdad commented on Art_Rob's forum topic Need help to spec a microcontroller. 6 months agoView Topic »
Look into the Adafruit Feather line of arduino boards. It has the add on display that should be suitable. https://www.adafruit.com/product/2900?gclid=CP7eqO... You can add other sensors/boards/wifi-bluetooth etc later on if your project needs it.For your application, it is capable of being a HID device - meaning it can be used as a keyboard - with limited board pinouts for each switch, easiest thing to do is hack a usb keyboard and use those built-in key switches/hardware as your set of 20 to 101+ switch inputs. There are a lot of tutorials and instructables already done on that. Good luck.

Get a longer saddle clamp or a long piece of pipe section that fits on the tube to splice the joint. That will keep the joint from flexing. The EMT fitting is meant to just connect two pieces.

- caitlinsdad commented on elkaddalek's forum topic Paint Plastic To Copper Tubing7 months agoView Topic »
The trick is to have a primer coat to act as the barrier for your solvent paints. You can get a spray paint primer made for plastics(another expensive can of paint) but you can just coat your plastic tubing with craft glue. Smear on several thin coats of glue and let them dry, cracks and shrinkage will be covered by the next coat. First coat will be sparse. Do the glue after you have formed your coil. The dried glue coating is somewhat flexible but can't stretch too much. Instead of using glue you can give it a few primer coats of acrylic craft/latex paint or coat with some acrylic/latex caulking. You can then use your spray paint over the dried primer coating. Good luck.

View Instructable »Look at the Adafruit neopixel uberguide tutorial to get things connected. https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-neopixel-uberg...This setup is only a small strip that sits behind the name badge and connected to the arduino on its own pin. A longer strip that runs from the base into the bottle is connected on a separate arduino pin. Arduino.cc has tutorials on how to wire up a simple switch to one of the data pins. You can have a resistor that you wire in or use the internal pullup setting to work. Good luck.

This one is all dry and only uses a plastic magnifying glass or lens to simulate the look of peering into the bottom of a glass or plastic chamber. I did have a multi-pack of coin cells cheap off the auction site so I think I ran through a few since they didn't last too long.
