Thank you to all our guests who have joined us and will be joining us, and thanks to all of you who have asked amazing questions, started great conversations, and shared these posts with your friends.
You may know me from SNL, where I was one of the longest-running cast members and originated such characters as Leon Phelps, 'The Ladies Man.' You may also know me as Principal Duvall from "Mean Girls," Principal Glascott on "The Goldbergs," Mike the Mailman on "Bob's Burgers," Caleb on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and many more. You can currently see me as Detective Judd Tolbeck, a low level cop in the San Diego Police Department, in the comedy series "No Activity," which is now streaming on CBS All Access.

My name is Diane Menio and I’m the executive director of CARIE (Center for Advocacy for the Rights and Interests of the Elderly). In Pennsylvania, 46 residents died from care-related problems in nursing homes between 2013 and 2015 and a third of Pennsylvania nursing homes were dangerously understaffed in 2015. I’m working with PennLive.com to share some tips on how to ensure your elderly loved ones get the best care possible and how to plan for their needs. I’ll be here from noon-1 p.m. EST to answer any questions you might have about elder care.
I am a comedian and producer, travel enthusiast, and tequila drinker and I like to create projects that encourage conversation. I’m also the co-founder of film and tv incubator, Big Vision Empty Wallet. My new show, ADULT SEX ED, combines personal storytelling from a diverse roster of guests and exploratory deep dives on sexual topics in a hilarious and inclusive setting. America’s failure to provide accurate sex education in schools is comedy’s gain.

Thank you all for an amazing marathon session. There is some really good dialog and information within this thread for any latecomers. All up with matched funding we have managed to raise almost US$25,000. This will go towards expanding our operations and hiring more rangers. Thank you all so much. From Zimbabwe, signing out, Damien
I began my career in the Australian Royal Navy and later worked as a special operations sniper in the Australian Defense Force. I then moved on to the private sector in Iraq, where I was training men who, faced with the harsh reality of the front line, would either desert, join the militia or be killed.
On a trip to Southern Africa, I was shocked at the continuous slaughter of rhinos and elephants. Populations of these beautiful animals were suffering a 40% loss, mostly due to poaching for illegal ivory trade.
Inspired by this I founded the International Anti-Poaching Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to defending at-risk wildlife.
Back in 2014, thanks to your help we made history with an AMA. We raised money to support the front lines of the war against Rhino poaching.
This was along the South African/Mozambique border, where a third of the worlds rhino’s live. In the coming months, we were able to reduce incursions of rhino poachers through our area of operation and into the largest rhino population on earth by over 90%.
A great joint effort which we are, and you should be proud of. Thank you.
While this was an invaluable weapon in our battle, a direct war on poaching is only part of the equation needed to help protect these endangered species in the longterm.
In order to sustain conservation efforts successfully, you need to win the hearts and minds of the local community.
This realization led us to create a very special project: Akashinga…
Akashinga (meaning the ‘Brave Ones’) is an all-female ranger unit patrolling, conducting raids and arrests on known poachers, and helping to protect an area of 230,000 acres. They work with the local community to prevent wildlife crime, and watch over the growing wildlife populations of the lower Zambezi region of Zimbabwe.
You can find out more about how the Akashinga team did this in this Imgur album.
But here’s what’s even more incredible about Akashinga’s members...
All the ranger women have troubled pasts. They were all either survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, single mothers, abandoned wives, or are AIDS orphans.
These women are heroes, and have been recognized as such by the Zimbabwe International Women’s Awards 2018 and celebrated on 60 Minutes and BBC World News.
We need to hire more women and create a new task force to patrol this reserve! (You guys can name it!) We have several donors willing to match your donations up to $35,000 during this AMA to make this task force happen!
If you’re able to donate $25 or more to help these incredible women protect these beautiful endangered animals, we’ll send you a pack of these sweet limited edition IAPF/Reddit stickers as a token of thanks for your support.
You can donate here: https://www.iapf.org/reddit/
More importantly, you’ll also know that your generosity has helped make a difference to both a community of women fighting to regain their independence and dignity, and also to the rhinos and elephants who are being illegally poached.
For our AMA today I will be joined by Nyaradzo Hoto. Nyaradzo helps lead Akashinga operations. She is a divorced 26-year old woman from Hurungwe. She has a 6-year old daughter, Tariro.
“My marriage was so difficult for me because my former husband was so abusive. I was jobless for a long time, life was so tough. I started working last year in August as a ranger of Akashinga and have managed to turn my life around.”
You can read more about Nyaradzo and about the Akashinga project here.
We choose today, Giving Tuesday, to do our AMA with you guys.
P.S. You can also donate with crypto :)
Now, go ahead and ask me or Nyaradzo anything! Last time it was a super fun 6 hours and I’m ready for some awesome fun together again.

I am a trainer for the US Navy's Marine Mammal Program. I commented on a post a few weeks ago and got several PMs asking to do an AMA about my job, so here we are. Obviously a lot of details of the program are still classified/sensitive since it is ongoing, but I'll do my best to answer what I can.
The Navy has used marine mammals since around the 60s, and the program was declassified in the 90s. The Navy explored the use of many species over the decades from sharks, turtles, rays, birds, and various mammals, but today only 2 species are used - the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and California sea lion (Zalophus californianus). There's 3 programs that the animals are used in - mine hunting, object recovery, and swimmer interdiction.

x3Hello everyone. In conjuction with Giving Tuesday my wife and I have decided to hold our second AMA. Our daughter Lily was born with a rare genetic condition called Zellweger Syndrome. The condition left her blind, mentally retarded, and epileptic. My wife and I became fulltime caregivers for almost five months until Lily ultimately passed.
In Lily's honor my wife and I founded a Non-profit organization named "Lily's List". Our mission is to assist parents and caregivers as they transition home from the hospital. We accomplish this by providing small items that insurance often won't pay for. Our "love boxes" make the caregiver's day a little bit more organized and hopefully easier. Below are only a few of the items we include:
Specialized surge protector for the numerous monitors and medical equipment
A whiteboard for tracking medications, seizures, and emergency data
A wall organizer for random medical equipment
Cord wraps for easy transportation
Taylor and I are happy to answer any questions regarding our experience or Lily's List. No question is off limits. Please do not hold back.

Edit: Taylor and I are going to sleep now but please continue to ask questions. We will get back at them tomorrow. :) Thank you everyone for your support!
This is a verified live event and will run at least a week.
Update: We are both signing off for the day. Thank you for all your questions.
Frank arrived in London in June 2016. A week later, Britain voted to leave the European Union. The two of us have been covering developments in this ongoing story ever since. You can find all of Frank’s NPR coverage here. Follow Frank on Twitter and Instagram and Sam on Twitter.
The latest: Prime Minister Theresa May is racing to get a deal for the U.K. to leave the EU without her government turning against her. The European Union OK’d the draft deal, but it faces a hostile U.K. Parliament, where British politicians are united in their hatred for the tentative agreement. May is expected to present the deal to Parliament in mid-December.
I’m Elroy Vojdani, MD – a licensed medical doctor and pioneer in functional medicine. I began practicing medicine as an Interventional Radiologist, but my desire to prevent disease from becoming a chronic illness remained at the core of my aspiration to practice medicine. I am known for combining my medical training and knowledge with state-of-the-art lab testing and scientifically proven methods to accurately diagnose and treat serious, life-threatening conditions that many of my patients have struggled with for years. I recently conducted groundbreaking research on the causes of Alzheimer’s Disease, which was published in three different medical publications, including the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. Our research evaluated different variables that form plaque in the brain, which ultimately leads to the disease currently affecting 5.7 million Americans. Our scientific team examined infection, environment and gut/food - proving that lifestyle changes and supplementation can greatly delay or avoid the disease. I also helped develop a group of blood tests that will assist medical professionals with helping patients to delay or even prevent Alzheimer’s. While I can’t give specific medical advice to you on the Internet, I look forward to answering your questions. Ask Me Anything!

My name is Sagine Fleurisma, I’m 23 years old and I live in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. I studied hospitality and tourism and I am passionate about photography, art and travel. I am also an activist and member of several social movements (Scout, CACH, Active Citizens Program to build Haiti and YAP, program of young ambassadors) and I also like computer science.
I am the founder of www.kozeannou.top, a site selling memorable gifts, personalized and containing famous pets quotes .
A little more about me
I learned everything about craftsmanship after the violent earthquake that devastated Haiti in 2010 after joining different groups of young people and learning to work with crochet, macramé, decoration and during which I also experimented several other craft techniques.
At first, I was just interested in modeling and stylistics until I discovered computer science and became a fan. After giving up my desires for my first two activities, I started freelancing on Upwork until I wanted to create my own websites.
I then founded Kozeannou, which I launched this year and which specializes in pet pillows and pet quotes (clothes, canvases, pillows). Founded in memory of my two furry friends (Minou and Pinky), whom I had when I was little. one died crushed by a car and the other disappeared during the end of the year holidays in 2013.

My short bio:
I was diagnosed this last summer to having Klinefelter's Syndrome (47XXY) through a routine blood check and subsequent chromosome test. I grew up 36 years, and never crossed my or my parents' minds about this. However, I never grew facial hair or body hair (other than slight hair growth on my pubic area), developed C cup breasts (which turned out to have fully developed mammary glands), which was nerve wrecking in my adolescence.
My body produces almost zero testosterone, which caused my body to never go through male puberty fully, and thus have a much higher voice than many other men. I am married, and my wife always complains to me that I can sing at a higher octave than she can.
I saw that the last post here about Klinefelter's was several years ago, and wanted to do an AMA to keep everyone who may not know about this informed, and hopefully engage with those that suspect something similar.

Hi Reddit! I’m Dr. Pamela Peeke, and I’m here to talk about the intersection of health, science and nutrition, and specifically, the science behind fasting and other developments in the field of nutrition.
For those who aren’t familiar, the new science of fasting (often referred to as “intermittent fasting”) involves nourishing with whole foods, and then spending variable times in the non-feeding state. When you eat, glucose is stored in your liver as glycogen, which takes 6+ hours to be depleted. Once the glycogen is used up, your body switches from glucose to fat as a source of fuel. When this happens, fat is broken down into ketones which means a person is now in a state of ketosis. Once in a state of ketosis, cellular housekeeping, call autophagy, can begin its essential role in removing dying cells and debris from the body. The problem with contemporary living is that people eat 24/7 and never allow themselves to convert to fat metabolism or even autophagy.
Research shows that when you are able to achieve an optimal amount of time for autophagy, there are many health benefits, including reduced body fat, enhanced immune function, improved cognitive function and more. The best results occur when the body is getting all the necessary nutrients, and since no one’s diet is 100% perfect, supplements can play an important role in the success of intermittent fasting.
A bit more about me: I’m an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland, a Pew Foundation Scholar in nutrition and metabolism and hold dual master’s degrees in public health and policy. I am a fellow of both the American College of Physicians as well as the American College of Sports Medicine, and was the first senior research fellow at the National Institutes of Health Office of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. I’m also on the Scientific Advisory Board for SmartyPants Vitamins, helping make sure their supplements are using the best science and latest research.
As a physician who is also a nutrition specialist, I regard nutrition as integral to health, longevity, and prevention of disease – Ask Me Anything! I’ll be back at 3 pm EST to answer your questions. PROOF https://cfmedicine.nlm.nih.gov/physicians/biography_249.html
Hey there! Thanks for your great comments and discussion. It was a terrific pleasure to participate in this forum!

Hey everyone, I was born with Duchenne Muscular and have had to overcome many challenges. Most people don't feel comfortable asking about disabilities even though they might be curious and just assume things. My goal is to change that mentality. I figured doing this will reach people.

Hi Reddit,
great to be back! We did our last iAmA three years ago during our crowdfunding.
We were of course late with delivery, but testing the blackness of the final product against other materials marketed as being ultra black, we found that we in fact offer the blackest material which is publicly available (and not a hole in a box).
Here is a video of me measuring it.
And here is the final ViperblackTM shirt, modelled by one of the Vantablack engineers.
So hit me with questions about the technology behind it, our soul crushing endevour teaching us that hardware is indeed hard, or if we are planning to do a tactileneck.

Ok, I'm back with a cup of very black coffee. Ready to answer your questions
Not really sure how to prove all of these, but I think I still have my temple recommend so I'll grab that later (kids are asleep right now and also I'm lazy), but here's a picture on my wedding day outside of the temple we got married in, this is a poster from a comedy show I did, and here is a link to my Tiny House Nation article (you have to buy the episode, but please don't watch it, I was so pregnant and so cringy and mormon.)
Ex-Mormon: I converted to the religion at 14 when my narcissistic mother married an inactive member (my step dad, a truly wonderful human being and the only member of my family I still talk to). We were baptized at the same time and I hated everything about it. I went to seminary all through high school (bribed with an iPod Nano, anyone remember those??) then went to BYU to pursue my college education. I remember thinking the first day I got there, "It's raining, why the hell is everyone smiling and/or balding?" I met my ex-husband at the apartment complex we both lived in and we got married after a year of dating in the Manti, Utah temple. It was a truly beautiful building and I'm glad I got to see it. We were married for 5ish years and had two amazing kids together. I was at my Bishop's office being "called" (assigned) a high position in the women's organization of the church, a Relief Society First Counselor, while my husband was at home reading the CES letter (an 84-page publication that challenges the claims of the LDS church). When I came home, he told me he was having doubts and wanted to leave. I never felt like I fit in with the church, but this information terrified me because we had kids and I had been told that I needed to provide a worthy father for my children. Around the time of the election, I started seeing my own doubts as well and we left together. About 6 months later, we divorced.
Tiny House: We began built a tiny house together and applied to the FYI network TV show Tiny House Nation and got on! It was super fun to film and we got a ton of free supplies for our house. We lived in it for about a year, but could only legally park in RV parks. The one we chose (oddly enough, ended up next to the tiny house owners who filmed their episode right after ours) was too far away from my kids' school and my University. We decided to move into student housing on campus for ease of commute.
Comedy: I've been doing standup for about a year and a half now. Most recently, I bombed at an apartment complex show, but my greatest accomplishment was performing to a sold out show of 400 people at the Mesa Theater Grand Junction, Colorado. It was the best set I've ever done and one of my favorite life experiences. I stumbled upon an open mic one night when I went out after the kids went to bed. My ex and I were separated, but still living in the same house until we figured out a plan. I would leave in the evenings because we had only recently moved in and didn't have furniture. The open mic was ok, but the host said anyone could do it. So I got a set together and went the next week. Didn't do terrible, but not great either. Then I just...never stopped.
So now I'm a single mom of 2 working my first real job and excelling, moving up in the comedy scene, and wondering what the hell to do with my life. Suggestions are welcome.
Edit: I’m going to thanksgiving dinner now ( got a pie) so I’ll answer the rest later. Thanks for all the questions guys!
Edit 2: since people keep asking and I posted my the link to my own profile LIKE AN IDIOT the first time, here’s the link to my next show. It would be so cool to meet some reddit people! Please don’t tell everyone I suck: https://www.facebook.com/events/380978709110309/?ti=ia
Edit 3: this one has been asked a lot, some kindly, some not so much. Why do I specify ex Mormon when people don’t say ex-catholic etc? For reference, take a look at the amount of questions people have had on this post about the religion and why I left. It seems like something people are curious about and it’s a big part of my life, so I thought I’d include it. Since the Mormon church is viewed as kind of “cult-y,” I think it’s more comparable to when people say they’re ex-polygamists or left the Amish community. And lastly, it’s not like that’s how I introduce myself, this was strictly for AMA purposes. Chill, my dudes.
