It's not just about the cabinet or v senior posts. It's about creating a pipeline of talent and my point simply is that realists may have totally missed one of their best ever opportunities w/ Obama. The blame for that does not lie with the establishment.

I go back to my hypothetical-- do you think realists should have invited to MIT or Harvard or Chicago to meet with 20 from their field and offered to help, at a time when he was complaining about the establishment? Neocons or lib ints definitely would have had.

That's my point!! Realists, perhaps rightly, look down on those who play politics but that's the gateway to the administration. If you don't do that you won't punch your weight in influencing policy.

There is also your 2009 piece saying that even though Obama sounds like a realist in his Nobel speech he actually isn't . There's nothing wrong w/ that. My point is just that from the beginning you treated him as a traditional US FP president.

How exactly do you think political power works? Do you really think you write a piece and wait around for a president to call? No, you hustle and organize and out-compete others to gain the ear of the candidate. Realists did not play that game under Obama while liberals did.

A neocon would take a candidate that did not necessarily share their beliefs and get as close to them as possible. Realists see a candidate and use some differences as a reason to reject them, That's one reason I think for the disparity in influence.

It's hard to cite pieces when all your articles have a paywall but here goes. In 2012 you wrote a piece saying that Obama and Romney were very similar in foreign policy. . This was interesting b/c it was basically the opposite of what neocons do...

Well, the academic realists are taking a ton of money from the Kochs to organize themselves so I think they are figuring out a way. Whether it is a good or a bad thing is a different matter of course.

He said, no way. That guy is crazy. If you reject all those with your instincts-- Obama, Paul, etc-- is it any surprise you are on the outside? 4/4

But that's not how it works. You have to hustle and be proactive to advise a candidate or serve in an admin. Realists never organized politically. I remember I asked one very prominent realist scholar who was making a complaint about being ignored if he would help Rand Paul 3/4

Imagine what would have happened if Walt had invited Ben Rhodes up to Harvard, convened a group of realists, and offered to send young scholars to the admin to help Obama? Instead of doing this, they denounced Obama, left him to the establishment, and waited to be approached. 2/4

Part of the blame lies w/ the realists including . They rejected Obama as a liberal internationalist even though he was one of the most realist presidents. This was a major error. 1/4

It's no good at all! The US needs a strategist, not a legal theorist as national security advisor.

Good point but for Bolton it's part of his quest to prove his sovereignist worldview correct. He's a legal theorist, not a strategist, and knows very little about foreign policy outside of international law.
