One Catholic's experience with a traditionalist group in a local parish: "Worse, as this shadow church grows, the unity implied in the very word 'catholic' is jeopardized."

Gospel: On the way to Emmaus, the disciples are bereft after the Crucifixion. They utter some of the saddest words in the Bible: "We had hoped." They think their hopes are dashed, but God always has new things in store. As the Risen One shows them, nothing is impossible with God.

The Resurrection is at the heart of my faith. And I don't see it as a parable or a metaphor. Christ is, in a word, risen. A gentle (I hope) response to and my friend , president of Union Theological Seminary.

For me, the best summation of this is from Stanley Marrow, SJ's commentary on the Gospel of John (Paulist Press), where he links Jesus of Nazareth with the Risen Christ. I return to this passage often: 9/

But it was Jesus. In today's Gospel, Mary Magdalene recognizes Jesus's calling her name because she knew who it was *already*. The Risen Christ is identifiable with Jesus of Nazareth. "He is risen," they say. Not, "A new person is risen." He: Jesus. 8/

That is, the glorified body is something no one had encountered before or since. (NB: Lazarus was raised from the dead, but would later die.) So it's not surprising that they couldn't comprehend it. Likewise, decades later, the Gospel writers naturally struggle to describe it. 7/
