New AdMob features to help you monetize your app the smart way
March 2, 2015
Today, at the
Game Developers Conference
(GDC), we’re announcing three important updates to AdMob that will help developers build a smart monetization experience, and to help marketers reach the right users. We believe the best kind of in-app monetization experiences are the ones customized to individual app users, not a one-size-fits-all approach. Our vision for AdMob is to build a smart platform that makes such a tailored approach possible, or as we like to say, one that’s ‘audience aware’.
AdMob In-App Purchase House Ads
are a free, new format that can completely change how you think about your in-app purchase monetization strategy. You can use this format to create a customized ad to promote items to sell to your users, then AdMob’s audience-aware platform will predict those users who are likely to buy, and show them the ad. For all your other users - the ones unlikely to spend - AdMob can show them a regular ad. This approach means you can keep your high-value users engaged in your app, and for everyone else you’re making each impression count towards monetization. Currently in beta, this feature will be coming to all AdMob accounts in the next few weeks.
Audience Builder
is a powerful tool in AdMob that enables you to create lists of audiences based on how people use your app and then create customized experiences for users, ultimately growing your app revenue. For example, you could create an Audience List that defines those users who have not used your app in 14 days. Import that list into Google AdWords, and you can show ads to this list to re-engage users while they’re in other apps, or across the web. Audience Builder is available in all AdMob accounts now, and you can find out how to get started
here
.
AdMob Native Ads
are now in limited beta
on the AdMob platform. Participating developers will be able to show native ads in their app from Google advertisers, and customize them to match both the form and function of their app. We pay close attention to user experience, so our native ads are designed to be clearly identifiable as ads to users. We’re thrilled to be working closely with Atari to bring native ads to RollerCoaster Tycoon® 4 Mobile; check out the screenshot below with an app install ad for Zagat:
The user-friendly focus of native ads was an important consideration for Atari’s Chief Operating Officer, Todd Shallbetter: ‘Atari creates great game experiences for our broad audience. We're happy to be partnering with Google and be the first games company to take part in the native ads beta and help monetize games in a way that enhances our users' experience.'
We’re testing native ads on non-gaming apps, too, partnering with developers globally, including CocoPPa in Japan.
These new features in AdMob can provide you with many new ways to supercharge your monetization. You can find out more about them on the
AdMob website
.

Lowdown: How to Optimize Mediation for your App Part 1
February 14, 2015
Lowdown is a weekly series that brings you tips and tricks on how to best use AdMob to grow your app business, directly from members of the Google AdMob team.
A key goal for many app developers is to maximize revenue. If you monetize with multiple ad networks, you'll know that some have fluctuating CPMs and fill rates. AdMob mediation can help you determine the most valuable ad to serve in your app, and AdMob can help you determine which ads to serve.
Today, we’re going to dive deeper into how our mediation platform works and introduce an optimization strategy that may increase your app’s revenue–enabling a feature called
Live CPM
. The best way to understand this feature is to first understand how basic mediation works.
Mediation
AdMob is a robust mobile ads platform that includes mediation–allowing you to serve ad impressions from multiple 3rd party networks, your own house ads, and Google’s advertising inventory. With basic mediation, you’re required to rank all of the ad networks you use, assigning a predicted CPM for each one. When it’s time to serve an ad, the mediation platform will first make a request to the network you’ve ranked as number 1. If that network doesn’t serve an ad, it will make a request to your second-ranked network. It will continue down your list until an ad is served. Although helpful, this setup is unsophisticated. It doesn’t matter if network 2 or 3 is able to pay you a higher CPM, you’ve already committed yourself to the fixed ranking, and there’s a better way to increase revenue.
Mediation with Live CPM
In contrast, when the Live CPM feature is enabled, you increase your chances of higher CPMs with real time, dynamic competition. When it’s time to serve an ad in your app, Google’s advertising demand will provide its most valuable CPM, and compare this to the CPM you’ve assigned for your first-ranked network. Whichever network has a higher CPM will get the impression.
If your first-ranked network wins, but is unable to fill the impression, the process will repeat with the next-ranked network in your chain. This all happens in real time.
When enabling Live CPM, the initial results can be startling. Without it, you’re much more likely to miss your next network’s top tier demand. With it, your set-up is dynamic and top tier impressions from both AdMob and your other networks can be served. If you’d like to learn more, check out our
case study
on how Thapster, a smartphone music game app, succeeded with Live CPM and visit our
Help Center
to get more in-depth instructions on how to implement it.
In the next edition of Lowdown we’ll be looking at how you can further optimize Live CPM. Be sure to stay connected on all things AdMob by following our

Smarter monetization strategies - powered by AdMob’s new reporting tools
February 11, 2015
Wouldn’t it be great if you could slice and dice your app performance data and drill down to the most specific and actionable insight to help you monetize smarter? We’d like to to announce a new feature in AdMob to help you achieve that. In the Monetization section of AdMob, you can now directly apply multiple Dimensions and Filters in your
Performance Reports
and instantly generate customized reports to analyze, for example, the performance of specific apps and ad units in particular regions or countries.
By applying dimensions, you can sort or change the types of data shown.
Dimensions
determine the columns displayed in your report. You can add dimensions to two different performance reports: the AdMob Network report and Admob Mediation report. Below are some example dimensions:
AdMob Network report dimensions:
Date: View performance by date.
App: View performance by app.
Targeting type: View performance by targeting type.
AdMob Mediation report dimensions:
Date: View performance by date.
Ad source: View performance by ad source, which measures mediation traffic.
Allocation: View performance by allocation within ad slots.
By applying filters, you can hide specific data from your reports.
Filters
help you find the information you want within the larger report. Below are some example filters:
Ad unit
Country
Ad source
For instance, if you want to compare your new Android app’s banner and interstitial ads in Japan, simply select ‘Ad Unit’ as a Dimension, then add an ‘App’ Filter set as one of your Android apps, and a ‘Country’ Filter set as Japan. The graph and data will refresh immediately to represent this new segment!
Check out this new feature today and start refining your monetization strategy now. Refer to
Performance Reports help center article
for more details, and stay connected on all things AdMob following our

8 Things You Didn’t Know About AdMob
February 4, 2015
We’re constantly improving our platform and want to keep you in the loop. Here are 8 things you might not have known about AdMob.
1. AdMob is more than a banner only network.
AdMob taps into Google’s massive advertising inventory, which includes a variety of formats and also enables us to offer really high fill rates. Competitive CPMs combined with really high fill rates is a strong recipe for long term earning potential.
2. Implementing AdMob won’t slow down your Android app.
AdMob’s SDK is integrated into Google Play services–if you’re in the Play Store, you’ve already integrated the AdMob SDK. Further, there are several
simple ways to decrease Google Play services’ impact on APK size
.
3. There’s a clever way to make sure interstitial ads load instantly for users.
We allow, and highly recommend,
preloading of interstitial ads
right when a user logs in. It’s an
interstitials best practice
. If implemented right, there isn’t latency at all.
4. Google Analytics is integrated into AdMob and works for more than websites.
Google Mobile App Analytics has been entirely re-imagined for mobile development. We measure what matters most at all key stages: from first discovery and download to in-app purchases. Best yet, Google Analytics is now fully available in AdMob.
5. AdMob works across all major platforms.
AdMob works for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. Great examples of succesful cross-platform AdMob users include
Dictionary.com
and photo sharing app,
Picsart
.
6. You can update CPMs automatically with AdMob.
AdMob’s Network Optimization feature allows you to automatically update CPMs, helping you easily maximize revenue. This feature continually retrieves the freshest CPMs from each ad network based on historical performance and dynamically reorders them in your mediation stack. This ensures that the ad network with the highest CPM is served.
7. You can mediate on AdMob.
AdMob is a comprehensive mediation platform, supporting mediation of
dozens of the top networks
in the world.
8. House ad campaigns are free.
You can run as many house ads as you’d like for free. You can read more here about how Japanese game developer,
Colopl
, has been very successful using interstitial house ads to promote in-app purchases.

Google Analytics in AdMob helps mobile app developer Eltsoft go global
December 9, 2014
Cross-posted on the
Google Analytics blog
Since April 2014,
Google Analytics has been fully available in AdMob
, and now app developers are increasingly seeing results by combining data from both platforms. Here’s one story that illustrates the power of AdMob and Google Analytics together.
Passion for languages and learning
Jason Byrne, and business partner Robert Diem, are passionate about making a difference in education. They came together during their time as professors in Japan to found
Eltsoft LLC
, a company that builds mobile language learning apps for
iOS
and
Android
. Together, they started creating a series of fun tools that allow users to study whenever they want, wherever they are.
Global expansion
Their most popular app is
English Grammar
, which has been downloaded by more than a million people looking to sharpen their English-language skills in nearly 120 countries.
All of the company’s apps are available for free or as paid versions. To increase revenue, they chose AdMob to earn money from the free versions of their apps with advertising. “AdMob monetization is central to our success because it delivers high-quality, appropriate ads to our audience in their native languages, wherever they live,” says Jason.
The Google Analytics data within AdMob helped them understand more about their users. "Our app, English Grammar, has users from all around the world, so we turned to data from Google Analytics and AdMob to understand which languages we should consider for localization. For example, we knew we had to prioritize German and French, but we discovered other languages that we didn't expect, such as Russian and Japanese."
A data-driven approach to marketing
Eltsoft uses data to focus their marketing campaigns and assess where to use their resources most effectively. “Google Analytics keeps making campaign analysis simpler and clearer,” Jason says. “Data from various sources - Google Analytics and Google Play, for instance - are now all in one place. That helps me understand what’s happening with our ad campaigns.”
While data analysis helped Eltsoft validate some of their hypotheses, it also uncovered opportunities according to Jason: “The greatest takeaway for me is that the results are never really what I expect. I am often surprised. Analytics has given us great insights into who our users are, and has provided a very important lesson in the value of surveying our user base. Our simple assumptions are often inaccurate.”
Replicating successful strategies
Eltsoft has developed a way to calculate the value of users by using a combination of AdMob metrics (like ad request values) and Analytics metrics (like user counts and sessions per user). Having Google Analytics in AdMob has unlocked such analysis because the data is available in the same interface.
As a result, Eltsoft can now understand what works best for their users. “For example, we’ve made changes to our apps, and Analytics has really helped us to track the effectiveness of those changes. I would say six months ago, that our success was a mystery. The data said we were doing well, but the whys were not clear. Therefore, we couldn’t replicate or push forward. But today, we understand what’s happening and can project our future success. We have not only the data, but can control certain variables allowing us to understand that data.”
“Google Analytics data is literally a goldmine,” says Jason.
If you want to learn more about how Eltsoft is using Google Analytics and AdMob, download the
full case study

AdMob adds new partners to ad network optimization to help developers maximize revenue
November 17, 2014
When monetizing your mobile app, you have the option to show ads from multiple ad networks to maximize fill rates and increase earnings. AdMob Mediation provides a single place where you can manage many different networks. Over the last year we’ve been adding
new features
to the service to make it best in class, including
ad network optimization
that automatically gives you the highest CPM for each ad from all your networks.
Today we’re adding new partners to ad network optimization:
AdColony, AMoAd, Flurry, Millennial Media, and Vserv.mobi
join our existing ad network partners; Domob, InMobi, Jumptap, MDotM, MobFox, and Nend.
Ad network optimization is a smart way to boost your revenue; it looks at all the CPMs across the networks you’ve set up in AdMob Mediation and selects the highest paying one to show an ad from. It does this on a continual basis, so that you can get the best CPM available.
Set-up is easy; simply enter your ad network login credentials once and AdMob can pull accurate CPM data for each network.
1. In
ad network settings
, check the ‘Automatically pull the eCPM value from this ad network’ box.
2. Enter your login credentials so AdMob can collect the latest pricing data from your networks.

Announcing the Inside AdMob Blog—dedicated to mobile app success
October 8, 2014
The mobile app industry is booming. We spend
more than half our time
online each day using mobile apps. But according to Vision Mobile, over half of mobile app developers earn below the app “poverty line” of $500 per month (Developer Economics - State of the Nation Q3 2014).
Developers are diving into this new economy, creating thousands of new apps each day. But as a fairly new industry, it can be difficult to figure out how to make money once you’ve developed your app. At Google, we are developing tools and resources to make it easier for developers to monetize their apps.
As part of this effort, and to help you get more insight into the mobile app industry, we’re launching this new blog. The AdMob blog will focus on global app trends, customer successes, and how developers can capitalize on this growing business. Filled with tips and tricks about how to make the most of Google’s mobile advertising tools, the AdMob blog will help guide you and teach you how to earn revenue for your mobile apps.
