Germany extends naval ship patrols off Libya's coast

The German parliament on Thursday voted to mandate its military to take on additional roles in the EU-led mission Sophia, which is patrolling waters off Libya's coast. EU defence ministers in late June decided that the naval mission will also train Libyan coastguards and navy to fight illicit flow of weapons into Libya. German MPs endorsed the use of up to 950 German military personnel, whereas 400 are currently involved.
